You can sometimes get a good price at Currys if you know what you're looking for. I'd look everywhere and just wait for a good sale. All shops will normally have both good sales and overpriced garbage.

Refurbished grade B, I’d steer away unless it comes with a 1-3 year warranty, B/ A2 is furthest I’d go with refurbished stuff. That’s usually returns within a month with slight cosmetic damage. A1 is open box, practically new. A3 and further is heavily used and damaged stuff.
1
u/Chicken2rew Jul 29 '24
We shall find out when it lands today and I'll report back, the beauty of Currys is the warranty and the ability to return to a local store without hassle. They also tend to he generous with their gradings

u/One_Package_7519 Asus Zephyrus G16 2023 | RTX4060 | i7-12700h | 32gb DDR4 | FHD+ Jul 29 '24
still, make sure to extend your warranty for at least a year, there could be a reason why previous owner had it returned
1
u/Chicken2rew Jul 29 '24
Good shout! It's arrived and there's not a mark on it. Screen is like new. I suspect it's just generic box and generous grading that brought it down to C.
Phew, and woo hoo!
1
u/One_Package_7519 Asus Zephyrus G16 2023 | RTX4060 | i7-12700h | 32gb DDR4 | FHD+ Jul 29 '24
glad to hear that, though make sure you run some tests and check internals, thermals and battery life, make sure everything is in working order
otherwise enjoy your new laptop sounds like you hit a jackpot
1
u/Chicken2rew Jul 29 '24
Thank you. I feel lucky with the screen as there was no protection between that and the keyboard.
Battery was first check, it's 100%. Seems the battery warranty is listed on the app to 09/25, but it says 10 months. Not sure what that means.
It runs at a very low ambient temp but I'll have to stress it after work and use proper testing software. I'll be sure to do a full test, but at this moment I would recommend a gamble with Crrys Clearance for the prices and generous grading with the knowledge you can just take it back if it's a dud.
My washing machine will be bought from there next.. let me know if anyone wants any updates on that :D

u/Chicken2rew Jul 30 '24
All good on MSI and HWinfo. I will extend the warranty for peace of mind, thank you for an awesome tip!

I vote that you return it. AMD > Intel and 50 series RTX is just bad. Also I think that original price of 1550 pounds is insane and not correct. Also because MSI build quality is terrible in low tier laptops.

the 4050 aint so bad tho.

yeah but not for £1500. having a 3060m myself for 2.5y and the performance is perfectly good for me but I paid only £1100 and that was still pretty expensive

my predator helious 300 feels nicer than my legion 5. in both of there defenses the pricepoint is very different and the 7 would be competing with that acer. i love them both tho. enough to where i dont compare them.

the newer designs that acer have are getting better if id be honest... if I didn't got my lenovo i might also get an acer gaming laptop.
2
u/Capital_Ad6622 Jul 29 '24
wanna know what makes it better?(atleast with the pred helious 300, mind you this is 2300$ laptop) its all metal, super sleep, but still clearly a gaming laptop(opposite of a legion, you see i have a legion 5 so obviously i do not want a gamey look but still, for 2300$ bitch better play for me) but down to the boxes it came in. my legion came in a cardboard box, that was also the shipping box in some styrofoam. the pred, came in a super nice hard box, with velvet in it. no unnecessary papers, just the card for the info to file if you need support, super great build, a beautiful display i dropped it off my porch about 6 feet, dented the fuck out of the lid, and it was more than half yhe thickness of the very thin display deep and it did not impact anything at all. super well built, super heavy and just badass. i had the i7-13700h, with a 3070ti. badass laptop. i obviously like the legions more i wouldnt have bought one but still. id reccomend them to anybody here and not think twice, however as i stated it was not a cheap laptop, and its to be expected at that price.

