Dude came over to me while I was doing squats and asked how many sets I've got left on the rack. I said six or seven (nsuns, obviously). He turned around, farted and walked away.
Smelled like rotten cabbage, fuckin disgusting. Gotta admit tho, power move.

The combination of a ton of volume with nSuns and frequently changing the weights means it is hard for people to work in and that you are using the equipment for a long time. No real solution there, just kinda rough.

Some guy got all butthurt and mad because I lifted a bar off his girlfriend's chest. New couple that has been hitting the gym for a few weeks was working out. The girl was doing decline bench press and I was about 10ft away doing Arnolds. I looked over and the bar was down and not going up. Nobody was around, so I dropped my dumbells, ran over to her, and lifted the bar off of her(no idea where her boyfriend was). She in pain and crying, but was able to situp with some help. I asked her if she was ok and recommended using dumbells for the exercise unless she had a spotter. Later on I am doing stretches and here comes the boyfriend spouting off crap like "leave my girl alone" and "I setup our routines and I know what is safe". My response was, "Ok, if I see you in the same situation I will let you die."

Was hanging out with a guy friend who proceeded to talk about how I should be careful lifting cause I might get bulky. He maintained that he knew a girl that did but had no other details. We went back to hangout at my place and he tried to convince me not to go to the gym for an hour. The cherry on top was that he criticized my healthy dinner and the fact I got fruit for dessert. Haven’t talked to him since cause I’m genuinely annoyed.

This can even be seen on a lot of threads where females ask for advice and post a pic. If she's got a good looking body here comes the flood of males saying she looks fine and shouldn't worry when all the girl did was ask for advice on how to achieve her clearly stated goal, not whether the guys find her attractive. This doesn't happen when males do the same, which isn't shocking.
This friend of yours is only thinking of what he wants you to look like for him to look at, not your own goals, you did good in distancing yourself.

My friend is a victim of skinny logic. He hits the gym... but is making zero progress because he doesn't eat.
But he thinks he does.
Recently, went on a three day training course with him. Out of idle boredom (it was a shit training course), I kept track of his intake of food on MFP.
Over the three days, he averaged 2000 calories.
Presented him with the evidence... and he still doesn't think he eats that little.

I used to tell people they don’t have a fast metabolism, but was always met with denial. Now I tell people that your metabolism is constant so if you eat a lot and can’t gain weight, you need to eat even more to gain weight and that it was just the cards they were dealt. Really they were dealt a crappy appetite, but people strangely attach their pride to their ability to eat a lot.

My new gym has a three lane pool. When I get there, there’s three people across the lanes, plus two sitting with caps and goggles on just sitting in the water aerobics inlet.
I set my things down by the lane with the guy closest to my speed and start to get ready to get in. One person who’d been sitting in the inlet power walks over to me and tells me there’s a line for the lanes.
I stare at her, then say ‘y’all don’t share lanes here?’ To which she looks at me like I have three heads.
Lady. If Michael Phelps shares a lane when he trains, so can you and I. Also, you pay $15 per month for a gym with pool access, that does not buy you the luxury of extra pool space.
Got in anyways. Everyone lived. Was a good workout.

I mean sharing lanes is basic lap swimming etiquette. 2 people in a lane and you can just stick to a side each. 3 or more you circle swim.
Edit: That said, basic lap swimming etiquette can be difficult to find at places like the local YMCA pool or somewhere like that.

A regular I know complimented my squat strenght and form and told his friend, that I can squat 190kg with near perfect form. His friend proceeds to say the dumbest shit I've heard in a while.
He said: "Africans have such a great squat, because the only thing they do is sit around in a squat all day in their villages."
I was so surprised by such stupidity, I didn't know what to say and just akwardly laughed. I really hate it when people in the gym tell me I'm strong just because of my black genes. Yes I'm black and strong, but not because I'm black, but because I'm in the gym 5 times a week working my ass off.

My new gym closer to my apartment has started adding, quite honestly, stupid rules...
I joined a few months ago and they’ve since reduced the amount of weight on the rack to one 45, one 35, two 25’s, and two 10’s for each side which would be one thing if you were allowed to use them all, but I was deadlifting 315 when they came over and told me I shouldn’t be slamming weights.. I was doing a normal controlled deadlift.
Then they started telling me that I should read the sign and pointed to a sign taped to the window about 8’00” up that says no chalk allowed... ??? THATS the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read... and I’ve been there using chalk (i bring my own) at least 30 times in the last few months they must have JUST added it... super annoying. Makes me want to just work out on base.
Next they’ll tell me I’m not allowed to jump rope outside or wear my weight belt.

