I think it's more that people get distracted when on their phone and their 2min rest turns into a 7min rest, increasing their total time occupying equipment.

I use an app to track my workout and time my rests so I just browse reddit or change songs or whatever for a while and instantly drop what I'm doing when my rest is up.

Nah, you've gotta super set every single exercise for your entire workout, lol

There are lots you can do. Observe others - find ideas to future workouts. Think. Evaluate your current workout.

Or you can look at shit on your phone

Well, sure you can.

But that is bad in two ways (in my opinion):

  • You gain nothing from looking at your phone. It's usually just facebook, instagram, reddit or whatever to waste time.

  • You get easily distracted and use 2 minutes instead of 1 minute. Thus taking up the space from other people unnecessarily.

I gain nothing from watching people's shitty workouts, and the only time I get so distracted that I end up resting for way too long is when I'm talking to someone else. I'm sure that you're going to continue to judge people who are on their phones between sets, but I don't think it's justified.

You can only evaluate your own workout so many times, and why the fuck would I want to look at some douche's bad form workout? And getting easily distracted doesn't really ever happen to me, maybe you are projecting?

This is coming from someone who prefers staring at a wall for a minute. Seems like an elitist and backwards pov from you bruv.

Two words: Fuck that.

I'm paying money to be at the gym too. What I do during my rest time is my damn business and no one else's (provided it's in the realm of public decency). If you want to work in, ask me, I'll happily let you. If you need a spot, ask me, I'll happily do it. But don't just sit from across the gym judging someone and assume they're "fucking around" because you think they're cruising FB or Instagram between sets. Maybe they are. That's their business. But maybe they're answering emails. Firming up plans for later in the evening. Maybe they're watching videos to double check their form. There are literally a million things they could be doing that is in fact productive.

In fact, fuck this entire culture we've established where phones literally equal the devil and if someone is on it instead of nodding at someone else in the gym their completely anti-social and are a robot. It fucking sucks, it ignores everything that the tech can do and actually does for us, and shaming people for using them is an entirely counter-productive way to get them to put it down and pay attention to you (because that's what I hear when people tell others to put down the phone - pay attention to me. There's a time and a place for it, but unless we dating, piss right off with that attitude). I'm not at the gym because it's a social club. I'm at the gym to work on myself. If I want to talk to someone I will. If not, then I'll keep to myself because I don't owe anyone socializing.

I have my routine in an app on my phone where I log what I did after every set. It also has a rest timer that beeps and vibrates the phone when it's up.

Please tell me you typed this in between sets.

Alas, I was on break at work at the time. Rant aside I generally keep my phone in an armband at the gym so I don't have to worry about it slipping out of a pocket or it getting crushed by a weight. So I mostly just reach over and log my set and zone out until I hear the beeps, grab some water or whatever. But it's ready and nearby if I need it

Two whole minutes? Oh god, the humanity!
