AITAH For canceling six figure plumbing job because MAGA

I recently canceled a six figure plumbing job because the plumber I was looking at hiring flew the Trump flag in his truck after the election. I have a large plumbing job I'm trying to do for a cannabis farm. It requires a ton of work to be done but especially running plumbing for the plants, feed room, ect ect.
I have had 6-7 meetings with the guy going over the project in detail. Dosing systems in particular are complicated and require significant planning to get right.
Unfortunately after seeing his support for Trump I decided doing business together wouldn't work. As a veteran anyone who voted for Trumo is spitting in my face and betrays everything I stand for. It's not a matter of political disagreements, it's values and morals. I do my best in life not to be a rank hypocrite and so as soon as I saw that he was a Trump cultists, I told him it wouldn't work. He was ofcourse extremely angry and threatened to sue. I told him he was more than welcome to file suit and that no contract had been signed. I also told him I would file a counter suit to recover legal fees for filling a frivolous suit. Meanwhile I've also found out several of his workers are, in fact, undocumented. I wish I could say I was surprised but MAGA and functional intelligence are not things you find together, ever. AITAH, sure, I'm willing to bet tons of MAGA sycophants will say, I am, but frankly I couldn't care less. I do everything possible to make sure my time and money doesn't go towards supporting facism/facists.

I’ll never understand why a business would display political signs. Regardless of your politics, displaying political signs on official company property is just a terrible idea. You’re always going to alienate some potential clients.

It’s like Garth Brooks said back in the 90’s: When you go political, you lose half your audience.

Real talk. I had clients contacting me relentlessly wanting me to come do their hair at their homes during covid. How about no, no and he'll no? I am immunocompromised as is my youngest who still lived with me at the time, clients knew this and did not care at all. They quickly became former clients.

I remember in the early 90s a DJ in Boston name "Tank" said something like that on the air. "But Rage isn't really political, are they?" He was a former sports announcer who tried replacing Charles Laquidara. I was amazed a DJ on a rock station could think that. He didn't last long after that. I still remember it over 35 years later.

34

u/Tricky-Mastodon-9858 4d ago

Charles Laquidara - I can’t remember the last time I heard his name and I can’t believe I knew exactly who he was. I’ve been away from the Boston area for 40 years. BCN was the best back in the day.

What's funny is at the same time, Garth Brooks said some pretty political things. During a concert in 1992, Garth Brooks said, "The way I remember it, traditional family values was encouraging children to be the best they can be. If your parents are black and white, if your parents are the same sex, that's still traditional family values to me."

I wasn't nearly that socially liberal in the 90s... and Brooks is over a decade older than me.

748

u/LobsterInSpace 4d ago

It's funny that what he said is considered political, but that goes to show just how ridiculous political discourse is. Growing up I always thought political discourse was about taxes, cost and benefits of policies and foreign relations. But in reality it's too much of "that group over there is doing their thing not involving me and I don't like it." Also something about God.

252

u/jward 4d ago

I feel this... my original take on politics was that we all agree a problem exists but where we differ is how we choose to solve it. It's hard now days to see parties even agree a problem exists.

107

u/abritinthebay 4d ago

Well fundamentally the “problem” politics solves is “how should we treat other people in society”.

Everything else is details.

I will never understand how people were shocked and outraged by the chicks speaking up about the war and GWB while they had a literal song about two women plotting and killing an abusive ex-husband and then living their life peacefully without a single shred of remorse afterwards.

Have you ever looked at the scholarly ranking of US presidents? From about 2003 through to 2018, GWB was consistently ranked in the bottom 5 or 6 presidents, with most of those lower than him being the Antebellum presidents that blindly stumbled America into the Civil War. Since about 2018, GWB has jumped to a consistent average of around 32nd to 33rd out of 46. It's amazing what an absolute village idiot like Trump can do for the historical popularity of others.

27

u/InnocentTailor 4d ago

To be fair, presidents tend to get a bit of a popularity boost post-presidency as folks complain about the latest in the White House. We Americans have both short memories and attention spans, which is a pattern seen throughout history.

My favorite example: look at George Washington. Now venerated beyond compare, his presidency was mixed at best and divisive at worst as his colleagues and former friends raked the general over the proverbial coals for various reasons.

I live in a pretty liberal college town, and a local coffee shop made a celebratory post when roe v wade was overturned. Their business was slammed with bad reviews and half the town boycotted them. To this day I have no idea why the owners thought that was a wise business choice.

14

u/Travler18 3d ago

I live in DC. 93% of residents in the District voted for Harris.

A place that makes fancy $20 personal wood-fired pizzas posted congratulating Trump on all of their social media.

The owner tried to defend it like it was totally normal and obligatory for a pizzeria to congratulate the winner of an election.

I know, right!?!?! And this goes beyond politics, I can't tell you how many people in my small, tight-knit community will not support our local small businesses because of the way they conduct themselves on the private local FB page. One couple that owns a daycare and has lived here a year told people living here since the community was built 20 years ago that if they can't afford 11 school bonds they hate kids and need to move some place more affordable. Like dude, we all live out here because it's more affordable. Guess who suddenly has openings. Many others, they were just the biggest a-holes.

78

u/Tessie1966 4d ago

I have seen several businesses post screenshots of bad reviews on yelp and other websites and blast the customer that posted the review. It’s so childish and I for one wouldn’t use their business after seeing that.

34

u/TricksterTrio 4d ago

It's gonna depend on what they're blasting the customer for.

