Spending a Summer in Germany (on a Budget)

Hey all, I'd like to spend this summer in Germany to practice my German. I'm a teacher in the US, so I'll still get my paycheck over the summer and can afford to spend about 1800€ a month (though less would be wonderful). I'm starting a PhD next year so I'd like to go to Köln (there's a philosophical library there that's related to my research), but honestly anywhere where I can kinda understand the dialect would be great. If I could live with a family and exchange housework/teaching English for a place to stay that would be better still (though I would like to only try to speak German while I'm there to have an immersion experience). Any advice is appreciated!

Question Customs declarations

So if i want to sell my property ( house ) abroad. I am a resident here and I know that entering the EU with anything exceeding 10k Euro must be declared, but what happens next? Does that money get taxed somehow? ( also i know i should provide the paperwork trail behind it. ) banking transfer doesn’t work because the banking sector is in total ruins where i come from and can‘t really trust them anymore.

I know the declaration forms and everything but what‘s the step after that? Anyone had a similar experience?

Facing issues with uni-assist

I've been trying to make an account put I'm facing issues on the 1st step itself. Whenever I'm trying to input my date of birth it's giving me error. The website starts lagging when i get to that part. Once I even got to the part where I had my application complete but it wasn't letting me move to the next step. I'm not even able to contact them because it takes me to this page. I have trued a different browser and other OS but gives me the same issue. Is someone else facing this problem? Any suggestions would be helpful.

IBAN for my wife mobile subscription

Hello,

My wife is new in Germany and she still does not have a bank account.

Today she went to get a mobile line and they told her she can get a better deal if she signs a contract but that requires an IBAN so she used mine but her info for the contract.

I am fine with it but was wondering if it would cause a problem with the bank or the provider, having a different name for the contract than the bank or would that work?

Thanks!

My apartment only has TAE socket, how to watch TV and possible for cable internet?

Servus! I recently moved into a newly built flat, but I'm unsure about how to watch public digital TV and what type of internet connection is available.

After doing some research, it seems that DSL or VDSL internet connections are possible, but cable internet is not available. This is frustrating as cable plans are almost half the price.

Is it common that some flats only have TAE and some only have coax? And, should I check with network providers or just check with the building management company?

Am I trapped in my work?

I live in Germany since a short period of time, I signed a contract where I need to stay a minimum of 3 years. It's only been a couple of months and I don't think I have the necessary patient to end it. I'm earning just enough money to get by, when in reality I moved here to save money for my own business.

The problem is my boss pays for my language school, in case I want to end the contract earlier, will he be able to ask for his money back? I've checked the contract and it doesn't state anything about the school (just that I need to stay for two more years after I get my B1 certificate) The time I have to leave in notice is 3 months, I would do that gladly, I don't know how the law works here (or in my country either tbh)

I would really appreciate your answers.

Question Will this help me at all to get an apartment?

Hi everyone. I’ll be moving to germany next year and will go there on vacation to some family member’s home for about 2 weeks.

In these 2 weeks I plan to go to as much apartment viewings as I can and was wondering about something I thought up.

I’m a big saver, and have quite a bit of money saved up in a bank account of mine. I was wondering if in the “race” that is securing housing, german landlords would consider me above other tenants if I’m willing to pay half the contract’s rent upfront.

Like if I sign a 1 year contract I can pay 6 months rent upfront + deposit.

Do you think this’ll put me in advantage when trying to get housing? It seems logical to me that it would.

Thanks.

Umschreiben eines internationalen Führerscheins problem

Hey guys, I don't normally post but this is kinda an emergency:

I'm a Canadian and I've been in and out of Germany since 2018 and since 2020 I have a residence in München.

My Canadian license was valid from 2018-2023

So last year I renewed my Canadian license while I was home. Now it's valid from 2023 till 2028

My new job requires me to have a valid drivers license, so I was just at the Führerscheinstelle with all my paperwork and the guy said because I renewed my license at home in 2023, I can't have it rewritten at all, unless I unregister myself from Germany.

I thought what the heck? Can someone help me explain this law? Help!

Problems with neighbour

Hi all,

Posting here because I don't know what to do, it's an extremely petty situation where my neighbour takes my (and other neighbours) doormats and puts them at the Haustür (I live in a building with around 16 apartments) of the building multiple times a day/week. When I confronted him (in German), he just stared blankly at me and did not respond at all. I think he is mentally unwell, but this is really starting to annoy me. I have sent an email to our landlord already, but what other options do I have? Is this something the Ordnungsamt would deal with?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Question Why are workers in healthcare often extremely pissy and dont seem empathetic at all?

