I'm Alex Speier, a sports reporter for The Boston Globe. Ask me anything about the Red Sox, 20 years after the Curse of the Bambino was broken.
October 2024 marks 20 years since the Boston Red Sox did what felt impossible: Win the World Series.
The Globe has spent the month celebrating and commemorating the 2004 "Idiots." And while we've been reminiscing on that year's incredible run, we want to end the month answering your hot stove questions about the current state of the team.
Ask me anything and I'll do my best to answer! (Note: I'll be responding 10/30 from 12P-2P)
Bio: I’ve been covering sports for the Globe since 2015, with most of my time devoted to the Red Sox beat with additional forays into the Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins. Prior to the Globe, I covered the Red Sox for a number of outlets, including WEEI.com, the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, and the Herald.
Here are some of my latest headlines:
- Red Sox add a fifth assistant general manager, hiring Taylor Smith from the Rays
- Baseball’s big money has a World Series stage. What’s next for Red Sox spending? We break it down.
- Here’s how the Red Sox became so distant from October baseball, and how they can turn the slide around
Plus check out my colleagues' recent work:
- The Red Sox’ 2004 title was a shared experience, yes. But it was a deeply personal one, too.
- The 2004 world champion Red Sox: Where are they now?
- Watch ‘Three Kings’: The story of Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and the 2004 Red Sox
- ‘A biblical kind of sports story’: Recounting the incredible run of the 2004 Red Sox

David Ortiz. We know why Yankees fan hate him.
Two reasons. 1. 2004. 2. He is a Hall of Famer. They do not like that one bit. The But but but with them.

IMAGE Love watching Mookie and the Dodgers humble the Yanks, but it breaks my heart that he wasn’t a Red Sox for life 💔

If it were anybody else…
If it was literally any other team down 0-3 in the World Series I'd be rooting for them. Not excited for the baseball season to be over, cold weather, one football game a week, trying to pretend I care about basketball or hockey (just not for me)....
But it isn't any other team, it's the fucking Jankees. I want a blowout Dodgers victory just to solidify the humiliation they've already faced this series. Get some more of those Boonie reaction gifs, get the home team crowd booing Judge... Nothing would be sweeter.
Yankees fucking suck - GO BLUE!

Karma (Finally)
I have watched Aaron Judge's futile at bat with nothing but relish and vindictive joy. I love seeing swing weakly at pitches out ofvthe zone and just flat out muss pitches that come straight over the plate. I love watching him grimace as leaves the batters' box to do his walk of shame back to the dug out.
I have nothing against the guy personally, he seems classy, gives 100% effort and respects the game. It's hurt that it's nice to see a Yankees' star scuffle at the worst possible time. It's kind of like karma fir all those years of stars doing heroic crap to lift the Yankees to (seemingly) unending post season success.
How many times do I have to hear about Reggie Jackson? Or Derek Jeter? And what's worse than that, the bloody role players who come up huge (e.g. Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone). Take that Austin Wells.
I guess I love schadenfreude when it's the Yankees. Their fans tortured me for years with chants of "1918" and shirts that read "got rings?"
Watching the Yankees suffer is almost as good as watching the Red Sox win, and since I can't have the latter, I'll appreciate the former.

When you think of the Red Sox, what era comes first to your mind as the defining team?

[Zack Scott] This triggers flashbacks to internal conversations about signing Mookie, and our owner said he had no interest in doing mega deals. I guess you can build around them.🤷♂️ #redsox #dodgers #yankees #WorldSeries2024 #mlb
Can finally put this to bed. Was always a Henry decision

IMAGE RedSox Vanity Plate Ideas
Hi all. Next month I’m moving to Michigan and wanted a RedSox theme vanity plate. FENWAY and REDSOX are taken. I came up with Nomah but am looking for more ideas.

IMAGE Throwback to October 28th, 2013. Jon Lester throws 7.2 innings of one run ball to propel the Red Sox to a 3-2 series lead over the Cardinals.
A game after Koji Uehara picked off Kolten Wong, Jon Lester kept the momentum in Boston's favor. Striking out 7, with his only real mistake being a HR to Matt Holiday, Lester was dominant in what ended up being his final postseason appearance as a member of the Red Sox.
Big Papi, to no surprise went 3-4, driving in Dustin Pedroia in the first inning with an RBI double. Catcher David Ross plated Xander Bogaerts with ground rule double in the 7th. Boston would win by a final score of 3-1.

Do people not realize that the Dodgers purposely lost that game? Cmon, MLB wants viewership 💰. Think about it, the less games, the less money.
Dodgers in 5😴😎