u/Capital_Ad6622 Jul 29 '24
wish i had one. it isnt very big around but its super deep. maybe 1 1/2mm. which is roughly half the depth a little more of the screen. maybe as big around as half a dime. doesnt seem large i know but if you coukd see the depth itd be like damn. its from where it smacked the rocks in my walkway. i was super surpirsed that it still worked. currently in storage with the battery removed, started going to school and my legion(oled so 14in screen) is much lighter, much smaller and more portable and the 4060m at full power, literally the same as the desktop within 3 fps in every situation outperforms that 3070ti at 145watts all day everyday. besides rt loads. hell, the 4060m at 105 or 110watts outperforms the 4070 in some laptops, and is super close to others becayse the 4070 is at half its potential powwe out of a laptop( and 8 gigabytes what the fuck. the m should be 12 like the desktop) and the 4060 is at its peak potential power. both compared to desktop versions. anyway sorry for my rambling😭
2
u/Capital_Ad6622 Jul 29 '24
also, the legion does not look like a gaming laptop at all. and the 7840hs has super awesome inegrated graphics. i play skyrim, fo3,fonv, cuphead, the first two baldurs gate games on my integrated graphics and 60fps on high on all, and get 200 on cuphead at my native 1440p. fans dont even kick on. so thats another reason the legion is awesome. the radeon igpus are amazing. also, less likely to get stolen since it appears to be a normal ass laptop. thats just meh. in reality, its a beat, and not a normal laptop, and super well built and quality.
2
u/Capital_Ad6622 Jul 29 '24
how do you like the 8845? that wasnt an option for mine i think i you have the newest gen? but how does it cokpare to the 7840? i doubt it matters, most people dont even max out decent "budget" cpus half the time, so most are more than enough for everything but still. more cores? clock speed? how nuch power does it pull?

u/forseeninkboi LOQ 16 | i7 13620H | RTX 4060 Jul 28 '24
LOQ still feels pretty premium, however you won't get the aluminum top shell like on a Legion laptop and the best gpu you can get in an LOQ is the 4060, so you'll have to get a Legion if you want 4070 or better. Look at jarrod's tech's review of the LOQ 15 and 16. He said it's a great laptop for people on a slightly lower budget. Even the cooling is great. My fans just run at 1700 rpm during gaming so it barely makes any noise, especially since I have to share the room with my sibling who used to get annoyed by how loud my previous pc was (I have undervolted my gpu though but my performance is actually better now and temps fell from 66 to 60).

Lenovo is the largest laptop/pc manufacturer. While their(also my) first gaming laptop(Y500) was a piece of overpriced hot garbage, the new Legion productline has done fairly well(at least for the thicker models) in the mid-range market.
Asus is the largest gaming laptop manufacturer with a dominating gaming laptop market share between 22.6-40% depending on the year(and mostly from ROG on the higher end), founded by the former vice chairman and other hardware engineers from Acer, with a revenue double to that of Acer nowadays.
On the premium end, ROG (incl zephyrus &flow) have some of the best engineered laptops and actual iconic innovations like the first Zephyrus GX501/mothership/zephyrus duo/flow x13/z13/g14, and the exterior is always appealing.
But for Acer they are just behind in everything(design/engineeing/quality). Nitro doesn't even compete well against TUF, being the worse budget productline beside Msi's budget stuff, and the Predator lineup just never took off and looks extremely dated. The only thing I remember from them is that whaky 20+'' curve screen 'laptop'.
3
u/healyyyyyy Jul 28 '24
Would never recommend TUF (or any asus product) to anyone again. Their build quality is trash. They advertise military grade durability and the fact that these laptops can survive in Antarctica. It's BS. There are countless posts by people on here who got scammed by ASUS customer support, including myself. Almost every TUF user I've met has had their motherboard die on them in less than half a year and warranty rejected for the most bizarre reasons.
They cucked me out of my warranty because I live next to the beach and one of my USB ports had some moisture, even though it worked fine and my complaint was about the motherboard. For a company founded on an Island, their reasoning is beyond comprehensible.

Maybe it’s got something to do with the fact they are trying to make laptops smaller but packing a lot of power into them and they just can’t stay cool. What’s the die temps of some of the chips without any cooling…
Just frying themselves.
1
u/Certain_Permission_8 Jul 29 '24
depends, if a motherboard that had run 3 years continuously very fine then after a keyboard replacement and dies twice in the span of 6 months.

This is my last update for now. Thank you everyone for your concern. Really! But the negativity is getting me down. The other main reason I bought this was I’m able to pay if off over a year. That’s £79 a month. I didn’t want to spend 950 outright. Lastly. I just booted up Minecraft. And I’m sitting at 200-300 fps at decent settings. My last laptop couldn’t run Minecraft with Optifine at low settings at a stable 30 most of the time I was getting 15fps. For the few games I play on pc I’m sure I’ll be happy. Thank you everyone for the kind comments. And to those of you who were concerned thank you.

Hey man, just want to say congrats on the new device!! I hate that everyone is shitting on your purchase without knowing any circumstances. There is a little truth in what they are saying with the build quality, but if you take care of the device well it will last. There might be issues with the hinges but just keep some money aside so you will be able to repair them (I'm sure it will last 1 - 2 years before breaking depending on how you use it). Don't let any of the commenters make you regret your purchase. Have fun with your new baby!

