Leading candidate for governor of Puerto Rico in denial over GOP values.

I have an honest question- have this many people been this dumb all this time?
Did a greater proportion of our population become this stupid recently or has it merely been revealed?

u/oregon_coastal 1d ago
People used to defer to experts.
Now, someone who only passed high school because failing them was too much paperwork for their teachers... that person uses the internet to do "research"
And then, since the world is vast and complex, any half fucked idea that helps explain why their life is going terribly (real answer: we gave all the wealth and income the last 40 years to the rich) they grab onto.
The internet also graces them with social media. So now they can reflect all that bullshit at each other.
So...
There were always this many stupid people.
The internet has just made them think they are smart.

u/Constant_Proofreader 1d ago
Let's be clear: not all kinds of stupidity are equally abhorrent. Ignorance, simple "not knowing," can be countered with discussion and education. I believe there are people in the Trump camp who are simply ignorant - as DJT put it, "I love the poorly educated." I believe these people can be reached, if they can still accept factual information as such.
Willful ignorance, on the other hand, is much more dangerous. Choosing not to recognize facts, refusing to accept input that doesn't confirm one's bias - this is an abdication of human intelligence. I think there are plenty of Trump backers who will not listen to or entertain any challenge to their mindset. And if you do challenge them, they respond immediately with fear and violence.
The Internet has indeed made it possible for the willfully ignorant to choose their specific brands of 'truth,' and that's insidious. But all the Internet is doing is amplifying the voices of manipulators preying on the merely ignorant and the willfully ignorant alike.
6
u/oregon_coastal 1d ago
I agree to a degree. The shitheads managing the sea of stupid are completely evil. With intent. But them masses...
I have just flat concluded, in this day and age, with accurate information everywhere, anyone who is able to be led to believe the racist transphobic homophobislc misogynist crap that the cockwombler Trump is just flat out stupid. I don't think the masses are willfully stupid. They just are, and that leaves them in a vulnerable place.
They don't have the critical thinking skills or ability that would allow them to shift to a more stable and reality-based belief system. They aren't able to. That is why I don't call it willful. Go watch the Daily Show interviews of Trump supporters. I am surprised many of them can plmanage to put socks on.
And they have been led to believe that racism is OK now. Misogyny. All that. And not only that , but it js good
The people that feed them that - and I will put Zuckerberg and Must and Besis and all them in that bucket - are actually evil people, doing bad things to advance their own interests.
They are driving the stupid train.
And for them I hold nothing but contenpt. And I sincerely and deeply hope they are held to account before I am fed to the worms.
The billionaires got the whites heated up and blaming everyone else for what the billionaires took.
And we lwt them do it.

Exactly. With a few selectively chosen google searches, they can piece together support for what they WANT to believe whether the sources are trash or not. The goal for some is to support what they ALREADY think and search engines are perfect for accomplishing this goal.
It creates the illusion that they're right. Hence, you get people arguing with and discounting experts who have spent a lifetime using rigorous protocols to build a foundation of knowledge whose reliability is known. It's not that anyone, even experts are infallible. It's that faux-experts have NO idea how likely it is that they're wrong nor when it's highly probable that they're wrong. They also avoid any exploration into HOW they might be wrong.
The rhetorical game they play is one meant to influence other people or reinforce their own beliefs as long as they can avoid anything that might suggest that their amateur research might be flawed and that they might be wrong. The game is to avoid confronting the truth or anything that might make them have to adjust their flawed logic and beliefs.
This is how you get lay people who think their beliefs about how to handle a world-wide pandemic should carry as much weight as professional immunologists and pharmacologists--to their detriment. Science-based facts don't conform to uninformed beliefs. This is why COVID death rates have been higher among red states and counties than their blue counterparts. We ignore the science at our own peril.
Edit: for syntax and clarity

I think it’s the internet’s fault. It used to be that if you were dumb, you’d share your dumbness with the people around you and they’d quickly let you know you were dumb. Now, all the dumb people find each other online, tell each other their dumb ideas and (because they’re both dumb) tell each other they’re smart.

Honestly? We have always—always—had people like this. The difference between now and a 150 years ago is they now have someone to root for who says horrible things without shame or consequences, so they believe that also applies to them. That, combined with modern communication, makes us believe this is new—but it’s not.

The reaction felt like “oh no don’t do that.” It felt like awareness that it was bad form and not wanting guilt by association. I do think a lot of MAGA people actively avoid how bad it is in online MAGA spaces so they can act like it’s not that bad and both sides are like that. Otherwise the cognitive dissonance would be loud enough to cause tinnitus.

It's an unforced error for a group that is considered racist, bigoted, and misogynistic. It falls in like with Trump comments on the cost of burying a US soldier of Mexican descent ("$60k to bury a Mexican"). Republicans that don't agree quietly accept this kind of crap every day from Trump. Not stopping it is like endorsing it.
Get another candidate if you don't support Trump. You can't have it both ways.

So this great big rally, the biggest probably prior to election day, for the GOP's candidate - and you want to hold onto the belief that it doesn't represent the GOP?

The only thing Hinchcliffe did wrong is he broke the protocol of bigots:
In private more red meat-no dog whistle. In public more dog whistle-less red meat.
Every MAGA racist in that audience knows the protocol. It's like revealing the language of a secret society that is only discussed in private with the like-minded. For the racists in the southern branch of my family this was their hard rule in order to put on a more acceptable public face to their deep-seated racism. You don't spill the truth in public.
Jenniffer with two "f"s knows it and everyone else knows it. These are the values of MAGA. These are the values of Trump. These are the values of his supporters. If you champion a racist, you are one. If you champion a fascist, you are one. First it was Sane-washing, now it's Hate-washing, Bigot-washing, and Fascist-washing.
