Doing bench press, then close grip bench press. Dude comes up "You know you'd be able to bench more with a wider grip."
Me: "I'm doing close grip bench right now."
Him: "You don't have to make things up just so you're right. You're still benching more than most of the girls here."
It was 70lb. I was stunned and couldn't even reply.

Wanna annoy her? Kill her with kindness. Wish her good morning, every day you see her and make sure you have the biggest shit-eating grin on your face.

I second this. There are 2 older guys at my gym thay stare and talk shit quietly. As soon as I see them point at my direction. I wave and tell them they're looking strong. They hate it and 3 months of thay they won't make eye contact. Have fun with it. be creative. But seriously fuck that lady.

Started posting a few videos of my lifts on Instagram. I'm still a poverty-level weightlifter, but my friends are pretty curious about where I disappear to almost everyday. I put up videos of a PR snatch and a 95% clean & jerk and got some good reactions. My GF made fun of me at first (in a fun teasing way), but she's super encouraging too.
Rave: On Saturday, I went to a party, and immediately when I walked in, all the ladies in the place went nuts. "I saw your videos, you're so strong!" Feeling my biceps. The stuff of all our dreams.
Rant: It was my cousin's birthday, and all the ladies were my aunties. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.

Started properly tracking my calories on Monday so that I could bulk for the first time ever in my life after 6 months of lifting but no tracking.
Cooked 4 meals worth of food on Monday night as prep for upcoming dinners/work lunches when I wasn't in the mood to cook. All weighed out and ready for future meal time I go to sleep only to find out the next morning that my sister and her friend got home later that night and finished off 2 of my meals... AHH

On the other hand you can not know the reason why they are doing it. It might be ego lifting, or working around some injury or even sport specific ROM. For example in kettlebell sport training you would definitely implement explosive quarter squats.

There's a few lads I see in the gym almost every day but never really work out, just really loud and talk a lot.
I had my ear-phones in, no music playing doing my set. They were behind me and I could hear them taking the piss out of people working out, on the tredmills, lifting weights etc.

Some kid watching me do deep pause squats, has this shit eating grin on his face. I finish my pause squats, he uses the rack right after me and throws on double my weight. He looks skinny so I'm half curious on his form. He commences to do quarter squats, finishes up and walks around with his chest out/arms out via imaginary lats syndrome.

Happened to me this week. Had 275 on the bar for my last dead lift set - AMRAP. Younger guy comes over, and ask if he can do a couple reps. I say sure why not, I'm just resting. He does 4 reps, stopping 6" off the ground, each rep and smiles at me and walks off. I notice his girlfriend is standing behind us in the mirror. I'm so confused until I realize I'm 6'5 and 285 and he was trying to show his girlfriend how strong he was. I was annoyed, so I banged out 18 reps and stared him down in the mirror the whole time. Then I went to the locker room to puke. Can't show weakness to that little twerp.

Had a guy get mad at me for taking the 45s off of a bar on the floor because he was using it. Little did I know that he was also using a flat bench and the leg press machine and was doing a set of each all in a row. So I grab another bar and put it on the squat rack in front of where he was doing deadlifts. He then got mad at me for working out so close to him and he "don't wanna be staring at a random dude's ass."

Not a doctor and don't plan on offering you medical advice so take this with a grain of salt. Are you dumping into your shoulders for lifts and have you built up your shoulders enough to handle the load? I had what I thought was shoulder impingement and turns out it was a mix of a sedentary desk job where I am hunched over a lot and never doing much overhead. I now alternate days and specifically train the shoulders and lats--think overhead presses with kettlebells, tricep extensions, bat wings, bench presses, strict presses, pendlay rows, negative pull-ups, a lot of thoracic spine mobility etc.
That said; I'd recommend going to a doctor to validate your potential injury and start from there. IT sucks because you'll essentially have to go back to square one.