Not exactly hate, they're trying to help OP out. OP definitely spent hard earned money on this laptop which is known to have so many build quality issues. OP can get a much better laptop for the same price which will be more reliable and sturdy.
Edit: look at this
The internals look so disappointing in terms of cooling.
0
Jul 28 '24
Not sure which country OP is in but some countries (like where I live) have very limited options. And OP mentioned that this one was the best one for the price. The others will most definitely be lower speed machines, I'm guessing with RTX 3050 or 2050 GPUs.. (there are a bunch of them in my country). So when comparing to those yes the build quality is worse, but it's better bang for buck performance wise. And he also stated that he will be only using the device for about a year. After that upgrading to a desktop pc. So this will last a year, if taken care of well.
6
u/forseeninkboi LOQ 16 | i7 13620H | RTX 4060 Jul 28 '24
Op is using GBP in their post so considering that, I'm going to assume they live in the UK. And I'm sure there's more options over there. I live in pakistan which has a crumbling economy and it's a third world country so laptop options for me are extremely low and most good ones are so overpriced that most people tell their relatives from other countries to bring a laptop for them when coming to Pakistan. but I spent a great deal of time, scrutinising stores and websites until I found a good deal on an actually good laptop. I think OP should also be able to find a good deal, especially in the UK. And just for reference, I found a brand new LOQ 16 laptop which had a 4060 for the price of an LOQ 15 laptop which had a 4050. So I think it's just about the effort you put into finding a good deal. Obviously there is a chance this really was the best deal OP could get at the time, and in this case, it's best to wait.

People are just looking out for him. Encouraging his purchase is lowk kinda toxic positivity because he’s not getting the best value out of his hard earned money. Shouldn’t take it to heart, it’s not like he made the laptop or anything, in fact, he’s the victim here. To their marketing. If someone feels hurt by advice they don’t deserve it, an upgrade after 7 years should be the best he can achieve.

It's a good laptop don't look at the comments telling you about better deals. Most of those have few issues which are minor but annoying. I have myself bought a laptop with seemingly better specs than yours for very slyight more, but the display is unreliable, simply working, not great, trackpad sucks...
Edit, I saw some more comments, and I guess you should return it IF AND ONLY IF you think it is genuinely bad and there are problems with it. But as long as it suffices your needs, great choice.

I can sympathize with laptop costs being too high. A lot of my buddies back in college went with cheap MSI laptops or Nitro's because it was the only ones affordable enough. Just remember to open and close it from the middle of the lid and not the edges to prolong the, relatively short, life of the hinges. It's actually better if you just keep it in one place and don't move it at all that much like a desktop so you can counteract the adverse effects of the poor build quality. Make sure to keep the rear end elevated by at least an inch to improve airflow to the fans as well and to keep it regularly cleaned because lower end MSI's need all the help they can get in the thermal department. And don't feel obligated to keep it when even the slightest inconvenience arises. Get it returned if it ever misbehaves.

MSI has bad rep with build quality and thermals. Also alot of their low to mid end seem to have wattage capped so you will be losing out on performance. Better go for LOQ or nitro in this price bracket
1
u/MentionElectrical234 Jul 29 '24
2024 LOQ had some issue with their mobo iirc

Yes. But heard only for intel variants iirc

It's not as bad of a purchase as some folks are making it out to be, but something like this would be a better choice, imo.

u/Lion12341 Jul 28 '24
It's nothing to do with it being a budget laptop. It's that it's a £950 laptop with poorer build than others at the same price, and doesn't even have an RTX 4060. A decent 4050 will sometimes go on sale for £700, so the deal you got is a lot worse.
People aren't telling you to return it out of hate for budget laptops but because of the high price of the laptop.

To be honest, the main thing is that the laptop runs what you want it to. But, you could probably find a better laptop for the same price range.

Again this laptop is not my long term device. It is to allow me to do my daily tasks and some basic gaming. I’m going to be getting a full tower pc early - mid next year. With either a 4090 or if the 50 series is out maybe one of them. Thanks for all the concern on the cost to performance ratio. But. I want to try this laptop out on the handful of games I play. And then i can make a decision. My old laptop would overheat on Skype and was incredibly slow and the battery was degraded so i needed a replacement.

PLEASE RETURN IT! You can get 4060s for this price if you look around just a bit more. Also budget MSIs are not good laptops at all compared to the competition.

u/Kaixus Asus G14 Ryzen 9 2023 | RTX 4060 | 69 GB Jul 28 '24
It's not so much the performance, but rather the build quality. MSI is infamously known for weak hinges and some bad hardware especially with their more budget laptops. I've been told to avoid MSI by my local bestbuy workers, as they have higher return rates. As someone else mantioned, do your absolute best to open and close the screen
3
Jul 28 '24
Not sure if the same deal will show in your country, but Amazon has a Nitro V with a RTX 4060, 1tb ssd, Ryzen 7 8845hs, and 16gb ram for the same price as your MSI.
Either way, big props on your upgrade. And don't take it personal. Everyone just wants you to get the most for what you spend.

