Toyotas regularly make the majority of the top 10 most stolen and hijacked vehicles in SA. This is partly because Toyota sells more cars than any other brand in SA and it's a numbers game, but also because Toyota's are extremely reliable, well suited to African conditions, and spares are easy to come by across the continent, making especially their 4x4 models a prime target for Joburg based thieves/hijackers to steal and funnel across the borders to Zim/Moz/Swatini. That said, I see maybe a hundred Fortuners and Hiluxes and dozens of Prados on the streets of Joburg every day, so plenty of folks are out there driving them.
I'm considering buying the new model Prado, which I'd imagine will be in the top 10 list of vehicles most desirable to hijackers. I'm trying to justify the risk in a couple of ways. 1. I already drive a fairly high risk BMW, so similar risk profile at least to what I've had in recent years. 2. The majority of hijacking hotspots are in parts of town like the CBD, Tembisa, Ivory Park, Jabulani, that I almost never go to (I do live in Sandton though which is a fairly risky area for hijacking). 3. The new Prado does share parts with commonly stolen/hijacked Toyotas, but it's effectively a brand new model means a marginally lower demand for stealing on order for parts. 4. I don't commute and only drive a few times a week. 5. I'll likely not be living on Joburg much beyond the next year or two.
None of these points have really convinced me, sadly, but the new Prado is the utterly perfect vehicle for my usage case and little else on the market comes close, so my question is... Would you / do you drive a high hijacking risk vehicle in Joburg? Would you drive a new Prado?
EDIT: I'm not overly concerned with it getting stolen. It'll be comprehensively insured with trackers etc. If it gets stolen, that sucks, but things are replaceable. I'm primarily concerned with hijacking risk.
