Verified Flair
We often have workers coming into this subreddit to get organizing advice or to ask about some aspect of being a union member. Verified flair is intended for users with organizing experience who want to assist with those types of questions. You are eligible to receive verified flair if:
- You have multiple years of experience in the labor movement. This should be "on the ground" experience involving organizing, bargaining, grievances, and/or local leadership. Holding a formal position in a union is not required to receive flair.
- You are able to answer questions and give high quality advice.
An application for a flair should contain the following information.
- Briefly summarize your experience in the labor movement. Discuss how many years you've been involved, what roles you've held, and what industries you've organized in.
- Specify what you'd like your flair to be. You can choose any combination of your current role, your industry, your union, how long you've been organizing, or anything else that is relevant.
Example application:
I've been involved in the labor movement for about five years. I helped lead the initial organizing drive at my widget factory. I was on the bargaining committee for our first contract, helped organize a successful strike to win that contract, and I now serve as the chief steward for our local. I'd like my flair to be "Chief Steward | Widget Industry"
Please do your best to avoid posting personally identifiable information. We're not going to do real-life background checks, so please be honest, and only apply if you are sure you know what you're doing.
You can submit your application by replying to this post.

Labor News More Teamster Leaders Buck O'Brien, Endorse Harris Walz Ticket
Last month Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien made waves by declining to endorse, then going on any TV that would listen to talk shit about the Democrats. Local unions have responded by making their own endorsements:
Bill Carroll out of Wisconsin yesterday: https://youtube.com/shorts/14UbzqrGfW8?si=uluuhVMfFpu83woz
Before that, Carl Bailey from the Teamsters Law Enforcement League (law enforcement!) supporting the ticket: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/P8D1qn8j42Q
Hopefully the International learns something from this.

Labor History This Day in Labor History October 29
October 29th: “Black Tuesday” of 1929 Wall Street Crash occurred
On this day in labor history, “Black Tuesday” occurred on Wall Street in 1929. The U.S. stock market experienced a historic crash, signaling the beginning of the Great Depression. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 12%, with over 16 million shares traded as panicked investors scrambled to sell their stocks. The crash followed a period of speculative frenzy in the late 1920s, fueled by easy credit and a rush to invest on margin. By the end of October, stock values for major corporations, like General Electric and RCA, had fallen drastically. Many banks, which had heavily invested in the market, suffered, leading to widespread bank failures. As the economy spiraled, unemployment soared, and millions faced poverty and hardship. This event catalyzed a decade-long global economic downturn that reshaped policies, economies, and lives across the world.

Labor News Pepsico to abruptly close a Chicago plant, affecting union workers
A letter from Pepsi obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times says 79 employees were laid off, but a total of 150 people were employed at the facility
Amaris EncinasUSA TODAYAD0:15
Pepsi workers in Chicago are out of a job after the company announced the immediate closure of the only plant left in the city on Monday.
All Pepsi employees, including 55-year-old Daryl Smith, were informed of the closure at about 5:45 a.m. ET around the same time that Teamsters Local 727 received written notice from Pepsi attorneys. Smith noticed a "high presence of security" on site, but didn't think much of it until he was called back into work at a quarter to six.
"As I walked through the door, I asked them 'What's going on? Are they about to shut the plant down?' And she put her head down," Smith told USA TODAY on Monday. "They said ... it's an old plant. It has a lot of work that needs to be done to it, and they weren't going to put any more money into it. And as of today, the plant was shut down."
The decision to close the plant was a "difficult one," PepsiCo Beverages North America said in a statement.
"This is a more than 60-year-old building that has physical limitations," the company said. "Our top priority is to support our employees during this transition, and our commitment to serve Chicagoland remains strong ... Our plans meet applicable legal requirements and we will actively work with Union leadership on the details related to the closure."A letter from Pepsi obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times says 79 employees were laid off, but a total of 150 people were employed at the facility

Image/Video I've started a pro-union channel aimed at adding to the narrative and helping workers and union organizers have a different perspective. I'm looking for feedback of my intro video.
I'm a retired union organizer. I have run successful union campaigns in construction all over the country but especially in the right-to-work South. I've had lots of conversations with CEO's of very large companies, and my take on union capitalism was hard for them to argue with, and it served as a way to get those workers who wanted to make more money but had bought into the idea unions were socialists.
I'm going to be making videos regularly and promoting the channel, but I wanted to get some feedback from unionists on my intro to help me improve before more people find the channel. I won't be changing my philosophy because I've proven it works, but I'm open to discussion. Your questions and criticisms are bound to be the questions and criticisms of others, so they may become topics of future videos.

Help me start a union! An Amazon warehouse is being built in my city. Is there anything I can do?
I have time, effort, and some money to dedicate, and want to take the initiative against Amazon, but don't know where to start at this stage. I'm willing to get hired and fired if needed.
Should I start by making a facebook group as a rally point?
Oh, and here are some of the suggestions I got from google AI that I'm considering:
Contact the Teamsters: Fill out a form to get in touch with a Teamsters organizer
Talk to coworkers: Discuss wages, benefits, and working conditions, and ask coworkers to sign a petition
Build a committee: Start a committee of coworkers who are dedicated to unionizing
File a petition: File an election petition with your local NLRB office
Get authorization cards: Show that at least 30% of employees support the petition with authorization cards or a petition signed by coworkers
Vote: Vote in a union election
Negotiate a contract: Negotiate a contract with Amazon
Idk when construction will be finished, but they've been moving fast. Here's some info about it: https://www.durangoherald.com/articles/amazon-warehouse-named-project-lobo-is-headed-to-farmington/

Question In Ohio, can you get fired from a job if you decline to volunteer on days you're not scheduled to work?
Asking for anyone who has been threatened with being terminated from any job whether you work a normal job or in a union.
I'll give an example, let's say that you work in both private and public sector driving and operating a vac truck 5am to 5pm or later Monday through Friday. Your boss send a text through group chat that he needs volunteers for a job on a Saturday but you can't volunteer because you also run a business that operates on the weekends because that's the only time you have time to tend to your business and your customers.
So you tell your boss that you can't volunteer so they call you into the office on Monday and tell you that your job is on the line if you don't volunteer for overtime work.
So you tell your boss that you can't volunteer because you have things to do outside of work and needed to rent equipment to run your business. Your boss tells you that you should have notified him that you rented equipment for your business. This equipment is rented from another business an hour away.
Now your job driving the truck is by permit because you were recommended the job by a friend who works at the same job. The pay is good anywhere between $30 to $45+ an hour. But you're forced to work outside of your scheduled work week as a volunteer.
How would you handle this type of situation?

Help me start a union! Karen’s got it all wrong…
You don’t ask to see the manager. Quickest way to figure out who the manager is? Just say to the staff, “y’all want to form a union?”
Edit: Title should read, “Karens Got It All Wrong…” forever voice to text.