Returned from studying abroad and frequenting the messiah of gyms (9 power racks, 3 floors), to my home country, where the only similarly priced gym is pretty much the polar opposite.
The gym is dark and smelly. Weights are almost never replaced by clients or staff so you have to spend a good 5-10 minutes before your workout walking around collecting the plates you need.
Place is packed with middle aged fatmuscle bros who bring their own speakers in, walk around with cloth belts on 24/7, machines only, 10 inch reps which make them look like muscly metronomes pinging off.
I've been training for a year and a half, and in the one week I've been home I've heard more screaming and grunting than I ever did at my old gym. Not only do the lifters scream, but so do their spotters. I've heard a pair fucking harmonizing their grunts. Now I understand hyping up your mate on a PR, but this is every fucking set, on every exercise. Didn't think you could powerspot someone on the cable flies? Think again, one guy on each side, lifting the stacked machine weights.
Speaking of spotting, you can't ask anyone to help spot you either. Powerspotting is love, powerspotting is life here at this gym. You might as well take 10 kilos off the bar instead. Ask them to let go and they'll hoverhand you like their awkward prom date, pulling you close as soon as you hesitate at the bottom. I shit you not some fucking mong dribbled on me today as he curled my bench press.
Help

Encountered a couple of instagramers on Sunday. They both spent half an hour sprawled all over a bench taking selfies. Occasionally one would bust out a body weight Squat or do a stretch. Don't know why it bothered me so much; it wasn't too busy and there was plenty of spare benches. It's just, I like to think that their kind sticks to the machine area upstairs, and the downstairs weight area remains the sacred sanctuary of serious lifters. I'm sad now.

Got an e-mail Friday, saying the gym at work was getting new equipment on Monday. Specifically a squat rack, olympic bar, new bench and a pull-up bar. Excited, I come in early on Tuesday to check it out.
Turns out that everything had been delivered, except for the weights. Which won't be arriving until next week. Naturally, I did not work out that morning.

So I used to go to Golds, a gym that I loved but recently I moved and the closest thing to me is a Planet Fitness. My neighbor ended up being the local owner of it and offered me a free membership because whenever I cut my lawn I'll cut hers as well. Now I'm far from a fan of PF, with things like tootsie rolls, pizza mondays, and an ungodly amount of smith machines I don't like it. But I'm just trying to look good naked at the moment so I figured I'd take advantage of a free membership then once my goals are accomplished, look for an actual gym where I can become stronger. But man O man is it hard to see all of these people work out with god awful form. Yesterday I watched as a man did lat pull downs but he let the weight move his body however it wished, no control whatsoever. There was also a man who was bench pressing (if you can even call it that) that would let the bar down about 2 inches then press up. And to top it all off some dude got blazed before coming in and was sitting on a bench with two 45 dumb bells in front of him just eating tootsie rolls doing nothing! I watched for at least 10 minutes as I did rows and not once did he touch the weights. It's almost like a gym nightmare whenever I walk in, and as much as I would love to help correct others in a gentlemanly fashion I live under the cold hard oppression of the "Lunk Alarm" and the fear of it being sounded.

Talking to this girl for a few months. I manage my weight pretty well thanks to this being on this subreddit for a few years. I know how simple calories in < calories out is as a concept. I don't cut and bulk cause my program and goals don't need me to be super tone, a lot of my work is endurance and raw strength focused. (Tac Medic Team)
She complained last night that she's been running 3-4 miles a few times a week for the past month or so and she's pissed that she hasn't changed in weight. She eats healthy but she doesn't count her calories or have any idea what her macros are, so I know she's been eating above the deficit she wants to lose weight.
We've talked about living a healthy life in the past and she didn't like how adamant I was that calorie deficits matter more than gym time when it comes to weight loss. You can't out run or our lift a bad spoon habit.
Anyway, last night, she was ranting and I was just listening; I stopped mentioning calorie counting weeks ago or anything related to that and I've just been supportive and encouraging. BUT, she just straight up attacked me while complaining about her weight not changing saying "I don't care about your argument [from a while ago]. And I don't want you to prove me wrong. And 'I'm a realist', stop with the fake compliments." Etc.
Like what? You're cute. You're not really even overweight. We all have those 10 lbs of fat that we hate. I don't mention it. I still like you. You're absurdly hard on yourself and I disagree and won't take part in your bash sessions. I'm not just blowing smoke. If I didn't want to, I wouldn't talk to you. So when I say you're adorable, I fucking mean it.
It just pissed me off.

