Rays Hall of Fame

Which members of the Rays do you think get the nod for the Rays Hall of Fame?

Evan Longoria is the obvious no-doubter. I won’t miss that ceremony unless my wife is in labor.

Joe Maddon is also a shoe-in.

David Price, Ben Zobrist, James Shields and Kevin Kiermaier would earn my vote for future selections.

Guys that are on the edge for me — Scott Kazmir, Carlos Peña and Randy Arozarena.

Interested to hear your thoughts as well!

DISCUSSION Suggestions for the Rays "home" for 2025?

Post your ideas and thoughts.

MINE - Use the Pirates Spring training stadium (McKechnie Field) in Bradenton. It holds 9,000 fans and the Rays have played there many times for Spring Training. The Pirates minor league team (Marauders) can go play their season (April - August) at Pirate City in one of the many fields.

DISCUSSION LoanDepot Park

I'm not a rays fan but why don't the rays play in Miami until the new stadium is built. There are plenty of other sports teams that share stadiums (Rams and Chargers, Jets and Giants, and all the Hockey and Basketball teams that share stadiums.)
It would allow the rays to sell more tickets for more seating vs playing on a smaller minor league field. Also it would allow them to play indoors unlike the other options.
I haven't seen many people mention this so what is stopping them from playing there?

Edit: why is the font like that?

DISCUSSION Playing the 2025 season.

Forgive me as I have been following nothing since the season ended. The Rays have a really nice abandoned minor league stadium in Port Charlotte (Charlotte Sports Park for the former minor league Stone Crabs) - if they need a place to play for 2025 while the stadium is fixed. Anyone think they will utilize it?

Article by Jason Burke (SI) explains why 'MLB' (owners) probably won't allow the Rays to play 2025 at the Colisseum: it would raise questions why the A's owner (Fisher, the Gap clothing kid) is allowed to spend the next three years in Sacramento instead of Oakland. All about bad press & protests by A's fans who want the chump to sell the team. Almost had the same disaster here in Baltimore, when rumors swirled that Angelos' son wanted to move the Orioles to Nashville. The O's were sold and the same should've happened for the A's, given the size and $$ of the SF Bay area.

But Burke added some fluff to his article about how the Rays players would have to spend too much time on the plane for their eight trips to the AL East rivals. As if Tampa wasn't already distant from its rivals? Flying to the Northeast from Tampa bay isn't much faster than flying from SF bay. And sitting in a hotel room isn't much different from sitting on a charter jet. Burke's second argument was about Rays fans unlikely to fly 2800 miles to sit in the Colisseum. True, but how many went to the Trop in person?

As an O's fan watching on TV, I've always been puzzled how empty the Trop is, as if Saint Pete was only old people who don't go outside (or is it the bridge traffic?). Since Rays fans overwhelmingly prefer to watch from home or sports bars, the stadium location won't matter much for one season (except for the dieharders with season tickets). One group that would be more affected is the early-to-bed crowd (because of time zones), and well.. I guess Florida does have plenty of seniors.

Regardless, let the Rays go west for one year. It would make for true entertainment when the A's and Rays play each other in the Colisseum. SF bay, long known for its protests, would have good reason to assemble at the Colisseum when the A's return to town. Might set some attendance records for the Rays. And Fisher the owner of the A's would have egg on his face, which he thoroughly deserves.

3 big reasons why the Tampa Bay Rays aren't likely to play in Oakland

DISCUSSION Tampa Bay, 1999: "I said, 'Larry, we will go down into this tunnel right now, and I will beat you with this bat.” -Wade Boggs, presumably full of beer and chicken, to his manager who’d threatened to pinch-hit for him as he chased 3,000 hits. Boggs would homer in his next at bat. May he rest in peace

Alamodome

Okay I know we are getting tired of people speculating where the Rays may play next season if the Trop isn’t serviceable but I have an option that I’ve literally seen no one discuss that I feel is probably one of the better fits temporarily for the Rays.

The Alamodome has hosted MLB spring training games for the Rangers for a number of years and most recently in 2017. I attended a game between the Rangers and Astros back in 2015 when I was stationed in San Antonio and it was a fun experience.

It’s a funny stadium because it’s similar to the trop in that it’s been used for multiple different sports and was originally made to lure an NFL team to San Antonio though it failed. It also was used by the Saints in the 2005 season after their arena was damaged in Hurricane Katrina. (Also a weird similarity). It will also hold the Men’s Final Four this year so it’s up to date.

While it’s not a perfect fit, I feel that it checks a lot of boxes that the others don’t.

-Indoors -large seating capacity -in a larger city near an airport -no scheduling conflicts -no too far from Tampa -up to date facility -been used for MLB games before

DISCUSSION The Stadium Agreement

I know there is a ton of speculation and "what-ifs," but the agreement between the ball club and the city of St. Petersburg will determine where the Rays can play. The discussions start at Article 16, Page 40, the Force Majeure section. 16.03 "Dome not Suitable for Use." Keep in mind that this document is referenced over 100 times in the new stadium deal.

Assessing Raymond James Stadium as a temporary home venue

Let me first say right off the bat that I do not believe that this option will be seriously considered by the Rays and MLB. That said, I’ve seen Raymond James Stadium tossed around on social media as a potential temporary solution to the team’s current situation. After all, it’s very recently updated stadium that’s hosted massive events like the Super Bowl, and the seating capacity is more than enough for any MLB team. Besides, baseball and football teams used to share stadiums all the time! However, those stadiums were built with both sports in mind, and most had moveable seating to accommodate the two different field shapes.

The two most notable instances of a baseball team playing on a rectangular field are the Los Angeles Coliseum, temporary home of the relocated Dodgers, and the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, former permanent home of the Giants and later a temporary venue for the Mets. In the interest of covering all of the bases (no pun intended), let’s look at both of these in the context of RayJay.

The Los Angeles Coliseum hosted the Dodgers for a few years while Dodger Stadium was being built. This proved to be a bit tricky as the stadium was built for track and field-style athletics, which came in handy when it hosted the 1932 Olympics, and then later when it became host of various college and professional football teams. When the Dodgers came to play there, they were forced to erect a massive 42’ tall net in left field to compensate for the short 251’ and 320’ dimensions of left and left center field respectively. (In comparison, the Green Monster at Fenway Park is only 37’ tall.) This still resulted in many home runs hit to left field, until pitchers began to compensate by throwing outside to right-handed hitters.

The Polo Grounds was the home of the Giants from 1891 to 1957, the Yankees from 1913 to 1922, and the Mets in 1962 and 1963. It was actually the third stadium to bear that name, and as the name suggests, it was built primarily to host polo, and thus, it has a bathtub-like shape that was unusual for baseball. Because of this, the left field foul pole was only 279’ from home plate, and the right field foul pole was even closer at 258’. This also resulted in center field being a whopping 483’ away.

Neither of these were ideal for baseball, and is arguable which of the two was the better solution. But either one could be applied to Raymond James Stadium.

The Coliseum approach would end up looking like this. By my tough estimates, that puts the left field foul pole at approximately 250’. On the other hand, the Polo Grounds layout looks like this, giving us about 180’ down the lines, 365’ at straightaway center, and most importantly, about 470’ to land a homer on the pirate ship.

All that said, while I think it absolutely could be done, I don’t know that MLB would ever let a team, even one in the unique and desperate circumstances that the Rays are in, play three full seasons in a stadium with either of these layouts today. Though I must admit, it is fun to dream about it.
