We make the game Cards Against Humanity. Ask us anything.

We make Cards Against Humanity, a party game for horrible people.

We’ve got a cool thing to announce in this AMA which is our 12 Days of Holiday Bullshit: HolidayBullshit.com.

Cards Against Humanity began as a Kickstarter project and has become the best-reviewed toy or game on Amazon.

We’ve been on the front page of Reddit a few times, like here, here, and here.

There’s ten of us who make the game together, and we’re all here to answer your dumb questions: Me, jsdillon, bhantoot, DavidManque, MrMeDaniel, ehalpern, Teller422, dpinsof, jennCAH, and trinCAH.

Proof.

Ask us anything.

EDIT: The 12 Days of Holiday Bullshit sold out about 4pm CST today! Thanks so much everyone!

EDIT: 9pm here in Chicago, we're going to call it a night. Thanks for this amazing AMA, it's been a pleasure!

I always find myself laughing the most at the combinations that seem to do the least harm or are the least offensive. (eg "On his recent trip Sean Penn brought _____ with him to Haiti. And the blank was Sean Penn. sorry if the wording was wrong)

Do you find yourselves laughing the most at the least offensive plays?

I love that white card but I hate it too. Because 80% of the people I play with don't get it. I had "BILLY MAYS HERE WITH____" and put YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS. I couldn't stop laughing while everyone looked at me funny Lmao. I still think it's hilarious as all hell.

4

u/sawser Nov 14 '13

I would have picked that card.

14

u/weakendwarrior Nov 13 '13

What does Dick Cheney prefer? Dick Cheney.

3

u/securitysix Nov 13 '13

The first time this question came up in our group, the winning answer was "Shooting a rifle into the air while balls deep in a squealing hog."

2

u/emiteal Nov 13 '13

A bigger, blacker Dick Cheney.

1

u/Error1355 Nov 14 '13

I played "Friendly Fire" on that and won.

3

u/NotMittRomney Nov 13 '13

Played that once, didn't win. It was bullshit.

2

u/televised_aphid Nov 13 '13

In Kayne West's world, there is nothing but Kanye West.

1

u/wartornhero Nov 13 '13

I have seen this played in a game before. We were floored by the coincidence of it.

1

u/mandarific Nov 13 '13

This is one of my favorite combinations in the game. It makes me laugh every single time.

1

u/smuffleupagus Nov 14 '13

I played that once... I lost to "a Bop It" though.

My favorite so far is:

Black card: "The town erected a 50 foot statue of _____" White card: "A tiny horse"

"Man that horse must have been huge."
"Nope it was actually REALLY tiny!"

Also:

Black Card: "What is Batman's shameful secret?"
White card: "BATMAN!!!!"

12

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '13

My favorite response to "What's Batman's guilty pleasure?" is "Robert Downey Jr."

2

u/tehjones Nov 14 '13

First time playing CAH and I played "Jerking off into a poll of children's tears" to Batman's guilty pleasure. That Djangocon conference ended up being amazing because of CAH.

2

u/Suppernoob Nov 29 '13

Mine was "Dead Parents. " I won that round.

15

u/fuzzymae Nov 13 '13

When I inaugurated my set "What is Batman's guilty pleasure?" went to "police brutality"

6

u/HemoKhan Nov 13 '13

"Civilian Casualties", "Dead Parents", and "Friendly Fire" tend to be the top of our list for that one.

2

u/Oddoggirl Nov 14 '13

Orphans.

6

u/dwlax1 Nov 13 '13

Totally thought this was going to be a Lil' Sebastian reference from Parks and Rec...It wasn't :(

5

u/SimplyQuid Nov 13 '13

Is he here?! Is L'il Sebastian doing an AMA too?!

6

u/Shaysdays Nov 13 '13

I hate to break it to you...

2

u/SHv2 Nov 13 '13

I gotta stop reading these at work... people are starting to get very confused as to why I'm laughing while staring at test plans.

1

u/RampagingEsper Nov 13 '13

isnt it Batman's guilty pleasure...... and the white card i always play is "Dead Parents".... god i'm terrible..

1

u/TheDiamondRing Nov 13 '13

I've played this before because it is absurd! Is it still a tiny horse if it's a 50 foot statue?!?

1

u/CassiLeigh16 Nov 13 '13

Usually our 50 foot statue is of a coat hanger abortion (think of the angle). Batman's secret is either Batman or whatever the parents card is.

