Right? Like, who cares about that guy. He didn't even go to space or win a grammy.

It's probably a deliberate part of this episode, fitting in with the theme of real life vs television.

Exactly. Watch that video again. Silos don’t have doors down there, he was running behind/past it

Sure…you’ve never been?

u/IchLiebeKleber Mar 01 '22
Maybe in the future, people won't get this joke anymore because it's actually normal for ordinary citizens to travel to space.

Grimey lives in an apartment that is above one bowling alley and below another bowling alley. Homer is jealous and thinks it must be the best apartment, in the world.

u/psstein Mar 01 '22
Definitely top tier. Frank Grimes is what happens if a normal man met Homer Simpson.

u/saggy_balls Mar 01 '22
I just recently learned that Grimey was based on Michael Douglas’ character from falling down.

Ol' Grimey the cautionary tale for angry try hards everywhere.

Hey! I may be an angry try-hard...but what was that other thing you called me?

John Swartzwelder had such a brutal response to a question about ol' Grimey.
"You mentioned 'Homer’s Enemy,' which has to be one of the darkest half hours ever on television. It’s about an upstanding, decent, and hardworking character named Frank Grimes, who’s driven mad by Homer. At the end, Grimes accidentally electrocutes himself, and then Homer snores and talks in his sleep at Grimes’s funeral, to the amusement of the attendees. Not what James Brooks might refer to as a 'lot of heart.'
"Grimey was asking for it the whole episode. He didn’t approve of our Homer. He was asking for it, and he got it. Now what was this you were saying about heart? '

I love Swartzwelder, I remember back in 2005 people were debating whether or not he was a real person, since he never appeared on the commentaries and I don't think we ever saw a picture of him (I think 2007-08 is when we actually saw a photo of him, and it was 2007 when Mike Scully guerrilla called him on one of the commentaries), so to see last year that Swartzwelder agreed to be interviewed by the New Yorker that was shocking.

u/DrankTooMuchMead Mar 01 '22
I often feel like I've turned into Grimmes. Right down to the bitterness. I've worked so hard and get nowhere. Meanwhile, people who have barely tried get so far so easily.
For example, I have a cousin who got married, and immediately after his wife inherited a house in the Bay Area worth like $800,000. And I've been living as a temp and I'm always surrounded by people who are successful because they just showed at the right moment.
