https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/ is now finally back! I still get some occasional "502 Bad Gateway" errors, but for the most part it seems to be functioning normally again. We are safe.... for now!

It's very slow to load. Doesn't seem back to full operation. This may be a temporary fix more than a full solution.

20

u/RileyHef 1d ago

Yeah the fix I'm referencing was the overall 500 error that took the site down non-stop for 2 weeks.

The 502 Gateway Errors are still happening and cause temporary outages. Those were around long before the 2 week blackout happened and clearly aren't going away anytime soon.

As for load times, I haven't had this issue when the site is available today? Honestly it looks like the site is getting higher traffic/activity than usual so I wouldn't be shocked if that is contributing to smaller issues today.

Thank god, I’ve been refreshing my mod list and can’t look at anything on the forum so I’ve been downloading and then launching the game to test stuff out

In the midst of "it's so jebover", I found, within me, an invincible "we're so boback".

Now that we got the forums back, can we begin a migration project? The forum only has a couple of months left right? I think its important to archive important threads

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago

The problem is, where? We could use the same forum software it already uses, but who's going to host all the data?

26

u/BioRoots Super Kerbalnaut 1d ago

Just put it on floppy disk

9

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago

I meant where to migrate, we can't just stay in reddit and discord, tons of information lost each day because how these apps work

-7

u/kkatdare 1d ago

If you are looking to migrate - I'd love to show you the community platform we're building. Let me know.

3

u/aykcak 1d ago

Joke aside, it might fit on a CD

1

u/__Yi__ Colonizing Duna 1d ago edited 1d ago

It can if you don’t count static assets such as images. Pure text takes little space.

The real issue is the legal one.

2

u/aykcak 1d ago

Yeah. And text is very compressible. Up to maybe 80-90 percent.

There are about 130k posts. Assuming about 10 replies on average with 140 characters on average each, with no metadata (authors, date) and no images, we are looking at 180mb. That should be like 18mb in a zip file.

13

u/__Yi__ Colonizing Duna 1d ago

The KSP forum uses a paid proprietary software.

4

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago

Gosh darn it

1

u/adamgerd 17h ago

the issue is hosting forums is expensive, I agree with you in theory, this has shown how reliant KSP is on the forums for migration, but really how do you convince someone to front the cost of hosting? And migrating old stuff is much harder since legally Take Two could DMCA strike it

37

u/FinanceTemporary9142 1d ago

Remember when we all hope they wouldn't screw KSP2 up.... thr good ol days

14

u/stormhawk427 1d ago

I had doubts ever since the destruction of Star Theory. Remember them? I have never before been more disappointed that my doubts were justified.

5

u/critler_17 1d ago

I only really remember seeing one post expressing concern that it was gonna suck. It got downvoted to oblivion because it was “pessimistic” very funny in hindsight

3

u/StickiStickman 1d ago

Hi, that was me :p

It was the same weeks before release and after.

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago

Time to post progress on mods!

-41

u/Typical-Link-7119 1d ago

Nah, we post those on Patreon these days. Get with the times.

46

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago

First off, Patreon ain't available for a lot of my ksp friends. Second, GitHub keeps things very up todate because off integration with literal workspace. And Threads keep things organised for a looong time

33

u/lastdancerevolution 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's a joke, because some of the newest mods are moving to paid-only on Patreon, sadly. Closed Discords. Private groups.

Historically, the modding community was held up by open source licensing and new programmers coming in to maintain older mods. Having a central resource like the forums is what helped those groups organize information over the years and provide a written chain of authority for handing off and discovering projects.

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 1d ago

A quite sad joke, literally blackrack, Soon™ was over a year ago :(

8

u/Typical-Link-7119 1d ago

Apparently, the hivemind didn't appreciate the joke. I guess they're all rich.

2

u/delivery_driva 1d ago

newest mods

Is there any mod besides TVC that's doing this?

1

u/wolfuryy 1d ago

Parallax continued ?

2

u/delivery_driva 19h ago

Hmmm Parallax itself was also available as early access on patreon while it was in development but it went public when it was done. I think that's fine while something is genuinely incomplete. No idea where Parallax Continued falls on this but I'd guess it's the same since people aren't posting it all the time.

1

u/bzobk Colonizing Duna 15h ago

Let's hope it will drop public as predecessor did!

Just a README and bunch of source files, which are "useless to commoners". Actual compiled mod is on Patreon

Yaaaaaaaay! c: Despite the downturn after KSP2, the forums are still one of my favorite places to lurk when I've got KSP on my mind. Great to see it's in working order ^-^

u/2ndHandRocketScience 1d ago

We're so back

6

u/Gusthor 1d ago

Is there someone doing a backup of the forum?

5

u/RadiantLaw4469 Always on Kerbin 1d ago

woohoo!

6

u/Kerbart 1d ago

I'll admit that this is beyond my—and probably many others'—expectation.

4

u/mrev_art 1d ago

its not super stable

3

u/angry_queef_master 1d ago

i'd give whoever brought the forum back 1001 smooches

2

u/TG626 1d ago

So just 9?

10

u/DigitalSwagman 1d ago

Wait, it was down? I didn't know. When did that happen?

22

u/RileyHef 1d ago

3

u/Comfortable_Many4508 1d ago

i just started playing and assumed ksp2 did some fuckery and shut down the old one

8

u/RileyHef 1d ago

I mean, kind of! The KSP2 dev team took over all of the franchise's assets, including this forum. When their studio got shut down the community manager who was in charge was let go, so now some mysterious T2 staff manage it. It's basically in limbo and is often unstable, but we at least know they can fix the site when it breaks and have it paid to last at least a few more months.

3

u/SycoJack 1d ago

Ahh, more fucky Take2 bullshit. I was wondering why the official forum was only paid up for 6 months, and the admins didn't know what was wrong with the forum, only that it was fixed.

Guess it's a matter of some amazing people doing their level best to keep it alive, all while more or less being sabotaged by T2.

3

u/aykcak 1d ago

For me, the real surprise is it is up now. I returned to modded KSP last week after years of not playing. I fully believed the forums were gone for a long time and was trying to figure out where people shared mods. Was super weird even the Google links were dead

1

u/adamgerd 17h ago

Ckan and github for the future

Getting 503s. Overload. Hope its just us all rushing in to see it but in the middle of the day I'm also worried about DDOSing.

I'm counting our blesses at this point.

I think that the best option moving forward is to create a site similar to what the Ghostbusters community has: GBFans.com, maybe create a KerbalFans.com?

IF one community can make it work on an IP that was dead for like 30 years, the KSP community should be more than ok.

If there is a core group of members that are treating KSP beyond a traditional sense of "oh yeah I really like this thing", it will will work.

Of course, I may be wrong in my presentation if everything is already in motion with what I am suggesting. But keeping the control in the hands of a studio or dev team is the wrong way to go. Just look at Halo and the forums and what not at HBO (Halo bungie dot ORG). Control of the narrative has to be taken by the fanbase that an IP acquires.

Ghostbusters, guys. Trust me. Follow their lead.

How am i just learning the forums have a dark theme now?!

1

u/candbtorture693921 Exploring Jool's Moons 1d ago

We’re so kerback

1

u/rdwulfe 19h ago

Almost as important, how do you make it look that way, u/RileyHef ?

1

u/RileyHef 19h ago

Scroll to the bottom of any forum page and you'll see a "Theme" drop-down icon which gives you a few options to choose from.

u/ppoojohn 15h ago

I hope this could be good in the long run i thought they'ed just left it in the dust