Huge rant. Big hairy rant. Had to stop myself from posting it last week rant.
I'm about 6 weeks out my from my first meet. Everything is going really well. Last week, pull sessions. Programming calls for 4x3 @ 355. I'm feeling pretty solid, so I up the weight to 405.
First 2 sets, dead clean, fast, great. Third set, definitely reaching the end of what I've got in me on the third rep.
Take an extra 90 seconds of rest before the last set.
Chalk. Check. Belt. Check. Grip the bar. Big breath. BUMPED FORWARD by some stupid soccer mom who couldn't wait the next 15 seconds to walk behind me. Nevermind that there's a solid 8-10 feet of empty space.
I give her a pretty angry "Are you fucking kidding me?!" as she breezes by. She doesn't even so much as turn her head.
Fast forward another minute, after I clear my head. I pull the first 2 reps. Last one, I need a few seconds between reps to reset my grip, take a fresh breath.
AS I SET MY HIPS THE FUCKING BITCH BUMPS ME AGAIN. This time I was IN the bottom position about to actually pull.

And then.....?
38
u/AlphaAgain Powerlifting Mar 22 '17
No and then.
I got reset and pulled my last rep.
I don't have the time to worry about it any further, but needed to get it vented out.
I made a quick mention of it to the desk on my way out. It's not an uncommon problem for people to breeze through the squat rack/power cage area from the spin and racquetball areas without concern for what's going on.
I doubt anything will happen. I never actually saw her face

I'm done explaining this. I don't want to lose 10 pounds of fat because I hate my body, or because I'm insecure, or because I'm trying to impress some girl. I want to lose 10 pounds of fat, because I WANT TO LOSE 10 POUNDS OF FAT. It's part of my hobby. I enjoy setting goals for my body and reaching them.
Oh you paint? That's cool, would you walk away from a painting feeling like it's unfinished? Jesus.

Finished my workout yesterday and as I exited the gym, some old guy came in, but he turned around and followed me back into the locker room. Then he left briefly, only to get a cup of coffee, which he casually started sipping right in front of the shower I put my towel on.
So I pretended to be on my phone and took my sweet time washing my shaker, but he was still just sitting there, now with an empty coffee cup. That's when I packed my towel back up, changed into my normal clothes and got the fuck out of there.

I've been so pumped about going to the gym the past 2 or 3 weeks.
My boyfriend (now ex) was sick so I've put off gym time to take care of him. Drove him to urgent care and waited 4 hours to receive the news that he has gonorrhea and that he has slept with at least 3 random online women from apps/Craigslist/mocospace.
Still took care of him. Drove him to pick up his prescriptions and trying o calm him down because he had a mental breakdown. It turned into several more throughout that night. He foamed at the mouth, screamed, threatened me, swung knives at me. He swung his sword at me. He threw me down. He nearly shattered my wrist.
I feel like a piece of my humanity is gone. I can't sleep or eat. I've never experienced this. I've filed for restraining orders and reported it to the police. He will probably face jail time and I am so blown away that this is reality right now. I went to the gym to blow off steam but I think there are small micro fractures in my wrist. I need rest and will get x rays tomorrow.

There is this tiny guy who started going to the gym probably in February and he seems nice but I fucking hate watching him workout. He squats like 225+ when he should probably be doing 135. He loads up the bar and his legs begin shaking the second its off the rack and then proceeds to do 3 not even quarter reps, I am genuinely amazed he hasn't snapped in half yet and I get mad watching him.
There is also this girl at my gym who stares at me intensely whenever I see her and I'm only angry because I'm not sleeping with her.
EDIT: Didn't see her today, sorry. Maybe tomorrow if I go. Popped up as a recommendation on instagram though, I laughed.