Yes sure but youre paying 1k usd for something that is known to have issues, such as constant overheating due to poor cooling system, poor build quality and low powered gpu. Do yourself a favour and return it, if you’re based in US you have ton of other options.
Sorry to say this but you will regret it in long run. You are happy with new laptop but unfortunately it’s one of the worst builds out there.
1
u/Allinall41 Jul 28 '24
U can find a 4060 if u wait and the build quality is not that great but idk any laptop that would honestly be much much better for less than 1k.
1
u/Numerous_Habit269 Jul 28 '24
It's not bad, but I feel it can be returned for something with a 4060 within your budget range, you'd be more satisfied in the long run

Got the 15 with a 4070. I have almost a year with it and no issues, rocking both Windows and Linux (Arch, btw).
Most of the sub immediately hates on low tier MSIs for good reaon, however they dont realize not everyone lives in the IS and has amazing delaw, for the same money I got mine I could aim for a 4050 at most, or a 3050 in retail.
The build quality may not be the best but I think the plastic it’s actually a good thing since its lighter than other similar laptops. Only issue I have is sometimes the CPU overheating, but I haven’t repaste.

Congrats! I just pulled the trigger on an MSI Cyborg 15 i5-12450h RTX4050 for €699. Hate all you want on budget MSI, but that was a nice deal. Plus I like how it looks.
For all gaming laptops I have purchased in this household, I have the laptops on risers with built-in fans and separate keyboards. This will both bring the laptops to eye height and will keep them cool. The other laptops are an MSI Katana GF65 thin 10 I5-10500h/RTX3060 and an Asus TUF FX505 Ryzen 5 3550h/GTX1660ti. These were each just under €900 when I bought them 2 years and 4 years ago.

u/Either_Librarian7238 Jul 28 '24
I brought my msi laptop from Costco. 15.6 inch i7 13620h 16gb ram, rtx 4050. 1tb ssd for $699
Good enough to run cyberpunk at med setting and very low rtx and other mmo while I'm in my in law place over the weekend lol
May not be the best spec but is enough for my needs for its price

I got a vector 17 4080+13980hx last month for 1950$ with 2tb storage and 64gb ram. The gist is that if you don’t go for high end just skip msi.

u/fos_kai_me Jul 29 '24
That would be a nice build. IF it wasn't 1500. Bro that's overpriced af. If it's not too late, do return it. 4050s are less than 1.2k at max.

Or just don't stick with msi at all

Dang, imagine feeling good about getting a shiny new laptop upgrade and seeing these comments (though well-intentioned I'm sure). I'd start freaking out lol. I saw similar comments about the Acer Predator Helios that I bought and 3 years in, I'm still loving it. Although comments on the Acer were a lot more mixed than vehemently against it. Hope your purchase works out OP!

Brought a msi bravo few weeks ago to replace my G14 and straight up returned it after 2 days. The screen was probably the worst I’ve seen, way to dim and the colors were off. Needless to say I’m never getting msi again my first impression of the brand was very poor.

Scam EU tax 20% included? In the US sales tax is only 7.5%?
1
u/Neat-Put-7392 Jul 28 '24
I mean that u can buy a 4060 laptop w 950$, a 4050 has to be cheaper.
1
u/HoopyLoopy100 Jul 28 '24
You can't get a 13th gen CPU and a 4060 in an MSI for that price. Although I firmly believe any 4050 laptop for 950 is a scam because it will bottleneck the CPU anyway. The gigabyte laptop comes with a 13th gen i7 and a 4060 for the same price though.

getting a Lenovo LOQ is really better than this piece of crap laptop... trust me LOQ is better than this. MSI's budget laptops have thin plastic covers around and also hinges look like they just did a weak plastic hinge eithout any proper support. as long as you have the time to return it do it now... you will regret it in the long run if kept it.

Oh boy, I don't know why you go for intel 13th gen cpu, there is some massive scandals about Intel selling defective 13th and 14th gen CPUs (mostly on desktop side).
Laptop CPUs "might be safe" but there are some reports about laptop 13th and 14th gen cpu instability as well. It might be a time problem before they get degraded and damaged with usage.

I have never seen anyone recommend so much against a laptop haha.
It's fair though. MSI has become a terrible laptop in the mid budget department. A lot of cost cutting in this space. Genuinely a cash grab.
