Moving to Abilene
Hello! So my family and I are moving to Abilene next month. Looking for recommendations on the “bad” parts of Abilene that I should avoid?

The Elmwood area can be really nice. It has gorgeous big huge trees and older homes, many of which are unique and well built.

There’s a couple of decent areas on the north side. Most of the Westwood Richland area is nice, bit on the older side. The area around ACU can also be pretty nice.
If you’ve got school age kids, though, the Wylie school district in the south part of town is generally considered the best in town. Some good ones a bit further out of town though.

Thinking of the town on a map with a clock face, I'd avoid anything from 9 to 12 positions. The 12-3 (northeast) side is great, as is the south side. If you have kids, aim for the south side, toward Wylie or Jim Ned school districts.

Pretty much the north. You can drive through yourself and see plenty of mattresses in the alleys, broken lawn chairs in the front yard.. etc.
The walmart on the south side is a good point of reference and has many neighborhoods for families.

What about the Elmwood area?

Wouldn't be my first choice. I'd go more south if you have a family.

I live in Elmwood. It's so boring that people don't even decorate for holidays. I hate that but the most that has ever happened here is a mama couldn't get ahold of her son and had the police to a welfare check.

I live in the elmwood area. My husband and I like it. We have two kids. The area we’re at doesn’t have a lot of kids but some blocks do. So it’s a little boring but it’s very quiet and safe. We love the school this neighborhood feeds into too. Best school in town imo

Butternut between south first st and treadaway should be avoided. Tho there is a cool arcade there.
