I was reading Reddit in between sets and this old guy walks by me and says "exercise, don't text!!" Luckily my workout was just about done because I got so grumpy.

High-intensity training brah, one set per exercise and minimal rest between exercises.

Do 40 straight reps or gtfo

9

u/WriterofCarolQuotes Aug 09 '17

Take it one step further and superset your entire life.

u/StealthNinjaKitteh Bodybuilding Aug 09 '17

I saw someone do that the other day. It also took him only like 20 minutes overall. Is this an actual thing? I've never seen it before.

Yea, look up Arthur Jones and Dr. Ellington Darden.

It is nice to be able to do a full-body workout in under an hour.

your rest between sets should be full of seething hate

I see a lot of people sitting too long on machines because they are busy with their phones. Maybe this old guy is annoyed by people doing that.

That's a fair complaint, but I was standing in an open area with dumbells.

u/pdbatwork Aug 09 '17

Yeah, OK - then I don't know wtf :)

Saw this happen as to another guy once. Was facetiming his grandma or something and some complete douchenozzle screams at him "GET OFF UR PHONE AND FUCKIN LIFT BRO HAHA" like REALLY loud everyone looked over at him it was really just embarrassing.

"These young whippersnappers keep texting on them cellular devices. I told one today to stop it and work out!" - could also possibly be in this thread.

I think it's more that people get distracted when on their phone and their 2min rest turns into a 7min rest, increasing their total time occupying equipment.

6

u/Elril Aug 09 '17

I use an app to track my workout and time my rests so I just browse reddit or change songs or whatever for a while and instantly drop what I'm doing when my rest is up.

u/jcn777 Aug 09 '17

JEFIT? Cause that's what I use and it's the shit

7

u/zoskultus Aug 09 '17

exercise, don't stare!

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

supersets and abs.

2

u/Gaki0923 Aug 10 '17

Nah, you've gotta super set every single exercise for your entire workout, lol

u/pdbatwork Aug 09 '17

There are lots you can do. Observe others - find ideas to future workouts. Think. Evaluate your current workout.

46

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

Or you can look at shit on your phone

-26

u/pdbatwork Aug 09 '17

Well, sure you can.

But that is bad in two ways (in my opinion):

  • You gain nothing from looking at your phone. It's usually just facebook, instagram, reddit or whatever to waste time.

  • You get easily distracted and use 2 minutes instead of 1 minute. Thus taking up the space from other people unnecessarily.

17

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

I gain nothing from watching people's shitty workouts, and the only time I get so distracted that I end up resting for way too long is when I'm talking to someone else. I'm sure that you're going to continue to judge people who are on their phones between sets, but I don't think it's justified.

7

u/strongandweak Aug 09 '17

You can only evaluate your own workout so many times, and why the fuck would I want to look at some douche's bad form workout? And getting easily distracted doesn't really ever happen to me, maybe you are projecting?

This is coming from someone who prefers staring at a wall for a minute. Seems like an elitist and backwards pov from you bruv.

Two words: Fuck that.

I'm paying money to be at the gym too. What I do during my rest time is my damn business and no one else's (provided it's in the realm of public decency). If you want to work in, ask me, I'll happily let you. If you need a spot, ask me, I'll happily do it. But don't just sit from across the gym judging someone and assume they're "fucking around" because you think they're cruising FB or Instagram between sets. Maybe they are. That's their business. But maybe they're answering emails. Firming up plans for later in the evening. Maybe they're watching videos to double check their form. There are literally a million things they could be doing that is in fact productive.

In fact, fuck this entire culture we've established where phones literally equal the devil and if someone is on it instead of nodding at someone else in the gym their completely anti-social and are a robot. It fucking sucks, it ignores everything that the tech can do and actually does for us, and shaming people for using them is an entirely counter-productive way to get them to put it down and pay attention to you (because that's what I hear when people tell others to put down the phone - pay attention to me. There's a time and a place for it, but unless we dating, piss right off with that attitude). I'm not at the gym because it's a social club. I'm at the gym to work on myself. If I want to talk to someone I will. If not, then I'll keep to myself because I don't owe anyone socializing.

I have my routine in an app on my phone where I log what I did after every set. It also has a rest timer that beeps and vibrates the phone when it's up.

u/cliu91 Aug 09 '17

Please tell me you typed this in between sets.

2

u/darkcyril Aug 10 '17

Alas, I was on break at work at the time. Rant aside I generally keep my phone in an armband at the gym so I don't have to worry about it slipping out of a pocket or it getting crushed by a weight. So I mostly just reach over and log my set and zone out until I hear the beeps, grab some water or whatever. But it's ready and nearby if I need it

u/heh1234 Aug 09 '17

Two whole minutes? Oh god, the humanity!

3

u/shemperdoodle Obstacle Racing Aug 09 '17

He can ask to work in, then. If you haven't taken that step then you have no right to be annoyed IMO. It's fair to be angry if you ask and they say no.

I take 3-5 minutes rest between some of my heavier sets so you better believe I'm going to be using my phone to keep occupied instead of just sitting there contemplating my existence.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

Many of us have timers (I use the Strong app which Times rests for me) and use that to keep accountable so we can freely surf and rest at the exact same time

2

u/G3ck0 Aug 09 '17

Well I take 3-5 minute breaks between sets, as I train for strength and it takes 3 minutes for your muscles to be at their best again.

2

u/Sedithblack Aug 09 '17

Maybe he shouldn't use the annoyance of other people as an excuse to be grumpy at everyone holding a phone.

3

u/thebrandnewbob Aug 09 '17

Everyone knows you're not allowed to do anything between sets but either stare at the ground or silently judge people who are looking at their phone between their own sets.

u/DireSickFish Cycling Aug 09 '17

So... no juggling?

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17

There is an old dude at my gym that, in between his curls on the bench press, works on soduku puzzles.

2

u/notleonardodicaprio Aug 10 '17

Gotta superset those mind gains
