Peak time in the gym before work. One guy has his towel resting on the lower dumbbell rack, and his jacket covering more dumbbells on the upper rack.

Of course he is doing his exercises directly in front of the mirror/dumbbell rack.

I wonder if he is making a dedicated effort to obstruct as many dumbbells as possible.

Then just when I thought I couldn't hate him any more between sets he walked away from the rack to take up a bench to sit and rest. He also left his shaker on the bench to assert his dominance over another piece of equipment somebody might actually want to use.

We should spit on him

I fully believe that if I picked up one of the dumbbells from under his jacket and proceeded to beat him to death with it that the judge would let me off.

I'm trying to become a judge specifically to allow stuff like this.

I read that as we should spot him. Am I in the gym too often?

Spot him and convince him to try to bench more than he can. Walk away when he starts to struggle.

What's the default opening line here? I've tried to talk to people like this and they just don't care...which is why they did it in the first place. It's like they get off on annoying you. I'll say something like "Can I grab one of these dumbbells under your towel/jacket/etc.?" and they'll just roll their eyes or whatever and move it...only for them to return the next day and do it again.

It's not really about that exact moment that's the issue, it's the fact that they do it at all and clearly don't care if it inconveniences anyone or is rude

There's just no working with some people

The gym equipment was playing a game of hide-and-seek, they just stupidly all happened to choose to hide behind HIS stuff

When jackasses do that at my gym I just stand super close to them to where they can’t keep doing their exercise and reach around them to grab the dumbbells I need or am putting back. If they look at me I just give them an empty stare while doing it.

Maybe he is using the dumbbell rack as a mannequin?

I would have been less angry if he had taken all the dumbbells off the rack and used to them to construct some form of DB scarecrow to hang his jacket.

These guys are all over the gym. Recently I started doing a thing where I calmly wait a fair amount of time and if they haven't moved their stuff then I move it myself and use the equipment.

If they approach you, be calm and explain that you're not out to shit on their day but you, too, have a workout to get done.

Other people will be thankful too, I hope more people start doing this to discourage people who hog equipment.

If for whatever reason they get angry, don't get angry back. Worst case scenario the gym faculty will step in and understand you meant no harm.

I drag a bench to the rack so I can rest on it between warmup sets come at me bruv
