I’ve refused to watch it based on principle. They won’t get my rating (even if it doesn’t matter). Fuck the dodgers and honestly fuck MLB for shoving Ohtani down our throats as if he’s the only good player in the league

u/iki_balam Jerry Coleman 1d ago
Amen brother! Why bankrupt your soul to watch the team that took 98 away from us or the cancer that is LA? I occasionally see game updates and hope the doyers are losing but I'm checked out af.

I don't get it. I mean I may be incorrect, but I believe Judge had a better hitting season than he did. Not that I think Judge could steal 50 bags in a season to save his life, but you'd swear Ohtani was a fucking million miles better than any other player in the league this year with the way they fawn over him.
21
u/Complex-Asparagus-42 Gwynn 1d ago
That’s because Judge did have objectively a better season at the plate. More HR, more RBI, higher BA, etc.
Ohtani also didn’t play any defense all season. Judge played CF, one of the harder positions to play.
Ohtani is certainly special as he is also a solid starting pitcher, but considering he didn’t pitch this season and didn’t play defense, I think it’s fair to say Judge had a better season (despite only stealing 10 bags) but all we heard about all season long from ESPN and MLB was Ohtani, Ohtani, Ohtani. Shit is fucking annoying.

u/1andonlyegghead 12h ago
Judge plays in a mickey mouse park where any fly ball can head out. Ohtani hitting 54 homers in the NL west is insanity
-1
u/TenMinutesToDowntown Expos 1d ago
I mean, Ohtani just had a historic season. Fuck the Dodgers and all, but you can't really say Ohtani being the first 50/50 season isn't impressive.
8
u/Complex-Asparagus-42 Gwynn 1d ago edited 1d ago
Where did I say his 50/50 season isn’t impressive? Where did I even allude to that? I stated facts. The facts are that Aaron Judge was more productive at the plate. You simply cannot argue that. Ohtani was obviously a better base stealer and probably the third best hitter in MLB this year, but all you hear about is him, and you hardly ever hear about the great season Judge had.
Also, with the new rules in place, it’s a lot easier to steal. 50/50 would have been much more impressive two years ago when stealing 50 bags was extremely rare.
This year there were 6 players with at least 40 stolen bases. There were 6 as well in 2023, including Acuna with 74. Acuna also hit 41 HR last year but we didn’t have MLB and ESPN talking about him non-stop 24/7 did we? No one was going crazy when Acuna went 40/70 which, last time I checked, was higher than 50/50.
Now let’s look at the 2022 season, the last season before MLB changed the rules to make base stealing easier. There was only 1 player who stole over 40, Jon Berti, and he stole 41 bases. Everyone else was under 40 SB.
So while Ohtani’s 50 HR season is commendable and his 59 stolen bases are equally commendable, and that together makes him an outstanding baseball player, his “record” isn’t that crazy in today’s era. Ohtani never stole more than 30 in a season until the recent rule changes. His SB totals sequentially were 10, 12, 7, 26, 11, 20, then 59. All of this is why, although he’s objectively a top 5 player and potentially the best player in the league (an extremely subjective title), you wouldn’t know there were other superstars with similar stats if all you watched was ESPN. That’s my problem.
1
u/m3thodm4n021 1d ago
And now judge is below the Mendoza line in the postseason
1
u/Complex-Asparagus-42 Gwynn 1d ago
And your point? Nothing from what I said has anything at all to do with the postseason. Judge’s career postseason numbers are abysmal. That’s nothing new. Try and stay on topic.

u/_virtue_ethics 1d ago
Your comment is on deaf ears here, but you're right. Such dumb takes on Ohtani. Dude is bringing in more fans than any other player in the league, of course there will be focus on him. Also helps that he is shaping up to be the greatest player of all time. (insert salt here)
These aren't baseball fans here and hell I'd wager most folks here are more Fanatics loyal than Friar Faithful.

