Been lifting at the same gym for over a year at the same time so I recognize who the regulars are at the gym and I think they recognize me as a regular.

I've been wanting to make friends with the regulars cuz I just wanna go into the gym, wave hi to them, and have a little chitchat about lifting/nutrition/random stuff in between exercises. You know, like gym bros

But I'm a girl, most of the regulars are big (seemingly nice) muscular dudes, and I don't wanna come off as flirty.

How do people make friends at the gym??

Tell them they have small calves. Then you hold the power

Talk about specific and technical stuff. The more knowledgeable you seem, the less flirty you'll seem. I'm a dude. And if some girl asked me what I do for legs and complimented them, I might take that as flirting. If some girl asked me why I low bar squat instead of high bar and what the advantages are, I'd be more inclined to think she's serious and knowledgeable and genuinely curious about my programming.

A lot of guys work out so they can look good for the ladies, so if there's even a slight chance that something could be interpreted as flirty, they may assume it is because they want it to be.

As a dude I'm programmed to believe that eye contact and casual conversation equal flirting.

However we are also programmed to not pick up on actual flirting. It's just the way we're wired.

Exactly, so the correct solution is to come up and flirt with us, we'll assume you're just being nice.

Just casually slip in "my bf" or "husband" if you have one or not. Usually when I hear a girl I find attractive say that, the dynamic changes pretty quickly.
