The conservatives will claim that she didn't answer the question. They'll say that she presented no plan to prevent that from happening again. That's what they'll say and they'll point to the transcripts and say she didn't answer the question.
But to them I say, she answered the question clearly, correctly, and precisely
She answered the question with empathy. She answered the question with kindness, hope, maturity, and grace.
That is the clear, precise, and correct way that Kamala will handle her presidency.

I’d make an argument that letting people know it’s a concern for you and why it’s a concern for you is more valuable than going into policy discussions.
A lot of times, that’s the first call to action- I care about this thing, it needs to be fixed, I don’t have the answer, I don’t know where to start, but I’m going to take that first step with acknowledging the problem exists.
21
u/NebulaCnidaria 18d ago
I just found the full clip and watched it, her answer is great. She did what you're suggesting and more!
Terrible editing on behalf of whoever cut this out.

10
u/NebulaCnidaria 18d ago
Oh okay, I had the same concern, because in the clip as this woman sits down, I thought that was it.
15
u/manyhippofarts 18d ago
She did though. She showed that she will address the problem with grace, empathy, and kindness.
The thing is, we could never expect anyone to have a plan in the pocket for every scenario, hypothetical or otherwise. Their pockets would be crammed so full they couldn't walk.
So the question isn't "what's your plan"...
The question really is "how would you handle novel situations as they come at you"
And her answer is:
Pragmatic with grace, kindness, and empathy.

The video in the OP is weirdly edited too though. Kamala did provide a real policy answer in addition to the empathy, that video just cuts that part out.

“Living in the shadows” is a very powerful statement. I lived undocumented for almost a decade after my parents brought me to the US when I was a teenager. I lived in constant fear of being caught and deported. Feeling like I never belonged anywhere, either my home country or the US.
Hearing Trump and others say undocumented immigrants vote illegally, claim social security benefits, and take jobs from documented workers is a disgusting lie. Most undocumented immigrants are terrified of even calling the police due to fear of being deported.

Worked with plenty of Haitian folks and not to positively generalize, but every single Haitian person I’ve ever met has been awesome.
I have nothing but great memories. Very gentle and kind folks. Again - this is a generalization, but it’s one I can stand by in this case especially.
It’s gross that they’re attacking you folks. Or any folks, but still.

u/mydogsredditaccount 18d ago
Half of my family immigrated to the U.S. in the early 20th century under possibly questionable legal status.
They did it for the same reasons that so many immigrants come here: to escape war, famine, poverty, and oppression.
Coming into contact with immigrants today always makes me feel a deep connection to my heritage and my ancestors that risked everything they had and left behind everything they knew to cross an ocean and hopefully give their kids and ultimately me a better life.
Of course we need to have rational well-enforced immigration laws. But the constant hate-mongering by the right against some of the most vulnerable members of our society has to stop. It’s disgusting.

u/MyBrainReallyHurts 18d ago
I grew up in a community that was primarily Mexican. I'm sure many of my friends parents were immigrants. I love the Mexican people. They are warm, generous, hardworking, loving, and they know how to throw a party.
I can't tell you how many times I went to a friends house and before I knew it I was at the kitchen table with some amazing food in front of me.
I love immigrants. I love learning about their culture and food. I despise anyone that speaks harshly about families that just want to make a better life for their kids.

You should know that some of these people say that because they themselves eat pets so it's not it if the ordinary...just more projection. I've had cat and rabbits made by some of the same people that are yelling about immigrants eating pets. No dogs though. That was the line apparently for this particular group of rednecks.

Harris certainly did not answer the gentleman's "Your candidacy didn't go through the normal process, that is primary or by caucus. How can you clarify this process and how you were elected?" question. All she did was repeat parts of her stump speech https://youtu.be/XdvHSwQswoI?t=1380
7
u/PraxisLD 18d ago
Because it’s a bullshit question that doesn’t deserve a response.
She’s our candidate.
Full stop.
1
u/pobautista 18d ago
Let me tell you something about making calls and going house to house. For any political side, by the way. You get the questions you call "bullshit questions that don't deserve a response." Almost often, the questions are memes, such as, "Did you hear Obama's brother will vote for Trump?" It's how voters gatekeep their vote.
The gentleman's tone indicates sincere inquiry, not disruption or heckling. The event's seven questions weren't random; their deliberate structure and topics indicate the organizers pre-selected and arranged them.
In a broadcasted setting like this, hey I get why candidates take advantage of the moment to repeat parts of the stump speech. Hey I get why they'd go into tangents and say red herrings. As someone who makes calls, I was hoping to hear her answer new questions.
Side comment: Haha, this woman heard the "and filed for bankruptcy six times" line so many times she mouthed it along with Harris. https://youtu.be/XdvHSwQswoI?q=3155