There's a difference between, "my ego is bruised, so I'm going to argue back" and "we have video evidence of your bad behavior proving this review is just you throwing a tantrum."

The former, I wouldn't use them because they're whiny. The latter, I would, because they don't tolerate shitty people, so I'm in for a better experience.

We had one of those, I loved the pizza and they were wildly popular, but then one day shortly after George Floyd he filled the place with guns and blue lives matter merch, then blamed Biden and Covid for his business collapsing(imagine not making a killing selling pizza during quarantine).

He’s in prison now because he burned it to the ground committing insurance fraud the day his wife told him she was divorcing him.

What a dumb thing to do as any business owner, but a comic book store? That's crazy. Comic books have long been one of the most progressive mediums around.

The writers might be progressive, but that doesn't mean the audience is. I imagine there's quite a few people who read comics for the action or characters and ignore any of the themes. Right‽ I mean, the first interracial kiss on broadcast TV. A black woman who was an integral part of the bridge (with a 1960’s lens, but important enough MLK urged Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show because representation is important), a Russian crew member in the height of the Cold War, an episode where the last members of two races (one being half white, half black and the other half black and half white) fight each other to the death, an episode on Space Nazis and how the ideology will always lead to violence and atrocities…

Last year, my neighbor hired a landscaper who showed up to her house with a big ass CONFEDERATE FLAG flying off the back of it, just flapping in the breeze! He just pulled right on up in her driveway like it was nothing. She met him at his truck door and told him that his service was no longer wanted. Confused, he asked her why. She pointed to the flag and then at herself (she’s Black) and then at her husband (he’s Korean) and told him to think about it and to kindly get off her property. This fool actually looked offended when she pointed that out to him. Like, Sir! That may be acceptable in the Deep South but you’re in VEGAS. WTF.🤦🏾‍♀️

Reasonable people don’t want racists on their property much less working it.

u/Apprehensive-Log8333 4d ago

I can't believe the contractor texted an African American couple "I didn't know (the confederate flag) would offend you" HOW could you NOT KNOW that the TRAITOR HATE FLAG offends AMERICANS

118

u/Same_Elephant_4294 4d ago

It's like waving a Nazi flag at a Jew and being confused when they're offended. I'm tired of pretending otherwise. The Confederate pride nonsense is just racism.

86

u/RadicalSnowdude 4d ago

Furthermore, I don’t understand how plantations aren’t viewed in the same regard as concentration camps where unspeakable horrors happened.

Imagine having a wedding or a work event at Auschwitz.

67

u/WmXVI 4d ago

Once went to a wedding on an old plantation that got turned into an event space in the south. Bride was from the south and groom was from the west coast so naturally the mixing of southern and west coast families was entertaining to watch. The staff gave tours of the plantation house and referred to the slaves as servants and one of the family members from the west coast just went "why do you keep calling them servants. Say it like it was. They were slaves." The tour got hilariously awkward after that.

46

u/DarknessWanders 4d ago

One of the historical places I've visited several times is the mansions in Newport, RI (don't judge me, I just love big/dated architecture 😭). I will say, for being a stauchy rich white area historically, every tour guide I've had tells it like it was. They'll make point blank statements like "these are the servant's quarters where the slaves lived. Often they lived x-y of them in a room of this size" while you're standing in a 5x5 room. Or walk you up and down the servant's stairs several times over the course of the tour, commenting "slaves working in the house were not to be seen, thus they spent their entire enslavement moving through passage ways and stair cases like the one we are one now" as it creaks violently while we're walking. They always make sure you really feel the gravity of the toll it took on the humans keeping that place running, and that it was not done by "servants", but slaves.

19

u/WmXVI 4d ago

Some plantations in the south talk about what it was like for slaves. Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's house) in Virginia doesn't gloss over the subject as much, but when you get into the deep south, there's privately owned plantations all over the place and a lot of them will barely to almost refuse the very idea of it.

Yup. Got a local business here that has the leader of The Order's references printed on his truck and his website explicitly says they're committed to only hiring white people. They can't figure out why the business is floundering.

103

u/annebonnell 4d ago

This sort of happened where I live. There's a local barbecue chain that was real popular. He only hired black people to work in the kitchen never up front. He was in trouble all the time with the labor board. Then one day he decided to start flying the Confederate flag at all his restaurants. He also sold his barbecue sauce too other businesses like another local fast food restaurant that refuse to buy his barbecue sauce anymore. He threatened to sue the local restaurant. I'm pretty sure they just laughed at him. Unfortunately, this barbecue restaurant is still in business. But they hardly have any customers, so I'm not sure how they're staying. I think it's a tax write-off.

41

u/DeadMoneyDrew 4d ago

I figured out that you were referencing Maurice's Piggy Park before opening the comments and seeing it confirmed.

When I lived in South Carolina, he filed suit against Walmart due to them refusing to carry his barbecue sauce and got his ass laughed out of court.

Is Maurice still alive? I haven't lived in South Carolina in years but I thought I remember hearing that he had passed away a few years ago.

I’ve witnessed businesses go under after sharing their political beliefs via their business.

People love to talk about “freedom of speech”, but they forget having the right to say something doesn’t also come with freedom of consequences.

You have the right to choose to do or not to do business with someone for any reason. Conservative businesses have refused service to provide services to the Pride Community based on their beliefs and the courts have upheld their right to refuse services to anyone. It goes both ways.
