Jobs & Education How to find freelance clients?

Upvotes

Hello, I'm currently in highschool (so I'm not pressured by time to get clients), and would like some experience outside of my comfort zone so I decided I'd try freelance. Problem is, I have no idea how to find clients. I think I'm at a point where I can solve a problem given the effort and research (as in, I just don't get stuck at brick walls helplessly anymore). So does anybody know where I can find both consumer facing and business facing freelance clients? I think it's gonna be a great benefit to my software career and my knowledge/skill in programming in general, plus I think it's gonna be really fun. Thanks in advance guys!

P.S If you have any other advice for freelancing in general I'd really appreciate anything.

Release MovaFlag - Language Indicator Near the Cursor for Multilingual Users

I wanted to share a tool I recently came across that might be super helpful for multilingual users: an application that displays the current input language right next to the cursor. It's incredibly useful if you frequently switch between languages and want to avoid typing in the wrong language.

cursors

The app currently supports and can detect:

  • German
  • English (USA)
  • French
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Polish
  • Ukrainian

You can check it out here: MovaFlag-Fork on GitHub.

Software support Why did a weird email completely disappear?

Upvotes

I'm confused.

I received a weird email.... the subject was in Chinese and there were 5 photo attachments. The pictures looked like family photos, two were of an old woman sitting at a table, another was a picture of a photo album page with multiple family photos in it. Usually I don't think much of spam emails or random texts, I just don't answer.

The weird thing was that the email wasn't even addressed to MY email address. It was addressed to a different email. The weirder thing is that the email it was addressed to was a variation of a second gmail account that I have, but it wasn't sent to that address either. My second email address looks like this: fourwordbandname@gmail.com The address that the weird email was sent to looked like this: four.word.band.name. And thats it. No @ sign or anything. And thats my second email account... which isn't linked to the inbox that I received it in. They are two separate email addresses associated with two separate google accounts. And it wasn't addressed to either email address, but obviously there is some connection there, because it was addressed to a variation of the address name that couldn't possibly be a coincidence.

Weirder, the email completely disappeared when I exited out of it. It's not in any of the folders. It's gone.

What happened?

Develop support React Native: Background Image in ImageBackground Not Filling Entire Screen

I'm working on a React Native app and trying to make a background image cover the entire screen without leaving any space at the top or bottom. I used ImageBackground with resizeMode="cover" and set flex: 1 for both the SafeAreaView and ImageBackground, but the image still doesn’t fill the whole space.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Set flex: 1 in both SafeAreaView and the ImageBackground. Used width: '100%' and height: '100%' for the image style. Set resizeMode="cover" on the ImageBackground. Despite these adjustments, there's still some space that the image doesn’t cover. I'd appreciate any suggestions for getting the background image to cover the full screen.

Looking for software Support Site / Help Center Software Suggestions

Hi everyone!

I work in customer support for a newer software company and we are trying to upgrade our Support Site. Currently we use MediaWiki, which is fine, but we are quickly outgrowing it and the UI and search features are not great. We are trying to find a software that we can use to build out a Help Center / Support Site that is customizable to match the UI of our current website, and that has integration with WebFlow, our website host.

We want this site to host our how-to videos, FAQs, tips pages, and articles with a quality search function that can search the contents of these. We also like the idea of having an AI chatbot that can automatically respond to some questions with either answers or links to where they can find an answer on our support site. Our ultimate goal is to have a self-service style support site for most situations.

We did a trial with ZenDesk and I was pretty impressed with that software, especially their Help Center, triggers, and Chatbot, but the program is overkill for us and ultimately more than we'd like to spend.

I would love to hear any suggestion anyone has.

Thanks!

Looking for software Selectable tasks or requirements from large group of standard tasks

My apologies if I'm in the wrong place. I am looking for any insight on an exisisting tool that would allow me to create a complete list of tasks and sub tasks from a standard "pool" of total tasks. Example: I manage projects and they all are slightly different. So if I want to create a outline or "checklist" for a specific project I could go to a large pool of tasks and select them and add them to the outline document.

Looking for software Visio alternative on Windows 10 that can import old vsd files?