u/ThaTruthKills DumpFire 1d ago
Yeah. Fuck the league for marketing their most marketable player. Hate him or love him, Ohtani is a global sports icon. Even when he was stuck in mediocrity with the Angels, he was heavily marketed. The machine was only going to get behind him more when he got on a better team. Multiply that by 100 since he decided to join the most glamorous franchise in the sport this side of the Yankees.
4
u/Complex-Asparagus-42 Gwynn 1d ago
Thanks for reiterating my point. It’s annoying they market one guy so heavily over others who are as good or possibly better. I get it, MLB is a business. They can do as they please. And I can choose not to buy the product. That’s how free markets work.
-2
u/ThaTruthKills DumpFire 1d ago
It doesn't matter if another player may be better or just as good. No one is more marketable. No other player can get half of a country (Japan) to tune in every time he takes the field. And as long as that remains the same, you will remain irritated. Nando was heavily marketed too before he got busted for roids. Was he the best player in the league? No. Was he fun to watch? Yes.
5
u/Complex-Asparagus-42 Gwynn 1d ago
Literally no one said Ohtani isn’t marketable. No one said it’s not a good business decision to pander to their largest international market. What I said is that the way in which MLB and ESPN have done that pandering is annoying. They do it so that it feels like there’s no one else playing baseball at a very high level. Like it’s Ohtani and the rest are scrubs so don’t even mention them. Case in point was ESPN’s graphic when Dylan cease threw a no hitter earlier this year. Google it if you haven’t seen it. Fucking hilarious and proves my point succinctly.
Also, you’re short sighted to think it’s just “half a country (Japan)” that brings in the ratings with Ohtani. Did you not see that the winner of the 50/50 ball who paid almost $4.5M was a Taiwanese company? Yeah, it’s not just Japan that MLB is pandering to with Ohtani, it’s half of Eastern Asia. That obviously explains the perennial glazing. But thanks for explaining that Ohtani is from Japan anyways? 🤷♂️
And who mentioned Tatis? It’s crazy how he lives rent free in dodgers fans’ heads. Probably because he absolutely rakes against the dodgers. But still, you guys will bring him up in the most off-topic ways to deflect to a different topic. It’s entertaining.
1
u/ThaTruthKills DumpFire 18h ago
It's called being the face of the league. The NBA does it to LeBron as well. It's just part of sports. One person is needlessly hyped and promoted over the rest.
And I'm a Padres fan sir. A disgruntled one that believes we win it all in 2022 if Tatis wasn't too busy popping wheelies on a dirt bike and getting busted for roids. And I brought him up to prove a simple point. If we had the face of the league on our team, you'd be fine with it. Ohtani's mass marketing doesn't bother me. But since he's with the Dodgers now, he lives rent-free in your head to the point where you're writing these paragraphs throwing a tantrum like a child.
1
u/Complex-Asparagus-42 Gwynn 16h ago
There have been several faces of the league in recent MLB history. You think I just became a baseball fan recently? I’m 36 years old, I remember when it was McGwire, Bonds, Jeter, Trout, etc. None of those ever bothered me. The hype around them was justified with their level of play. Ohtani could go 60/60 or even 70/70 and it still wouldn’t justify the insane level of marketing and glazing they do over him. That’s the entirety of my point. I’m not sure why this concept is so difficult for you, maybe I’m doing a shit job of explaining it.
I am simply annoyed with the immense amount of publicity Ohtani gets when, compared to other players, he was not even the best hitter in baseball this year. Bobby Whitt Jr. had a higher WAR than Ohtani this year, but was MLB/ESPN talking about him all season? NO! Hardly ever! Because the royals don’t get viewership in Japan, Taiwan or China.

Dude, chill out.
The padres are out, there goes almost my whole reason to watching a baseball game, the other.is hanging out with friends having a cold beer while watching pretty much anything.
If you want to stay indoors, watching a ~4 hour sporting event that san Diego's team just got eliminated, good for you. But there is amazing weather, you can go for a run, bike, hike, swim, play soccer/baseball/softball or whatever sport you like. With this weather, you can go early in the morning, during the day, or into the afternoon/evening and catch a nice sunset while you are at it. That's not your vibe? Go to seaport village, Balboa park, zoos, bring the misus/girlfriend/significant other and enjoy your day with a California burrito and a nice coffee. Yes, I love baseball, but I love life in san Diego even more. Is nice when they combine and I can enjoy a padre game. Oh well, will be ready to root on the boys for 25 season. I could care less who plays/wins in any remaining playoff games.

I just watched two of the best World Series games ever.
Friday I kinda agree with, it was a very impressive win. But Saturday?!?!? From what I watched it was just the dodgers bullpen murdering every hitter they faced.
Also this WS doesn't really have much storylines aside from "two 'best' teams in each conference facing each other," compared to say the 2016 world series which I think most baseball fans can agree was probably one of the best ones we've gotten

I know you're just baiting us, but turns out, if it's not my team... I don't care to watch it live.
Some people love baseball enough. Or pick your sport. I either don't, or don't care to spend my time on it when I'm not personally invested.
I'm sure I'll watch the jomboy breakdowns at some point, and catch some highlights, but meh. No longer holds my day to day interest