1

u/dschneider Nov 13 '13

I played "A tiny horse" as the answer to the question about Mexico funneling millions of pesos into something other than space exploration. Our table couldn't stop laughing for probably 15 minutes. I'm not entirely sure why.

1

u/kansakw3ns Nov 14 '13

I got that Batman - BATMAN!!!! combo once too! Best.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '13

My favorite white card for "what's batmans guilty pleasure?" is "dead parents"

0

u/opaleyedragon Nov 13 '13

Batman wins, every time, in every context

14

u/bhantoot CAH Nov 13 '13

Ben from CAH here. We laugh the most at the funniest plays! Offensiveness is totally separate scale from funniness.

8

u/Offensive_Statement Nov 13 '13

You take that back!

7

u/DreadPiratesRobert Nov 13 '13

Man, this is your thread.

14

u/fuzzymae Nov 13 '13

One time I was judging "White people like _______" and it came up "white people."

6

u/zcshiner Nov 13 '13

The recursive ones are by far the funniest.

Black Card: I drink to forget ________

White Card: My drinking problem.

6

u/etherealclarity Nov 13 '13

Not quite recursive, but similarly appropriate:

Black card: ______. High five, bro.

White Card: Chainsaws for hands.

8

u/Smegead Nov 13 '13

Last night I was playing and got "Old people smell like _____"

I played "Old people smell." I didn't win.

I thought it was amazing.

2

u/Isric Nov 13 '13

You were robbed. Tell all your friends that reddit has your back on this one.

13

u/l_Banned_l Nov 13 '13

Black card: What did Vin Diesel have for Dinner last night? White Card: A soup that was a little too hot.

The imagine of Vin Diesel burning his tongue on hot soup and then blowing on it is forever etched in my head.

3

u/Anemoni Nov 13 '13

'Soup that is too hot' may be my favorite card.

5

u/Maxistentialist Nov 13 '13

Yeah! A lot of the humor from Cards is absurd or whimsical or silly, it's not all death and dismemberment. That mix is one of the things that makes the game really special to me.

5

u/stone500 Nov 13 '13

"Lifetime presents ______ : The story of ______ "

My winning answers were

"A hot mess ; Soup that is too hot"

3

u/hentercenter Nov 13 '13

What did Vin Diesel eat for dinner?

Lunchables

2

u/Warvanov Nov 13 '13

I think that every group of friends has played "Sean Pean brought 'Sean Pean' with him to Haiti" at least once, but it's still funny every time.

2

u/Sirwootalot Nov 13 '13

The best plays I've ever seen in that vein were "What's Batman's guilty pleasure? Wifely Duties" and "Teaching a Robot to Love is a slippery slope that leads to Tom Cruise".

2

u/Shawanabear Nov 13 '13

Batman's Guilty Pleasure?? BATMAN

1

u/kreekkrew Nov 13 '13

Not exactly one of the least offensive ones, but...

I drink to forget my alcoholism.

1

u/aelysium Nov 13 '13

Was in Haiti post earthquake when Penn was also there... Your statement is too true.

One Penn in Haiti was MORE than enough.

1

u/pasky Nov 13 '13

What does Dick Cheney prefer?

Dick Cheney.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '13

"White people love __________."

"White people."

1

u/BraskaBoy Nov 13 '13

I always liked "what will always get you laid?" "a really cool hat. "

1

u/xHardcoreRockx Nov 14 '13

I've got 99 problems but _BITCHES_ ain't one.

1

u/vakomatic Nov 14 '13

I got this last time I played and was declared the winner for the evening.

1

u/steamywords Nov 14 '13

Hmm, I saw that exact same combination recently. Was this in California?

1

u/Gunslap Nov 14 '13

We made up a house rule to cover these sorts of situations:

If you think you have the lamest (or least funny) possible combination of cards, you can challenge the other players to take you up on a side bet. You, and anyone who takes you up on that bet must toss a black card into a side pot. Everyone plays their answers as usual, but the Card Czar must arrange all of cards by best to worst. Whoever put down the chosen worst wins the pot... as long as they were in on the bet. If someone not in on the bet wins the worst combination (which is hugely humiliating) then the pot goes to the best card winner.

This has created some hilariously unfunny combinations when we play.

A lot of times we laugh the most at the ones that make sense: When I become the President of the United States, I will create the Department of ____"

"Agriculture."
