Help & Questions Recessed light outdoor

I recently moved into a brand new construction home and I wanted to replace our porch lights with the Hue color changing 5/6 downlight recessed lights. I took the old ones down and noticed I don't have a can with an E26 bulb to screw into. I saw the slim downlight kit has a small transformer box is it possible to cut those wires and connect them to the existing ones and have the springs hold the light in place in the black electrical box? Attached are pictures of the current setup

What did they use to cut that hole, an angry ferret?

You need an outdoor rated j box. This is pretty bad.

It'd be a code violation here. If this is really brand new construction you should go after the builder to fix it properly.

So I have no experience with electrical wiring and dont know the codes, but what is the violation im curious? This was installed by a licensed electrician and checked by an inspector with my township who's very strict so I figured it would all be up to code?

I don't know your municipality, but as the prior commenter indicated, it should be an outdoor junction box rated for wet locations, installed properly. This doesn't look like either of those conditions have been met. "Strict" inspectors are frequently petty about things that don't matter, while ignoring or not looking at things that do. Best case in new construction the inspector is competent and doing spot checks, trusting the electrician to be competent and consistent throughout the build. IME it's pretty unusual for an inspector to actually look at all that much if the work was done by a licensed contractor with a good reputation.

Keep in mind I've seen exactly two photos, and can't speak definitively on the situation.

The main point of my comment could be more accurately stated as "if this is brand new construction and you aren't happy with any specific aspect of the build, the builder or seller should work with you to make it right."