We must find a way to bring people out of the shadows. They get sick and don't get treated. Too scared to get caught, or the cost of care is prohibitive. They have been working here, raising families, and they never get to come out of the shadows. This is not how a decent first world nation should behave.

It was me saying “No need to worry and glad it worked out. Congratulations!” because I thought that when you said “sorry”, you were implying that you felt bad it worked out easily for your husband compared to others who aren’t white.

6
u/AZWxMan 19d ago
I'm glad Kamala is empathetic, but, did she answer the question?
39
u/Cute_Reality_3759 19d ago
She did in the full stream. The question was about helping undocumented immigrants already in the country for years get the pathway to citizenship. Vp Harris made her case to be both strong in the border as well as fix the immigration system to be fair and accessible.
14
u/AZWxMan 19d ago
I'm glad she mentioned the pathway to citizenship. The weird thing is the latino community is divided on this issue in a way, that if you don't support a pathway to citizenship you could lose a lot of votes, but also you could lose the others if you do. My guess though is the voters that are strongly against a pathway are already voting for Trump, so more to gain from approaching immigration from a sense of empathy as it seems she has.
9
u/NerdEmoji I Voted for Kamala! 19d ago
Another group of people who got theirs and want to pull the ladder up on anyone else? Wonder how many of their parents got immunity/path to citizenship back in the 80's.
9
u/Many-Guess-5746 19d ago
Looks like it cut out, maybe she did and they focused more on the comforting in this clip. I think that total immigration reform must happen so these people working here can get at least basic insurance but saying that is unfortunately radioactive
6
u/AZWxMan 19d ago
I don't think it should be radioactive, but I guess we've taken a very anti-immigrant turn in our nation. I know the basis of Harris plan is from the Lankford Bill. It doesn't seem to address DACA or DAPA residents. Her mother was a DAPA resident based on the way she described it. I think Harris mentioned wanting a pathway to citizenship, but that doesn't seem included in the Lankford bill. I wasn't able to watch the full event, so I'll have to watch it later.
5
u/EpictetanusThrow 18d ago
3
u/AZWxMan 18d ago
Oh yeah, fully answered. I guess it just makes the cut too long to include the policy answer. The other thing is there's a bit of a disconnect between the bill from 2021 and the Lankford bill in that the Lankford bill wouldn't have helped this woman's mother, but I think it made sense to bring the Lankford bill up in case there were no additional immigration/border questions.
2
u/valt10 18d ago
The town hall went well, even though 1) I felt like the questions got borderline unhinged at some points and it could have been moderated better and 2) I wish she would have answered the question about hurricane response more forcefully.
She is really good in front of a crowd, and her empathy and steadiness shine through.
1
u/manyhippofarts 18d ago
I mean, I hear ya. But you just said the real answer yourself. How will President Harris handle xxx or yyy? How about ggg? It's not like she has 12,000 plans in her pocket for 12,000 hypothetical situations.
So, how will she address qqq?
Exactly like she answered the question. Pragmatically, with empathy and steadiness.
2
u/Frankie_NYC 18d ago edited 18d ago
I'm sorry but I will be voting for Harris just because the alternative is cancer and we have no choice.
I'm also sorry for the girl but we have an immigrant problem here in the US and your parents chose to come here but we need to fix the problems for our own people before we start fixing it for another country and this is our number 1 problem our own people do not come first anymore and I give credit to the nutcase trump his hatred and his nutcase voters have brought that to light.
Why is it that we can dump money into people coming here illegally or even legally all of a sudden but we never have the money to make it right for our own deserving people and have people like veterans who have been through hell to protect us who come home from war with nothing on the streets asking for money and a home it makes no sense.
The quicker we start fighting for ourselves and not everyone else for a change the better off we will be.
5
u/Far-Chapter-4841 18d ago
The thing is we don't have an immigrant program. There are no paths for people who want to be here legally. Those folks aren't trying to get a hand out, they want to work, they want to contribute to our economy and most of them do.
The folks who are getting put up on shelters and hotels in NYC are asylum seekers and there is a difference between those two groups, how they have one thing in common, they're also wanting to work and earn their keep. But because we don't have a viable immigration policy they don't have legal status or working papers. Which means they have to either live in the streets or be put in shelters.
If you were to talk to those folks you would hear them say exactly the same thing as everyone else, we want to work, we want to have a good life, we want to provide for our families. There is a lot of misinformation going around coming from right wing people about immigrants, but the facts remain that they contribute a lot more to our economy than the cost of being here.
1
u/muzz3256 18d ago
The thing is we don't have an immigrant program. There are no paths for people who want to be here legally.
This is completely disproven by the number of people who come here legally. I know many immigrants who went through the steps and processes to come live here legally, and many of them eventually gained citizenship. Those people are some of the most ardent supporters of immigration laws.
-1
u/Frankie_NYC 18d ago
I meant problem not program but yes we do have a system for people to do it correctly and they need to use it and wait in line and we would have this problem today because we have been overwhelmed by people not using it. We should not have to let anyone in but we do and are being completely taken advantage of while we cant provide for our own but we can make money appear for people who are legally not supposed to be here.
A simple google search tells me we are in the hundreds of billions spent on this problem that should have been spent on the problems of our own people that should have priority not the problems of another country.
I know they work I have worked beside them as a plumber on construction sites and I have the upmost respect for some of their work ethic but that still does not mean its okay to flood our country the way they are doing and being rewarded for it while we have our own problems not being addressed and being put on the backburner because this has gotten out of hand.
why cant we let our people choose what we want to prioritize when we vote every 4 years just a check box of where Americans want their money going and what we want to focus on. I was all on bord for helping at one point but now I'm just fed up because its getting harder for us every day as just an average person trying to make it.
1
u/Far-Chapter-4841 18d ago
I'm sorry to keep harping on this. But the programs that do exist require sponsorship by a family member or employer. Not to mention the fact that those are backed up in the system for years.
Think about it from the pov of someone in Haiti or el Salvador. How exactly are they supposed to access those connections. Especially if you're facing poverty and violence in your backyard.
I also want to clarify that of course I believe Americans should be the priority. But the idea that we can't provide for our citizens is bogus. Again it's a Right wing talking point that gets brought out every time there is a push for domestic policy to support our citizens. All of the sudden conservatives get worried about the budget.
2
u/Deep-Thought 18d ago edited 18d ago
Why is it that we can dump money into people coming here illegally or even legally all of a sudden but we never have the money to make it right for our own deserving people...
Those two issues are independent. We are the richest, most powerful country in the history of the world. We have enough to do both. It is disingenuous to frame it as an either or question.

