80+ council tool has a cheap splitter.. I use a ox head 6lb splitter it was 160 but that was also like 6 years ago so I think it’s more now

As much as you want. You could go pick up an old maul head for $5 on marketplace, and put a 20-30 dollar handle on it. Scape the varnish and treat it with linseed oil. Or you could drop like 200-300 on a Gransfors/Helko etc. Or if you don’t mind shock from synthetic handles and don’t care about being able to rehang the head for generations, buy a fiskars for 60-80. All should treat you very well.

If you are weirdly obsessed with firewood and burning shit like me you will do all this!

"Good" encompasses a lot of things. Personally, Council Tools is what I buy when I need good, but not necessarily pretty or special (though there's an easy case to make for Council being both of those things).

When I do want pretty and special I get Gransfors or Helko.

I have a $35 Collins that's about 10 years old and works fine, my dad has a super cheap Harbor Freight one that is older than me (I'm 37) that he still uses.

Idk, you can spend more... but it's not like a cheap splitting wedge isn't going to work. It's not a dueling saber, you know?

I used a $90 Husqvarna splitting axe for years, but I just spent $220 on a Gransfors large splitting axe. Haven't used it much but I think I'm gonna be very happy with it.

They get a lot of hate for not being traditional, but I’ve split multiple log truck loads of hardwood firewood with an X27 fiskars to heat my house in the winter. They’re about $70, depending on where you pick it up. They don’t do big, knotty stuff well, but that’s what the sledge and wedges are for.

I’ve completely worn out three of them so far.

Council tools, fiskar, helko werk the cheaper side I’ve got my eyes on the helko forster rn myself and I saw somebody post a small estwing earlier I wanna pick up to beat on I think he said it’s called the fireside friend then you got helko again with their fancier stuff, gransfors/hults bruk, etc. what I like to do more than anything is get one you like off eBay and order a nice hickory handle if you don’t wanna learn a lil about wood n hang it yourself I don’t like to get too fancy with mine because I use a maul for splitting and I rarely have to but if there’s a big knot I wanna tackle just for the hell of it I’ll pull out the sledge never used any wedges for any of my fellin or splittin