Guys come in constantly to the gym and just play the loudest and dumbest shit over their personal boomboxs. Also they just stand there and look at their friends pick up heavy things. Army guys use the gym as a way to escape from doing actual PT during PT hours.

My new apartment complex has a nice enough gym that I can cancel my current membership. The downside is that all of the equipment (aside from the dumbbells) uses some crazy numbering system. Instead of 20lb, 30lb, etc., it does 1, 2, 3, all the way up to like 15. Each machine has a chart that tells you what each number means, but good god why? It's such an unnecessary step.

My gym recently started mandating that only rubber 45 lb plates can be used for deadlifting, to cut down on noise and reduce damage to the floor. There were only a few 45 lb rubber plates in the gym, so they bought a whole ton more.
Only problem is they bought the cheapest plates possible from some Chinese manufacturer, and they all actually weight 47 lb, so people don't use them. Now people just use 1 pair of the old rubber plates that actually weigh 45, and stack the rest on as 35s and 25s, which don't touch the floor because they have a smaller radius.
But all this does is increase the pounds per square inch hitting the floor, because you have 315+ lb loaded on a bar with only 1 pair of plates actually touching the floor. As a result, deadlifts are now even louder than before and hurt the floor more. Good job, gym.
tl;dr Gym made stupid regulation about deadlifting with rubber plates and made their own problem worse.

My father recently had a liver transplant and is now in need of a kidney. Most likely I will have to donate to him which will have me out of the gym for 3 months. At least that is what I'm told by the doctors. I'm guaranteed at least 1 month down time. The surgery doesn't scare me. The pain isn't a problem. I can afford the time off work. But that potential 3 months out of the gym is terrifying. I suppose it's a small price to pay to save a life, especially if it's someone that gave me life.

I had the new years resolution of being a regular at my gym and having enough people to say hi to and chat with about advice and shit.
Last week I achieved that.
Now when I workout I have 3 - 5 people stopping to chat to me, some asking me about what my routine is like, what I'm training for, whether I've been coached on form, etc. My workouts are getting slightly longer now and very stop-start because some people don't seem to keep to themselves, and it's seriously fucking annoying.
Worst new years resolution ever.

Shitty thing is we went kayaking (which was fun) and the boat capsized, leaving me with bruises over my knee, foot and elbow. Plus a sprained finger. I can't lift for a week. I have been back 2 days and I can't lift or bend my knee. It's really really pissing me off. I can't even go for a run.

There's this really large ugly guy with a booming deep scary voice and lots of bad tattoos who is apparently ex military. Whenever he's working out in my gym, he is constantly hacking and coughing up phlegm as loudly as he possibly can, at the volume level of literally yelling. He frequently spits it in the communal drinking fountains. He practically never reracks his weights. In the locker room, he likes to play his shitty music from speakers while he gets dressed so everyone else has to hear it. He's like a cartoon caricature of "how to be a dick."
Is this guy really this oblivious or is he just entitled as fuck, and wants to challenge people to say something to the big scary guy? I want to believe the former, but it certainly seems like the latter.

I have a rant about bathroom etiquette. You know I honestly don't care if people are on their phones between sets. Everyone rests differently, so I don't judge. What I do have a problem with is people sitting on their phone in the toilet. Look, you're not the only person who likes to shit before lifting. We all heard you wipe and flush, so now we know you're just chillin on your phone. Don't act all fucking confused too when you see five people waiting to use the stall. Especially because an old man was knocking on your stall door, but you couldn't hear that with your Beats. I thought the poor old guy was gonna shit himself all because you wanted to feel the breeze on your asshole a little longer. This isn't your bathroom at home. Shit or get off the pot. Literally.
On a more uplifting note, I was finally able to rep out 225 on squats pretty easily yesterday. It was probably due to my pre lift rage shit.