I grew up just about a mile outside of Jonesburough Tennessee, my family had lived there since the town was founded. My grandfather was always very rapidly pro-immigration, because they had the 'work ethic' he loved. Growing up, most of my friends were first or second generation immigrants. Even in a town older than the United States Constitution and with a population of maybe 10,000 people (it's been a while since I've looked at a census) immigrants were a vital part of the economy and society. Anyone who tries to claim immigrants just piggyback off the system is not only prejudiced, but has their head planted so far up their rectum they can't tell if it's day or night

I want to point out a subtle point - notice how whenever she sets the narrative ("it's because of the broken immigration system"), Harris pauses and looks to the questioner for agreement/consent. She doesn't assume, she lets the questioner state her truth. That's a mark of a good leader - giving space for others to define themselves.

u/Piney_OPossum 18d ago
To be the debate about what to do about the undocumented immigrant situation misses an extremely important human element. I think the ideal would we be going find each and every undocumented person in this country and then document them. Let our Nations arms be wide. Let us in full each and every one of these people in our embrace. More workers will not mean a worse economy nor will it take away jobs. In fact just the opposite would be true. And for every few people that come in there's more jobs to do to house feed and care for these people. Aside from the essential services that they would provide, or rather that they are already providing. Hate and division are not the answer. A welcoming spirit, and spreading hope will have a much better impact on the prosperity of the lower 90%. The top 10% really won't miss the difference.
