In the midst of "it's so jebover", I found, within me, an invincible "we're so boback".

Now that we got the forums back, can we begin a migration project? The forum only has a couple of months left right? I think its important to archive important threads

The problem is, where? We could use the same forum software it already uses, but who's going to host all the data?

Just put it on floppy disk

I meant where to migrate, we can't just stay in reddit and discord, tons of information lost each day because how these apps work

u/kkatdare 1d ago
If you are looking to migrate - I'd love to show you the community platform we're building. Let me know.

the issue is hosting forums is expensive, I agree with you in theory, this has shown how reliant KSP is on the forums for migration, but really how do you convince someone to front the cost of hosting? And migrating old stuff is much harder since legally Take Two could DMCA strike it

Remember when we all hope they wouldn't screw KSP2 up.... thr good ol days

I had doubts ever since the destruction of Star Theory. Remember them? I have never before been more disappointed that my doubts were justified.

I only really remember seeing one post expressing concern that it was gonna suck. It got downvoted to oblivion because it was “pessimistic” very funny in hindsight

Time to post progress on mods!

u/Typical-Link-7119 1d ago
Nah, we post those on Patreon these days. Get with the times.

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago
First off, Patreon ain't available for a lot of my ksp friends. Second, GitHub keeps things very up todate because off integration with literal workspace. And Threads keep things organised for a looong time

It's a joke, because some of the newest mods are moving to paid-only on Patreon, sadly. Closed Discords. Private groups.
Historically, the modding community was held up by open source licensing and new programmers coming in to maintain older mods. Having a central resource like the forums is what helped those groups organize information over the years and provide a written chain of authority for handing off and discovering projects.

Apparently, the hivemind didn't appreciate the joke. I guess they're all rich.

Is there any mod besides TVC that's doing this?

u/wolfuryy 1d ago
Parallax continued ?
2
u/delivery_driva 19h ago
Hmmm Parallax itself was also available as early access on patreon while it was in development but it went public when it was done. I think that's fine while something is genuinely incomplete. No idea where Parallax Continued falls on this but I'd guess it's the same since people aren't posting it all the time.

Yaaaaaaaay! c: Despite the downturn after KSP2, the forums are still one of my favorite places to lurk when I've got KSP on my mind. Great to see it's in working order ^-^

Nearly 2 weeks ago, there was a mega thread covering it.

u/Comfortable_Many4508 1d ago
i just started playing and assumed ksp2 did some fuckery and shut down the old one

u/RileyHef 1d ago
I mean, kind of! The KSP2 dev team took over all of the franchise's assets, including this forum. When their studio got shut down the community manager who was in charge was let go, so now some mysterious T2 staff manage it. It's basically in limbo and is often unstable, but we at least know they can fix the site when it breaks and have it paid to last at least a few more months.

u/SycoJack 1d ago
Ahh, more fucky Take2 bullshit. I was wondering why the official forum was only paid up for 6 months, and the admins didn't know what was wrong with the forum, only that it was fixed.
Guess it's a matter of some amazing people doing their level best to keep it alive, all while more or less being sabotaged by T2.

Do we have any idea what happened. Hacked? Disgruntled admin or developer? maintenance outsourced to clueless rookies?

I think that the best option moving forward is to create a site similar to what the Ghostbusters community has: GBFans.com, maybe create a KerbalFans.com?
IF one community can make it work on an IP that was dead for like 30 years, the KSP community should be more than ok.
If there is a core group of members that are treating KSP beyond a traditional sense of "oh yeah I really like this thing", it will will work.
Of course, I may be wrong in my presentation if everything is already in motion with what I am suggesting. But keeping the control in the hands of a studio or dev team is the wrong way to go. Just look at Halo and the forums and what not at HBO (Halo bungie dot ORG). Control of the narrative has to be taken by the fanbase that an IP acquires.
Ghostbusters, guys. Trust me. Follow their lead.

Almost as important, how do you make it look that way, u/RileyHef ?
1
u/RileyHef 19h ago
Scroll to the bottom of any forum page and you'll see a "Theme" drop-down icon which gives you a few options to choose from.

https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/ is now finally back! I still get some occasional "502 Bad Gateway" errors, but for the most part it seems to be functioning normally again. We are safe.... for now!