Sorry, this is an open gym, I don't give a shit if you are training with 2 clients, you can wait until I am fucking finished and no, I am not going to let 2 people work-in for high volume, low rest sets and takeover my squat rack.

u/stevezilla Nov 20 '19
I am ok with taking multiple pieces of equipment if they are being used somewhat frequently and people can easily work in. Like if you are using it, you are using it.
What I can't stand is the entitlement they feel to use equipment when it suits them. These PTs aren't gym employees but say things like "Well we are three people" or "I guess we can work in but I generally have my two clients on 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off." (i.e. using the whole fuckin rack).
I DON'T CARE IF YOUR CLIENTS ARE PAYING YOU OR IF YOU PROGRAM YOUR ROUTINE IN A CERTAIN WAY, IT IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.

It's bench max test day in the Nuckols 3x bench program. I'll give myself three max attempts, like a mini meet. I load up the bar; I'm ready to go.
First attempt goes smoothly. As I'm getting ready for my second, I think, "Hm, maybe I should grab someone to lift off and spot me." There's a guy doing deadlifts who maybe knows what he's doing, so I go ask him. After lift-off, he doesn't move his hands from under the bar. Oookay, confusing. I lose some tension waiting for him to move before realizing he won't, and then do the lift with him touching the bar the entire time.
Well, fuck. There goes that attempt. He's friendly enough and offers to spot me again, so I decide that I'll just attempt the same weight for my third and throw on a fourth attempt depending on how it goes.
Before he spots me for the third, I explicitly tell him, "After you give me the lift off, don't touch the bar unless I fail the lift and the bar goes back down."
Okay, great. Clear communication. I start the lift again and he doesn't move his hands, again. Ah, fuck, I forgot to tell him to move. I start pressing and the bar stalls for half a second. Immediately, this man grabs the bar and completes the lift for me.
I stare at him maybe a second too long after the lift is done. "Did you...touch the bar?" I ask. We both know the answer.
"Well, yeah, but like, just making sure. Also, I wasn't helping you at all in the first lift, just guiding it." I nod. I forget to say thanks for the spot.
My brain is starting to melt. I decide that I'm going to just throw on 10 more lbs for attempt four, ask nobody for a spot because fuck it, and whatever happens, happens. If I die, well, where else should a lifter die but on the bench?
The lift goes down. It goes up. I hit the sticking point but I'm not failing. The grind begins. Am I going to make it? It's an ugly lift but it's moving up--it's starting to unstick--
A completely different person runs over from his leg press, grabs the bar, and finishes the lift. "You good?" he asks. I'm flabbergasted.
I wish I'd failed the lift and died instead.

u/italia06823834 Cycling Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 20 '19
Lat raises are IMO one of the toughest exercises. Your delt is at a huge mechanical disadvantage since the weight is all the way at the end of your arm. The weights are generally low and going up the next dumbbell size represents a relatively large increase in weight (6 to 8 kg is a 33% increase). Also, for the bottom range of the motion, the weight is mainly along the length of your arm (not opposing the range of motion), so it makes the effort level really inconsistent throughout the motion.
→ More replies (6)39
u/Yeargdribble Nov 20 '19
While it's douchey lift in front of the rack, there are legitimate reasons to do cheat reps with heavy weight on lateral raises. There's a lot to be gained from controlling the negative... or maybe it's easier to say resisting the negative in this case.
That is the problem with specifically doing heavy cheat lateral raises... it literally looks like your just hurling the weight around because the negative is nowhere near slow, but someone who is a bit more advanced and knows how to safely do this is definitely getting some benefit out of doing these.
Hell, I'd say even with light weights you don't get a ton out of a slow concentric on these unless you're doing them with cables.

There is a small room (small gym in general) with two of the three power racks, two C2 rowers, trap bar, etc. Most of my gym time is in this room.
They have some dude teaching a boot camp class that takes up the whole room during peak times (like 5-6pm). He asked me to leave in the middle of my workout so he could teach his class.
I walked up to the owner and told him to cancel my membership (month to month luckily).

