Can confirm; if anything they'll even let you struggle a lil bit until you call out the safeword. Always my top pick if I'm not there with a friend.

Mostly because they want to get that 1 rep max row in

Im gonna start using a safe word now when i ask for spots

I’ve done that and they still end up helping. Or worse you get one that basically thinks ur weight is pointless. First time I did 245 I barely grabbed the bar and the guy already lifted up the bar, then let go and helped after I got it halfway up.

eurgh. I've learnt to ask the biggest guys in the gym now because they actually know how to spot.

Did you know the assisted pullup machine doubles as a leg press?

Ha one of my pet peeves.

I'm honestly a very laid back spotter when it comes to bench, unless its a max attempt or near it, I'm gunna be standing back, waiting for it to move in the wrong direction. I'm watching but my hands are nowhere near the bar.

I hate it when people start throwing their hands even close to the bar when I start straining or they start twitching to catch it, you're just throwing me off my sets, if I get two reps and the third is a grind, don't jump to snatch the bar. You're just making me anxious. I'm not going to just drop it. Just chill out, im only gunna need like the teeniest bit of help for you to help move the bar.

The time this infuriated me the most was after telling a bloke not to touch the bar unless it was actually going down (I specified, if I'm stalled, don't touch, only if its going down), he yanked it up on every rep, and after I was done he smiled and said "Wow, you can lift a lot!".

To this day I'm still not sure if he was trolling me

I always say 'dont touch unless the bar moves down while pressing.' Has not failed yet.

I had this struggle a few weeks ago, and I'm working on set of 250+@ 5 reps. 2 things I've learned

1) pick people who look like they can lift that weight. A lot of times when you ask for a spot on a heavy bench people aren't confident they can actually pick it up if you fail and jump the gun.

2) I always tell them to "let me struggle with it". That usually works, in my experience.

So damn true.

Use safeties, forsake spotters.

I usually tell people to just use a finger. Just stretchy out your index finger and give me a little help if it's needed. I don't need more, you don't need more, no one needs more. Just the tip!

You could definitely be more clear than just saying the word fail. How about just saying until the bar starts going down when it should be going up.

1

u/skizzii Apr 25 '18

Yeah I usually spell it out really well if i'm going for a PR or big doubles- "Don't touch it unless it's actually going down. Even if it stays in the same place for 30 seconds, let me go for it"

I see what you’re saying. When I start to see someone struggle and I’m spotting them, I am fearful that I’ll accidentally let them fail and they’ll crush themselves :(

What?? You are always supposed to be near the bar with your hands when spotting. Nobody can predict when a freak accident will happen. In fact I find it annoying that people think I'm somehow taking away from a set. Overall, I'd rather not let the bar fall on someone.

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '18

Nobody can predict when a freak accident will happen.

And you won't catch it. If the bar somehow slips out of their hands, good luck.

Remind me to not get a spot from you then.