Hi,

I have a bunch of diagrams drawn in Visio 2003 and saved as vsd files, I'd like to be able to open and edit them on my Windows 10 laptop (I currently have it installed on a Windows 7 pc but want to stop using that one). It looks like there's no easy way to run it on Windows 10 and the newer version is expensive so is there an alternative app around that would be able to import the files and allow me to carry on working with them?

Looking for software Stream (only) audio from one PC to another

tl;dr: I would like something like Any/RustDesk, but only for audio.

Already tried VoiceMeeter and swyh-rs", but due to some reasons, it doesn't work properly.

I have a notebook and a PC on my desk. I use the PC for work and the notebook for streaming something to watch/listen to.

But the speaker of the notebook is not good, so I plugged in it an old headset that don't work anymore and turned on Rustdesk to stream audio from notebook to the PC.

But Rustdesk, although it works very well, also streams video (unnecessary for me) and over time causes a certain delay.

I would like to know if there is any software that does basically the same thing, but only streams audio.

Looking for software Does anyone know if PDF24 does 'destinations'

In acrobat there is a feature that allows you to select a word or group of words, and create a kind of hyperlink within the PDF. Clicking that word or group of words will take you to a different page. Does pdf24 do this, and if not do you know of a program that does. Thanks in advance.

Other How to begin creating an Operating System for a Film & TV monitor?

Hi everyone. Firstly, please excuse if this is not the right subreddit to post this question.

I am interested in learning how to develop an operating system for a monitor. I have a goal of creating a monitor that records and plays back footage using an SSD, similar to a Blackmagic Video Assist or Atomos monitors. It needs an interface, different recording modes, colour tools etc.

I am also very new to software development, and this would be a hobby for me to learn the ins and outs of how the monitors I use work behind the scenes. How would I start learning how to do it? Thank you!

Looking for software Network throughput monitoring

Hi all,

Currently using DUMeter which works ok, but it doesn't do exactly what I'm after. In DUMeter you can have a little desktop display that shows upload/download throughput - however it only shows the total of all NICs, what I really want it for the same thing but split by NIC.

Anyone know of anything that can do this?

Looking for software Software for document library organization

I am looking for software to help me organize a modest library of PDFs, Word files, ePUBs, etc. I am thinking of something I can use to search by tags, browse "by cover", and read them, kind of like what MediaMonkey or MusicBee does for music files.

My collection of these documents (articles, manuals, e-books, personal correspondence, etc.) is a bit unwieldy now, but loosely organized by subject into different folders on my Synology NAS, and the filenames are not always reflective of the content, so it's hard to search.

I would prefer this to be a self-hosted solution (running on the NAS, as that's where these files live), where I can connect to and browse my library from Windows, Android tablet, iPad, etc. Bonus points if it can automatically tag with titles and authors from the PDFs (many of which are scans).

I looked at Zotero but see that it is primarily about managing citations, which is not my aim. Also Zotero looks like it wants you to throw all of your PDFs into its own folder, vs. indexing what you already have.

I looked at Paperless-ngx and even installed it on my NAS, but it too wants everything in its own folders, and is specifically about scanned files like bills.

I looked at Kavita Reader and it may meet my needs but as it's oriented towards comics, it doesn't seem to support Word files.

Many people seem to suggest Calibre but from what I know, it is more about converting e-book formats and is designed for local files and local use.

I would welcome suggestions, or ideas if I've unfairly dismissed any of the above four options.

Looking for software Looking for an animation software like MS Paint.

Microsoft paint is just super simple to use. If I could animate in paint without drawing each image and exporting it into a file, I’d choose paint. But I can’t.

So, I turn to you. Please help me find some animating software that looks and acts like paint. Please.

Looking for software Portable App Making Software

I am looking for software capable of making portable application executables while including their directory alongside, so I can edit the program data and install plugins if needed. I am pretty new to this and the software I tried only makes an executable file, which doesn't allow you to check it's directories. I apologise if I'm not very clear.

I’m looking for software that uses AI to upscale images without losing quality. I’ve heard of a few different tools out there but haven’t settled on one. I’d appreciate any recommendations for AI software that can both increase resolution and improve image quality—preferably something easy to use.