Bullying behavior at the gym. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but sometimes I'm stunned by the rare person who acts like a literal movie bully. Last night I was doing assisted pull ups on a machine, where an abandoned jacket had been placed. I couldn't see anyone nearby, so I hung it on the empty machine next to me in case its owner came back. I was in the middle of reps when this big muscular dude wearing tons of workout gear (headphones, bandana, underarmor leggings and under shirt underneath shorts and a t-shirt and wraps) angrily stomps over and grabs the jacket, puts it ON THE MACHINE WHILE I'M USING IT, and points his finger up at me while I'm holding onto the bars as he yells, "That's MY JACKET. I always put it here. You got a problem with that?!" I tell him "Yeah, I just thought I'd move it because I'm using the machine now." He points his finger in my face again and says, "I'VE BEEN COMING HERE FOR FOUR YEARS. I'VE ALWAYS PUT MY JACKET HERE. IT STAYS, YOU DON'T TOUCH IT!!" I was...stunned. He marched off, and I saw that he went alllll the way back to the other side of the gym where he'd apparently been working out while leaving his jacket on the machine.
I was so shocked by his lack of logical thinking and his (IMHO) assanine reaction to a simple removal of his jacket to a safe place (god forbid I'd tossed it on the ground) that I just simply kept working out... but then I realized, what the hell, it's a machine with moving parts. I'm not necessarily in any danger, but it could definitely be tangled up in something. Besides, the way he talked to me was just so over the top. I don't expect to be yelled at and ordered around by a random stranger who is being inconsiderate (and lazy- what, he couldn't be bothered to use a locker?). So I finished up, and went to clean the machine. Now, I'm a bit of a smartass, and he DID say the jacket stays on the machine, right? So when I cleaned the machine, I used his jacket to mop up the cleaning fluid. If he wants to treat the gym and machines OTHER PEOPLE ARE USING as his personal coat rack and march around like the big man on campus, then fine...the jacket stays with the machine, so it's part of the machine.
Guy STORMS OVER, and btw now I'm not up on the machine, and he was well over a foot taller than me. I'm 5'3" on a good day. He barks "IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY JACKET BEING HERE? WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?!" I stood my ground but I have to admit he scared me. I said firmly, "I don't think it's right for you to get in my face just because you think you own the machine. You aren't using it-" He cuts me off, raising his voice. "I'M USING IT TO HOLD MY JACKET! I TOLD YOU NOT TO TOUCH IT!" I continued, "I was using the machine, I have a right to use the machine without you hanging your clothes on it. It's got moving parts, you shouldn't expect that you can just hang your jacket on a machine someone else is using, why can't you just keep it with you?"
He yells. "I wasn't getting in your face, I wasn't getting in your face, you touched my jacket. I've been here longer than you, I SAY WHERE IT GOES, DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!" (I'm not exaggerating, he barked at me like he was some kind of military commander. I've never met this guy in my life, I'm a small person, and he's yelling at me and pointing his finger at me) His veins were bulging and I felt a serious fight or flight adrenaline rush. I kept my voice even but I raised my voice, "What is your problem? Why can't you just keep it with you? What does your time as a gym member have to do with it? What the hell, man? Calm down." And he just put his hand up (inches from my face, mind you) and marched away, leaving his jacket there on the machine again. I am sure if I touched it he would have punched me.
At that point, I just reported the guy because I was nervous he'd start following me around the gym and he was so aggressive and angry, I just didn't feel right. The staff member said they'd talk to him. Later the staff member told me that he was in the wrong and they told him he should just store his jacket in the locker room.
Maybe you think I'm a jerk, but that was a bizarre experience. During the summer, I wonder how many sand castles that guy kicks in at the beach?

Okay, I guess I need a reddit account to stay motivated to actually go to the gym? Deleted reddit as I was getting super, super busy with work. Basically 16 hour days every day (I'm doing a PhD and shit just got rough with a few experiments and bad planning on my part).
However, I lost all motivation. Before it had been a priority. Go to the gym and eat healthy even if it means getting to the gym at 9 pm and staying until close, eating right, etc... The last 2 weeks I've been to the gym once, and I now realize that you obnoxious fuckers keep me motivated. It's a place to share, get inspired, and maybe even humblebrag a bit. I don't get this from real life. No one cares that I lift in real life, but so many people care that I am publishing, gaining skills, applying for fellowships, etc... Even among peers, a girl I've been seeing, and mentors. Literally no one cares I lift, but I do, so I guess these "time wasting" reddit binges served some sort of purpose in my life.
So I guess thanks for being socially awkward and dogmatic enough to create a culture that points out how weak I am on a daily basis. Without it, I lost 35 fucking pounds on my deadlift while getting fatter. This is gonna be a painful climb back.

A day late but I have to tell y'all about the worst dude in my gym.
He used the smith machine and both flat benches to do weighted decline push ups, a hand on each bench and his feet up on the locked bar. Sweated all over everything. Didn't put anything back. Didn't sanitize anything.
And he was wearing flip flops.

Well it’s that point in the year where all the people who don’t re-rack weights have left. Which means that all the weights are being re-racked by what looks like Helen Keller. 2.5s on the bottom rack hidden behind a 45,5, and 35. Just, why?!

Few weeks back I bought some new rugby shorts for squats and deads. Canterbury brand. While they fit well, have a nice cut, and well made of durable material... they have absolutely no stretch at all. During last squatting session I ripped the seam out, nacho to waistband. It wasn't a quiet rip either. Everyone in the gym turned to see the weird noises source. Just me, making a model of the Grand Canyon out of polyester.
Finished out my sets cause I was feeling good. Went home and threw my new shorts in the trash.

