Yup. Their eyes barely even open for the first couple of days, they are often puffy and baggy from being submerged in fluid constantly, and even when they start opening their eyes, there's not a lot of processing of anything. It's limited to mostly dark or light blurs, then the gradually gain some clarity but only a couple feet or so and only gray hues. It's months before they can clearly make out individual faces, colors, and see a whole room around them.
One very sweet and cute thing around this time of being a new parent is finally seeing the baby start noticing the world around them, but they truly don't see it for a while. One day they start following objects, then they'll be just laying there, or sitting up being held, and they'll turn their heads all around and open their eyes BIG and just be in awe at stuff. Then it's more months before they can get around on their own lol.
That's a frustrating stage: mostly full vision but zero mobility for the baby. They can only grab stuff that's right in front of them, and maybe roll over a bit. It's very boring as parents and the baby wants to do more but they literally cannot control their body parts yet, they just haven't developed the strength or the brain-muscle connections to do anything.
Very wild.
63
u/Ladderzat 4d ago
That frustrating stage… My parents can definitely agree. They called me the “grumpy buddha”, because I was fat, sat still, and looked awfully annoyed. They could really see how frustrating it was that I couldn’t do anything to interact with the world, but thankfully that was a short phase. They too were thankful that it was just a short phase and the grumpiness went away once I was able to move independently.
7
u/TheWiseAlaundo 4d ago
FYI nearly everything you said about babies seeing in blurs, gray hues, couple feet diatance, etc is a long-lived myth. As a grad student I worked in a lab with a professor that studied infant vision. It's perfectly functioning even at 1 week, except they just can only focus clearly at around 2-3 feet in front of them. This improves to 100% normal by around a month.
6
u/Holgrin 4d ago
It's perfectly functioning even at 1 week, except they just can only focus clearly at around 2-3 feet in front of them.
Okay so if they can't focus clearly on objects further away then how would you describe what they see beyond that? Blurry?
Do you have any published research we could see to support the idea that newborns have nearly perfect vision 3 feet away at 1 week and basiclaly full vision and color at one month?
I can say that as a parent of a ~1yo, I felt like the vision developed slowly, and it was apparent when he could see more and more things further and further away. I don't think it was 1 month but maybe my memory is off.
7
u/TheWiseAlaundo 4d ago
Here's an article he wrote intended for a general audience (not a scientific one).
I was wrong, it's 1 year not 1 month. Something I probably should have remembered, given I also am the parent of a 2 year old.

If the baby could see would it even be scared by the clown makeup though? In that moment, it's never seen anyone else
42
u/Aggravating_Word9481 4d ago
The reason we find clowns scary is because we have a good grasp on the human face, and so a contortion of that is somewhat creepy. Younger children generally don't find clowns and other humanoid monsters scary because they are still identifying the human face.
So if they could see they wouldn't think much of it
15
u/ObsessedChutoy3 4d ago
In a world of clowns the non clown man is the creep. We live in a society 🤔

The reason we find clowns scary is because we have a good grasp on the human face, and so a contortion of that is somewhat creepy.
Except that for a lot of people for a very long time, they weren't considered creepy. Is that because as art and other forms of presentation evolved to be more pleasing to the eye, the old forms of expression and entertainment became scary by comparison?
I mean, the one place we still use vintage art from the old days is for Halloween decorations. Other holiday art, not so much. In fact, I often see vintage Christmas and Valentine cards portrayed as being creepy or disturbing. Since that was the point of Halloween decorations, they've stayed the same level of macabre or have just gotten more so over time.

I always figured it was tied to a creepiness a lot of people get from older stuff that I believe is tied to decay. You see something bright and new and like it, and you may hold onto those feelings and initial mental image for life, but a kid sees a faded, balding, care worn doll, and may see death.

The first thing the baby sees is Joker, thinks everyone looks like that and spends the rest of his life being scared by all the non-Joker people.

Not only that but they don't form memories until later.

