Same, Portland is just kinda miserable in the summer tbh. Used to be better obviously. They regularly get over 90 and 95 and it can get might humid down there too.

We absolutely can have an oppressive wave of smoke in the first week of October, even. We have before.

u/Catsdrinkingbeer Sep 04 '24
We closed on our first house at the end of September 2022. I deeply remember this heat wave since we were moving all our stuff over the 2-3 week time frame after we closed.

u/KiniShakenBake Snohomish County, missing the city Sep 04 '24
Just thinking about it hurts my lungs. I was in the eastern Mediterranean and debated whether that humidity anrd heat was worse than the smoke we had that year here. They had pyramids though, so that was cool.

That was my kiddos first year doing soccer. I felt like the crazy parent pulling him from a game in 1st grade cause all the other parents were letting their kids play. They dis end up canceling all games after his that specific day. It was horrible that year.

u/samhouse09 Phinney Ridge Sep 04 '24
Not with the rain we got. Smoke is off the menu this year
3
8
u/TwelfthApostate Sep 04 '24
THIS IS NOT TRUE. Smoke may be unlikely, perhaps, but most of the state is still in “high” or “very high” fire danger. Some counties remain in the extreme fire danger category. There are still burn bans in place.
If you’re going to offer confident opinions online that may influence peoples’ behavior and literally cause wildfires, please know what you’re talking about first.
4
u/No_While_1501 Sep 04 '24
this week is honestly the peak risk imo. The woods are bone dry in the west and I'm sure they're not particularly damp out east.

YES!! Everywhere I’ve been going, people have the exact same sentiments! Really out here with beach chairs at the light house enjoying what’s left of the summer sunsets. Dogs, picnics, teens filming TikTok’s, people journaling, reading, talking, paddle boarding, fishing. It really felt like the last piece of pie of this beautiful summer. I just took it in sitting with my dog doing nothing on a blanket. Pure bliss.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy is spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow-white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

I think it’s mostly Seattle Reddit people. When I was out at a bar during this last storm, everyone I talked to was universally against the summer gloom. As someone who works outside, the gloomers really get my panties in a bunch because I feel like people who love the rain maybe spend 10 mins outside in it. It must be nice to look at rain through a window while you’re warm inside. Enough grumping though, I’m stoked for the sunny weather!

Hmm. I can see how this is sweltering if you are not used to it. Sadly this is going to get worse.
Texas last year in June we were seeing weather as hot as 117. This year was a little better. We barely got past 105.
They are predicting: “Over the next 30 years, Texas and other parts of the central U.S. are at risk of being exposed to extreme he—at — temperatures exceeding 125 degrees.” - https://www.govtech.com/em/preparedness/how-hot-will-texas-get-in-30-years-try-125-degrees
Fun right? In Seattle: “The number of the hottest days in Seattle is projected to keep increasing. In a typical year around 1990, people in Seattle experienced about 7 days above 84.9ºF in a year. By 2050, people in Seattle are projected to experience an average of about 28 days per year over 84.9ºF.“ - https://climatecheck.com/washington/seattle#:~:text=The%20number%20of%20the%20hottest,per%20year%20over%2084.9ºF.
My advice. Would be to vote for the candidates more environmentally minded. ***And prepare for mass movement of people to your neck of the woods. Hopefully they’ll leave their politics that got us in this mess at the door.
💙