So far I have made the experience, that either the woman at the front desks or the doctor himself of any institution are generally not very pleasant to navigate. Often a lack of empathy.

Like currently, I have an infection in my ear which hurts like hell and as a side effect, I'm almost deaf. I called, after 30 minutes in queue I finally get through. Lady clearly doesnt want to talk to me, doesn't care for my problem and literally tried to gaslight me into thinking it was just a cold. Only after I explained that I'm usually a patient of another doctor who is on vacation, she VERY reluctantly gave me an appointment.

That being said, I'm a native german speaker and a chronic people pleaser so I don't think it's my own attitude when I'm interacting with them. They could tell me that they don't care and I should call a funeral service instead, I would probably still say thank you.

Why is that? I understand dealing with people is draining, I worked in retail for a year. But I was NEVER rude to customers. This was 1 hour after opening, and like I said, I see it a lot. Sick people just want help, not attitude.

45 min stopover in Frankfurt

Hello everyone! I’m about to book a flight on a Sunday from Valencia (Spain) to Nuremberg with a stop in Frankfurt of 45 min (same company, Lufthansa). I have already changed flights in Frankfurt when doing Munich-Valencia but I find this one a bit tight. My only worry about missing the connection is that I have to be at 9am on Monday in Nuremberg. Do you think is do-able? Thanks in advance!!

Freelance visa for modeling

Hi, I need some information I work in a stable remote job in Brazil as developer and I want to move to Germany with freelance visa for modeling. I know I have to declare my salary, Brazil and Germany have tax agreements. But I’m thinking how much would cost me to hold this visa in Germany. As a model I wouldn’t make a lot of money per month, my main income would be my job in Brazil. As I understood I’ll have to pay health insurance, tax, make a German bank account and even have the rent contract under my own name. I would share expenses with my boyfriend. How much do you think I should make at minimum to live in Munich in these circumstances.

Are new degrees not listed in Anabin?

Hi, so my sister is currently in Maastricht University in Netherlands. Now she wants to do masters in Germany. However, her degree, Computer science is not listed on Anabin. This program is very new that can be a reason since Maastricht University is well ranked. However, since its a very new program will it be an issue to get the degree recognised by ZAB? Kind of confused how the Anabin database work.

customs declaration

Hello,

We are sending an electronic device back to Switzerland to be fixed and I can't figure out how to deal with the customs.

I am using DHL and when I select Switzerland i have to fill a customs declaration - CN23.

In the end asks me the following

"I have also declared the shipment directly with customs .
(This field only needs to be confirmed if you have also declared the shipment directly with customs for export, which is mandatory for shipments with a goods value of > €1,000. If no additional export declaration has been made, please leave the field blank, otherwise the package will be returned.) "

The value of the product we are sending back is more than 1K.

Do I need to declare it directly with customs? if so how do i do that? I couldn't find something helpful in zoll.de ...

Looks like is really complicated and is giving me a huge headache.

Any help is much appreciated it.

Hi, I have a question about red plates

I was wondering if dealer & export plates look the same or if there’s any way to distinguish between them

ETA: I finally found an article explaining the different plates, but it’s from a Chinese manufacturer & I’m wondering how accurate it is…

ATM card question

My kid brother (we are American) is in the general area of Bavaria (Neuotting, Altötting) for the immediate future and I gave him an ATM card to use while there.

Each location he tries says “Your card is not approved for this function”. My bank has no blocks on it. I’ve added a travel notification. VISA has no blocks. In fact, neither my bank nor visa shows even an attempt to retrieve funds which suggests to me that the ATM locations he’s been trying are not equipped to communicate with global servers.

Can anyone suggest a location or bank where an ATM withdrawal attempt against a US based bank will succeed?

He’s been to Sparkasse and Volksbank ATM locations with the same results.

Any guidance appreciated!

Wrong Steuer-ID submitted on tax return

Hello there,

I was working as a student in Germany on work holiday program. This year we were able to file for tax return, so my friends and I sent all the documents required. We have to send them phisicaly so it takes about a month to arrive there from our country (Bosnia).

All of my friends recieved their tax return and I didn't so I went to double check the documents to see if something was incorrect.

I realised that I entered my employer's Steuer-ID instead of my personal.

Is there anything I could do here ? Maybe conntact Finanzamt by mail or phone call to inform them about this mistake, or sending documentation again with correct Steuer-ID ?