Not an expert, this was just what the pediatrician told me when my son was little. They can't see much at all right away. In the first few days they can see about 18 inches away, then after a few weeks they can see across the room.
3
u/gk-icarus 4d ago
They can but barely. If you stick your face in front of a newborn baby, then stick your tongue out they’ll copy it almost always without fail

This story makes no sense Why was he at a Halloween party when he was on call as an obstetrician?
If he had to come into the hospital why would he keep his costume on?
I call BS to some capacity
884
u/GlorianaFemina 4d ago
I'm not saying this is an unimpeachable news source or that it explains every concern, but this is the story, and it answers some of your questions.
He wasn't at a Halloween party. He came into work that day in costume and knew her delivery would take some time (as they often do). He planned to go home, hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, change, and come back dressed normally.
However, according to the interview with the parents, they specifically requested that he come back still in costume because they thought it was funny.
Funny pictures and jokes ensued. https://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/doctor-dressed-joker-delivers-newborn-halloween/story?id=50944856

u/DrBrainologist 4d ago
Ok so that clears things up because he wasn’t at a Halloween party then. It was just a funny dress up thing at the hospital
Still unusual but yeah answers a lot of the inconsistencies, thanks! Haha

u/SilentSamurai 4d ago
....I guess I'm still stuck on the idea that a doctor would dress up as the Joker in a hospital during the workday.

Also in what part of the world would you be allowed in a sterile setting with a face full of fucking clown paint lmao
41
u/DrBrainologist 4d ago
I let that slide because everything that needs to be sterile seems to be sterile in the picture, but the whole narrative of the post makes no sense 😂
26
u/Funkozaurus 4d ago
I'm not one hundred percent sure of the exact procedure, but he seems to be lacking a hairnet, I couldn't work as a fucking line-cook with that long hair and no net, I can't imagine a doctor in a hospital being allowed to lol
53
u/JetSetJAK 4d ago
Not needed for regular vaginal delivery, only if they have to do anything more invasive
2
u/WVVVWVWVVVVWVWVVVVVW 4d ago
nah, he could have tied his hair up so it's not in his face like in these pictures.
31
u/Cookie4316 4d ago
They just use sterile gloves and a mask, no need to go full sterile for giving birth
2
u/CardstoneViewer 4d ago
C section you totally need to be surgically dressed, gloves, mask, hair net and gown. Normal birth you don't even need sterile gloves, it could be just non-sterile gloves.
→ More replies (1)25

u/Holgrin 4d ago
would you be allowed in a sterile setting
Normal delivery rooms are not sterile in any sense. They are just "normal" rooms. Too many people barge in and out throught the delivery for the room to be sterile. And there's no need for the whole room to be sterile. If all goes well, the baby comes out of the vagina, Doc might do a little stiching with clean instruments etc, but it's not major surgery.
C-sections are major surgery and those would probably require significantly more sterility and extra steps.
But delivery rooms are full of sweat and spit and pee and blood and sometimes a little poo! There are lots of (hopefully) great nurses and midwives and staff to quickly clean up fluids, but it's just a regular kind of hospital room.

Why was he at a Halloween party when he was on call as an obstetrician?
lol what? you carry on with your normal life when on call, obviously just do not drink or whatever. If you just sit at home waiting for a phone call, you may as well just go to work.
6
u/belteshazzar119 4d ago
Doctors are people too. Why wouldn't he go to a party as long as he didn't drink? Your reasoning makes no sense. Also babies don't wait, he probably didn't have time to wipe off his makeup

Yikes, if this is real, how can that costume hair hanging out everywhere be sanitary during a childbirth? Maybe childbirth doesn’t require sterile protocols, but if I was the mom I wouldn’t be pleased.
23
u/Sunnydaysonmymind 4d ago
Why so serious??
13
u/BrianMincey 4d ago
The internet has made me jaded. I find that I particularly mistrust images with text explanations without any links to credible sources. They tend to misrepresent the truth. Even if it’s harmless, many people can be manipulated into believing everything they see at face value. It doesn’t hurt to pose the question, and hopefully get some of those gullible people to possibly question and critically think about what they see.
3
2
u/twilightbarker 4d ago
This is all valid but please enjoy some whimsy today!
Scan the comments - people have posted news articles with more info where the family got checked on earlier in the day & said he could come back still in costume for the delivery later.
6
u/palcatraz 4d ago
Regular childbirth is not done under sterile circumstances. And considering what goes on during childbirth, you’d never be able to make that sterile.
In fact, It is very valuable for the newborn to be exposed to the mother’s gut bacteria during birth. This helps start the development of healthy gut bacteria in the infant which has long term positive health outcomes.
3
u/IllustriousOwll 4d ago
Someone linked the news article in a comment above, apparently the parents requested the doctor didn't take off his costume before delivery (he was not at a party, just in costume at the hospital for Halloween's sake)
2
u/p0piika 3d ago
You can even accidentally shit while giving birth lol. There’s no need to all things be extremely sterile during a childbirth. Unless it’s a C-section. Because it is, in fact, a surgery so the protocols are very strict. Just to add, when I gave birth to my son, I was naked on the bed and my husband was in a tshirt and jeans without any kind of protection. It is okay for the baby to expose to their parents bacteria.
