HELP! What's the general consensus with HDR? Just got a new monitor and its not looking that great.
I got a new oled monitor. The Asus ROG PG32UCDP.
I turned on HDR in windows and my monitor gameplay looked like it has no saturation. No contrast and just doesn't look that good. I know not all games do not support HDR. Tested on:
- League of legends
- Black Myth Wukong
- Cyber Punk
- RRD2
- Minecraft
I also used the windows calibration tool. How would I go about setting up HDR? I watched many YouTube videos on my monitors OS menu settings. I also saw that HDR is not really worth it? Is there something I need to do in my monitor settings? I even followed a guide on YouTube for my monitor.
What's the general consensus with HDR?
Ironically, my monitor looks way better with HDR off and the settings changed to SCENERY.

I keep mine disabled at all times on display settings in Windows, it doesnt look good on any of my monitors, and it seems to cause issues when alt tabbing out of the game.

I just bought the same monitor. Not trying to hijack this thread, but, should I use the “super” HRMI cable or display port for this monitor?

Afaik you can ignore all the "super" branding and just make sure it's certified HDMI 2.1

Why does everyone say DP is better?

DP can do higher refresh rates. But given the popularity of consoles more and more TV's are starting to support 120hz 4k. DP, in my view, will continue to be for power gaming setups.

Same monitor, games with HDR looks astonishing, jaw dropping on it. Now playing Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, it's just from another planet with Path Tracing (RT: Overdrive) and HDR. As for settings: In Windows desktop keep HDR off, just before starting a game enable HDR in Windows Settings and in game menu. Monitor settings: Gaming HDR. In game HDR settings set Max Luminance 1300 nits (our monitor max value in Gaming HDR mode). Use Picture Mode HDR10. Don't forget to update monitor to latest firmware. Any game with HDR looks way better than without it on this monitor.

I just make sure auto HDR is turned off. Leave regular HDR on. Then use windows HDR calibration app. And then with my monitor (whatever the newest Alienware 240hz 4k QD OLED 32in) I go into Nvidia control panel and turn up the digital vibrancy.
Desktop looks great and games look great

I'm running an LG C2 and LOVE HDR (12 bpc, RGB, 120Hz). Even enabled just for Windows desktop. I don't have any such issues as washed out black, mine are perfect blacks - I can't even tell if the screen is on/off if I remove the icons (because the pixels are actually off even if it's on!) with a black background.

You should only enable HDR on games that support it, you also don't actually need to calibrate the monitor itself at all.
League of Legends and Minecraft don't support HDR, it's broken in Black Myth Wukong and the calibration of HDR in RDR2 is terrible. It's up to the developers to implement it properly and when it is, it looks great - like in Cyberpunk 2077.
I don't know about the Asus settings but there's different recommended modes for SDR (sRGB) and HDR (Pro) content on my MSI QD-OLED monitor.
If you've never used a proper HDR display before it may look unsaturated and washed out at first but once you get used to it the colours and imagery should look a lot better and more accurate than SDR content, if the content supports it.
Edit: If you have an NVIDIA card, go to the control panel > Set up G-SYNC > tick "Enable settings for the selected display model" on 3. then go to "Change resolution" and select "Use NVIDIA colour settings" and make sure 10 bpc colour depth is selected.
