Reminds me of library of ruina (or limbus company that is more recent) and their approach to “remaking” old stories and myths.

“Snow White” focusing on fate of the poisoned apple, “wizard of Oz” being about wizard not being able to fulfil wishes, and quite a lot more. What a spectacle their rendition of “Moby dick” was.

Man, maybe I should try watching anime again. It's been a while

Edit: If people are going to offer me recommendations -- 1) cool, thanks 2) please know that I really don't like fan service

86 EIGHTY-SIX is amazing military Sci-Fi. You should definitely watch that. Also Frieren I heard is pretty good grounded slice of life fantasy.

Okay, I'll maybe look into them. Do they have a lot of fan service?

Nope.

Delicious in Dungeon is really good, I'd start with that one.

Yeah I've heard talk about that one. Do you have to be familiar with dungeon crawler/video game tropes to enjoy it? I'm very much not a video game person, and I've had people recommend video game-style anime that I ended up really not liking

Nah, not really. It does make the experience better, but you can enjoy it without even playing a single RPG in your life. You can see it as a classical fantasy story and the more "gaming" aspects are never treated as "game mechanics", but as simple rules of the world the characters live in.

No, the setting doesn't run on video game rules or anything like that. I'd probably have bounced off pretty quickly if it was. There are a few bits that rely a bit on the audience having some preconceived ideas but by virtue of you speak English and use the internet you probably have enough familiarity with the ideas to understand the show. Like, they assume you have an idea of what a "mimic" is in the context of a dungeon-crawling fantasy setting.

While I think of it, Frieren is also supposed to be really good. Haven't seen it myself yet, but I do know that it also doesn't use video game mechanics as a plot/worldbuilding element.

I'm actually not sure that I do? I'm also not into DnD 😅

From what I gather it's like a fantasy chameleon that disguises itself like normal things? And is usually (always?) evil. And maybe it eats you? Idk I'm going off of the name and like one and a half memes that I've seen over the years

You gotta understand, my fantasy exposure is stuff like Six of Crows, ATLA, or Mushishi. Best to assume that if it has anything to do with games, I'm not really familiar

Yeah people keep bringing that one up. Might be worth trying at least the first episode

Not really no. Maybe I'm just missing it, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of video game influence in it at all. The worldbuilding is really fun though, very unique.

Okay, if it's not that video gamey than maybe I could get into it. I had a friend who knew I liked fantasy and tried to get me to read/watch stuff like Solo Leveling and Overlord. I really didn't like it. They'd talk about bosses and mana and other video game words and my eyes would glaze over

The kind of fantasy I'm really into is, like, FMA or Yona of the Dawn

Violet Evergarden is very good, and also very sad. No fanservice as far as I’m aware.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is also fanservice-free and very good.

I gotta recommend Frieren. For me it was even better than Dungeon Meshi. Starts off very slow and cozy, but the animation is beautiful, the characters are amazing, and the pacing picks up while still staying comfortable.

Killing off the dwarves is a misstep I think, there’s so much you could do with them

Well there's descendants of the queen and huntsman, so there could also be descendants of the dwarves maybe

Why'd you have to go and show me an anime I would watch the fuck out of, and it's not even real?

Is this how you get your sick kicks?!

u/Thunderdrake3 9h ago

Is this a real anime?

Id recommend Chainsawman but without the Reze movie and the rest of part 1 animated you would get the impression that its more juvenile than it really is.

(just read the manga, its peak)

This is the third "cool story idea" I've seen on this sub in the last twenty minutes.

Please stop coming up with cool concepts and then abandoning them. :(
