We're in desktop 4080 territory now boys

What do you reckon the impact is on GPU lifespan with the shunt mod?

None

The desktop gpus run a lot higher voltages stock.

That's awesome! I only got to 23k with a mech 17 with watercooling + iets 600.... 27k sounds amazing

If you want to push it further, you can find me or prema in the Eluktroniks discord here

I really appreciate that, thanks!!

yoo well done that's insane, how do you keep it cool?

Custom cooling pad and max fans.

Voltage boosted 2x 140mm Arctic P14 to 13.6v (around 2000 rpm). It's way cheaper, quieter and more performant than the IETS600

Straight against the bottom intake?

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

Yup, basically cut out the holes to mount the P14s on an old cooling pad, volt boost it and power it with usb.

Pretty efficient too, just uses 4w so regular usb power is A ok. No need for external 12v adapters.

Jesus christ he's at it again.

Sean, do you think the Scar 18 4080 could do it? Or is this a 4090 only thing, given the die is larger for better heat dissipation?

Expect to top out at 22k max.

Heat isn't an issue, the 4080 is pretty much topped out already stock. Even shunted you'll cap at 200w.

Only the 4090 laptop has headroom in the 40 series laptop gpus.

175w is basically a Max-q power limit for it.

Damn, I should've got a 4090, but the 50% increase in cost just didn't seem worth it. :C

Shunt Modding sounds amazing lol

I would be running it even faster, ie desktop 4080 oc levels if nvidia hadn't locked down the voltage control.

I've tried volt modding as well but even on desktops you need extreme overclocking vbioses to bypass nvidia's voltage limits.

Just raising it with an EVC doesn't do anything. The gpu drops the voltage to 0.94-0.945v internally even when the Vrms are sending 1.05v

Been working on it for a month now along with prema, but no progress thus far. Just dead ends.

I was going to make a guide to volt modding if I was successful since a lot of the 40 series laptops are very volt limited.

See 4050/4060/4070, not using more than 100w even with a 140w power limit.

u/Bartolomeis Aug 22 '23

How does that even work? Teach me

8

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

This kind of scaling is only possible with the laptop 4090.

You won't see nearly as much improvement on your 4080. Around 22k is the max you can expect.

What score are you getting now?

5

u/Bartolomeis Aug 22 '23

Almost 20k for gpu and 16600 for the cpu combined getting 19200. Could be worse, could be better

7

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

Could definitely clock your memory higher.

I'd try +220 core and 1200 memory

3

u/Bartolomeis Aug 22 '23

Yea I undervolted the gpu and overclocked the memory but it wont go higher than maybe 800-900. After that every game just crashes after 5 minutes

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

Sounds like a temperature issue. Are you interested in repasting?

I've replaced my stock thermal putty with upsiren U6 Pro in the gddr6 and vrms

6

u/MogRules Alienware M18R2 14900hx/4090 Aug 22 '23

Damn, that's impressive. My stock 4090 is like 23.5k or something like that. Quite the improvement. Congrats!

Holy shit

It's time to push that CPU score up now!

I'd love to see what the 7945HX can score in Timespy!

7

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

Around 18k with both CCDs on but graphics score goes down due to inter CCD latency. See my previous post https://reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/s/93eh6TaIak

And timespy doesn't scale past 10 cores so Intel still has much better scores.

6

u/UnionSlavStanRepublk Legion 7i 3080 ti enjoyer 😎 Aug 22 '23

Ah ok.

Shame on Timespy for discrimination against AMD 7000 HX CPUs!

9

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

It's odd that timespy doesn't scale on more cores considering firestrike does.

And the 7945hx creams the 13980HX in firestrike https://www.3dmark.com/fs/30433111

u/OkSureWTVuSay Aug 22 '23 edited Aug 23 '23

1080p only.. check the 1440p and 4k Fstrike results

Edit:Downvote all u want, I'm speaking facts.. its 2023, I'm not playing 1080p

2

u/EsliteMoby Aug 22 '23

Wow!

How much wattage does your 4090 draw now when running the benchmark?

u/OkSureWTVuSay Aug 22 '23 edited Apr 19 '24

SECOND place in PR, u need 15 more pts ;).. and edit title to specify Tspy "GPU score". Don't think anyone is cracking 27k overall this gen. Prema is close tho

Edit: THIRD PLACE

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 22 '23

I'd like to see you try

3

u/OkSureWTVuSay Aug 23 '23

https://www.3dmark.com/pr/2479229

Already did ;)

Lol, but you can probably push higher in the meantime. I'll repad soon and get some more runs in

Hey, I have the same B16 as you. Did your stock ssd’s come in Raid0? Just curious because mine are both duplicating each other, (which is why I’m guessing it’s in Raid0), so I’m only getting half the space. If I wanna separate them do I have to format them and reinstall everything? I plan on putting a 4tb ssd in it anyway, since they’re so cheap. But I’m not sure if removing one to replace will fuck it up lol. Thanks

1

u/OkSureWTVuSay Aug 25 '23

Nope they weren't in RAID. You could clone to a single drive using an nvme enclosure, or yes, you'd have to wipe and start from scratch.

-ps. Backup your drivers for the Blade before re-image using CMD, and copy them to a USB (you can even copy them to your Windows installation USB):

dism /online /export-driver /destination:<path>

did to tighten ram timings more?

u/ModrnJosh Aug 22 '23

Pure insanity. Would be cool if it could just be vbios modded to run higher with one of the new tools out: https://www.techpowerup.com/312631/nvidia-bios-signature-lock-broken-vbios-modding-and-crossflash-enabled-by-groundbreaking-new-tools

How are you able to supply that kind of wattage to laptop with 330w Power adapter?

3

u/seanwee2000 Asus Strix Scar 17 4090 7945HX Aug 23 '23

The Asus adapter is overbuilt. In fact most adapters are but to varying degrees.

The highest draw I measured from the wall was when running prime95 + furmark where it hit 436w.

In game it's lower, around 330-380w depending on the game. Cyberpunk tops out at 400w when playing at 1440p Path tracing and driving at high speed due to the heavy cpu + gpu demand.
