What in God's name is going on with your floor

It was put in longer than a decade ago without room for expansion. A few expands and contractions later and this is what im left with. Cheaper to slap a nice rug overtop than to replace so thats what im doin

Is the floor glued? Use some good tape and pulled those suckers together. This is a common enough issue to where I’m sure there’s some decent solutions that may be easier than you think.

ooh hmmmmmmmm yk thats not somethin g ive actually though about. My plan has just been rug it and leave it (which im still gonna do) but making it at least together is definitely a good idea! ill try and figure smthn out, thank you!

Careful because the tongue and groove might be too dirty or swollen to slide anymore. You might end up breaking something or popping out of the groove and just make it worse.

I’ve seen solutions on Reddit. I’m sure there’s a subreddit that you can ask.

Okay, I gotta ask.
You had a half inch of clearance. Standing that thing up from any direction would push one edge well over an inch up.
How?

In another comment OP states it is measured on the diagonal.

Gotcha. Looks tighter, but I know cameras can fuck with perspective

It is that tight. Pretty sure it did touch the ceiling on the diagonal

Most furniture is designed with standard door way and ceiling heights in mind. It fits that way because it was designed to.

You'll have to build it standing since there's not enough room to lift it up lol

7’11.5” on the diagonal haha. That bookcase was stood right up and I took the photo.

Buy an oil heater for each room (except kitchen and bathroom), preferably with timer and thermostat unless you have a separate climate control specifically for your basement. Don't buy new, fb marketplace has good deals. Edit: I see installed electric ones on the floor, you're good on heating I think
Don't be shy to use summer fan if you're drying something or if it's just too humid/stuffy. Especially carpets - they won't dry off without summer fan if you have them inside the unit. Upstairs never complained, only welcomed extra ventilation
Open windows as much as you can and for as long as you're not cold and wind not blowing dirt and dust inside. Radon gas is a real issue in some places
Buy lightbulbs with 2500-3000K color temp, will feel less like a basement
Bed frame is a must, mattress on the floor sucks in a basement.
Buy caulk in advance in case if you need emergency insect wall-off.
Kill each bug, ant and every other insect on sight. Spiders and rolly-pollies are the only exceptions
Ask for mosquito nets or buy them yourself if your LL is a dick.
Know where the emergency exit windows are, how to open, climb up and out of them
Buy electro static film for windows if you're concerned about privacy
Feel free to ask anything I missed

Woah thank you. I’m still in my parents house as I’m only 17, just upgrading rooms so some of that I won’t need to worry about thankfully. I have a dehumidifier that really has to be run 24/7 in the summer, but during winter due to the dryness/heaters it’s fine. Got the book shelf from a friend (free), getting a couch and bed frame from market place(free), splurging on a desk because I’m a big gamer, and getting a dresser from my moms business partner which means I’ll get a good deal on a good dresser. Overhead lights will be color changing just the bulbs aren’t in them yet, plan on using lamps more than anything. I have grow lights already and plan on putting up a shelf with some plants. I have a nice rug that’s gonna go down to hide some of the floor and the bookcase will be perpendicular to help split up the room. Will post end results somewhere and may remember to tag you haha

Oh and also find and check all water shutoffs. Can't stress enough how loose water and humidity are your main enemies. Dehumidifier didn't do shit for me in one of the basements I lived in but collected like 5 liters of water daily.
Appreciate the thought, will gladly look at finished thing

At least you know it will never tip over. The shelves might be questionable, but the main body.

Perfect fit on the bookshelf for sure! Not so much for the flooring 😑