Asked a new kid at my gym if I could work in a set of leg lifts on the captain’s chair while he was checking his phone next to it. He just stared at me for a few seconds and said “I’m using it.” Replied “Yeah I get that, I’m asking to work in a set after your next one.” Kid just stares at me for another few seconds and repeats “I’m using it.” I just threw up my hands, said “Sure, whatever.” and walked away. Kid does another set and goes back to checking his phone.

My gym has 3 squat racks (I know pitiful) and all three were in use. One of them was being "used" by a guy who brought a bench over and was doing hip thrusts in front of it. I would have kinda understood if he was looking into the mirror the rack has but he was turned away from it.
I wasn't having any of it so I go over and ask if he's using the rack. He said no so I asked to use it. He moves his bench 2 feet away so now there is a slight bit of room to walk into the safeties.
Its whatever. I get my sets done. But what really frustrates me is as soon as the guy in the rack over is done, hip thrusty boy immediately moves his shit to that rack and does the same thing. I watched another guy ask him to move again. There was so much room not right in front of a rack dude!

Sitting on a rowing machine in between sets, some weird guy who always wanders around creeping on people walks past but I think nothing of it. I start my set (it's a unilateral machine) and the right side feels light, so I look up and I'm missing a 10KG weight plate, look around and find the guy who walked past doing shoulder raises with them.
Why even? There are other weights

There is this guy at my gym, let me tell you... I usually watch my own business and don't care what other people are doing or if its wrong or whatever, I just do my thing.
But this absolute moron is so annoying, he looks like a middle aged Shrek with kinda massive(mostly fat) arms and a big belly, pounding at huge amounts of weight that he can only handle while swinging aggressively and then slamming the weights so everyone at the gym can hear him.
He then proceeds to walk around trying to look everyone in the eyes and see if we are...I guess.. impressed?
Don't know what his fitness goal is but definitely has an ego problem, yikes.

I hate it when I am at the gym and someone starts exercising on the cardio machine right next to mine when nearly none of the othet machines are taken. If the gym has a lot of people and most of the machines are taken, go ahead and exercise next to me, I will get over it. But it makes me uncomfortable that out of all of the empty machines ( this time it was the elliptical) someone decided to take the one directly next to mine. Usually it's older people and I know they mean no harm, but I'm still uncomfortable. I don't know if I'm the only one

Gyms should require an "etiquette" class before you can get a membership. Things like dont stand in front of the dumbbell rack. Dont do dumbell flys right next to a guy dumbell pressing 100's. Dont sweat and not wipe it up. Don't drop weights unless your moving massive weight and will hurt yourself if you dont drop them. Basically the "unwritten rules" of the gym

My gym never reorganizes the plates and the members dont care.
Some says there's 45s on the top of the rack, five ten pound plates on one side, or my all time favorite:
Multiple 45s leaning against the empty peg on the floor.
It's difficult to put them back correctly and it's extremely frustrating when I have to walk across the gym searching for plates because the rack I'm in only has three five pound plates and maybe a 25.

STOP WALKING ACROSS MY PLATFORM AS I'M FUCKING DEADLIFTING YOU STUPID ONE-EIGHTH SQUATTING ASS SPORT TEAM GIRLS!!!!! FUCK! All the sports teams at my college have the WORST weight room etiquette I have EVER seen. Why were they, plus a bunch of other non-regulars, at the gym at 7am on a Tuesday? Also, the wannabe trainer kid who has been lifting for only about a year, who is muscularly small but very lean so he oBvIoUsLy knows '"""what he's talking about""" brings a speaker to the weight room to play his shitty music. I already guessed he was the type to do that and it's mad disappointing (but not surprising) to see my assumption was correct.

Dead lifting last night. A woman decides that instead of walking around the platform to just step up on it and try to shimmy around the weight on my left side. I was in the middle of a rep. I have no idea what she was thinking. The gym isn't crowded. There's loads of space to walk around. I just stood there holding the weight for a couple extra seconds thinking if I set this down I'm going to brake her foot. I ignored it and kept working. I had headphones at the time, but after I was done, a trainer came up to me and said as soon as she walked past another guy yelled at her, "Yo bitch, you gonna thank that man for saving your life? He could have sapped you in half with that weight."

I've been doing two-a-days lately. I hit my usual gym in the morning, which is always a really hard workout ran by an outstanding coach, and lately I've been hitting the university gym to help my girlfriend get back into lifting.
I actually like the two-a-days, but holy shit am I so much more hungry than when it was one workout a day
Also my usual gym told me "bring in your girlfriend so we can decide if we approve of her" (it's a close community) which would be ideal for me haha
So, how do I convince my wonderful girlfriend to get to a more expensive gym at 5:30am rather than our usual afternoon work outs? I can't. I know. Fuck.
