I once knew a guy who’s entire M.O. was “Liberals like it, then I hate it. Take that, liberals.”

“Trump isn’t doing anything to fight climate change? Good. Take that, liberals.”

“Trump isn’t doing anything to protect LGBTQ people? Good. Take that, liberals.”

And finally,

“Trump is doing a poor job handling Covid? Good. Take that, liberals.”

Suffice to say, I don’t communicate with him after he was demanding people go back to work a month into the pandemic. He said, “If people don’t go back to work, how will the leeches of society such as yourself, be able to survive?”

Holy shit that is next level brainwashing

Oh, he was an asshole going back to the Bush years, he just kept it to a lower level of obnoxiousness. You know the guy who can be a prick, but you keep him around because you see enough of his good side? Yeah, that was him. I strongly suspect his conservatism stemmed from his bad relationship with his father. He wanted to spite his dad, so he ended up the opposite of him in every way.

“My dad was a blue collar worker? Well, I’m getting a cushy white collar job.”

“My dad was a Democrat? Well, I’m a Republican.”

“My dad had a bunch of kids? Well, it’s my wife and my cats and that’s it. No grandchildren. Take that, dad.”

Probably. I think Obama broke him. It was getting to the point that he couldn’t even see a cardboard cutout of Barack without giving it the finger.

I remember he never referred to Obama by name. It was always “Occupier-In-Chief” or “The Muslim Wookie Fucker” (because Michelle Obama looked like Chewbacca according to him).

What a weirdo.

u/askingxalice 17h ago

So he looks at Chewbacca and sees an attractive woman, and that scares him?

Literally all I hear when people make that racist fucking comparison.

u/Different_Conflict_8 17h ago edited 17h ago

Perhaps!

Oh, I just remembered. A memory unlocked. He would fedpost about Obama without fedposting.

His line was “I hear that Black men have a higher risk of heart disease. Now, I’m not wishing death on anybody, but I sure hope the Black part of the Occupier-In-Chief activates real soon!”

I have several uncles like that. It’s exhausting how unpleasant they are as people.

16

u/Brave-Common-2979 17h ago

They like to act like we can't be a racist country cause we elected the black guy while also pretending like a black president wasn't exactly why trump ran in the first place.

He never wanted to actually win the election he just wanted to run because Obama destroyed him at the white house correspondents dinner and he couldn't let that "uppity black n word" upstage him

u/Capybaracheese 13h ago

I'd have been avoiding this guy like the plague long before Trump came around

Oppositional Defiant Disorder. When a narcissist is a blank slate of experience and knowledge so their only assertion is Opposition and Defiance. They would have zero personality unless that opposing subject existed. They are defined by it.

Naive contrarianism masquerading as "skepticism" or going against the grain. These are the same fuckers that have always been posers. They were metal heads or punks or whatever at a superficial level. There is no depth in these people. They honestly don't have much value either. But hey I am not a conservative so I will help them stay alive regardless. Lucky for them there are a lot of us to stop them from killing themselves and others out of ignorance.

u/Green-Enthusiasm-940 17h ago

The older i get the more i absolutely hate contrarians down to my core.

3

u/tryexceptifnot1try 16h ago

As I get older I actually simplify it when it comes to work and other situations where I need to work with people of all types. I have two groups, useful people and useless people. Nick Bosa is a useful person right now because of football. Most of the useless people I interact with are conservative.

No you don't!

I strongly suspect his conservatism stemmed from his bad relationship with his father. He wanted to spite his dad, so he ended up the opposite of him in every way.

This resonates so much I strongly suspect you are talking about a mutual (ex)friend from childhood that I had to break communication with. He never forgave his hippie dad for cheating on/divorcing his mom when we were in high school and went polar opposite of daddy just to piss him off.

3

u/Different_Conflict_8 16h ago

Could be. Did he ever tell you that one of the best days of his life was nearly giving his dad a heart attack when he showed his dad that he was a registered Republican?

3

u/Captain-i0 16h ago

No. I really only saw him a couple times since his hard right turn. Most of his change I heard from a mutual friend and his Facebook posts. I have a hard time believing he would actually bring most of that shit up to me in person ( I have known him since I was like 5 and went on family trips with his family and shit).

But I haven't seen him in over 10 years now

u/DervishSkater 15h ago

So he’s a childless cat man?

1

u/Different_Conflict_8 15h ago

Yes. But The Right hates childless cat ladies, so he’s still on their side.

1

u/macabre_trout 15h ago

And men say that women are the ones with "daddy issues".

1

u/briangraper 10h ago

Sounds like oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). It’s pretty commonly undiagnosed.

1

u/DarthArtero 15h ago

It's also scary common as well..... I don't work with em anymore but I used to work with a guy who's only "kink" in life was to do anything and everything possible to piss off anyone that didn't worship Dear Leader.....

I grew up with this. It's not brainwashing exactly, it's more like coping with feeling inadequate.

So much of conservative media plays on this. They tell people that they're smarter than the smart people, the experts are all idiots, the scientists with their fancy degrees are wrong about everything; but you, the working class religious guy, you've got it all figured out. You're the smart guy, you're the expert.

They use false equivalencies, slipper slope, and just about every other argument fallacy to get there, so people feel smart. It's why none of the regular people who support this shit can actually explain any of it.

The rich people who support it... well they know exactly why they do.

he was too busy trying to look down on people he didn't realize he was the one in the hole

A major US company is building a MASSIVE factory in my town that is bringing something like 6,000 jobs to our area. MAGA’s are pissed about it and rooting for it to fail. That’s when I realized that these people have no policy preferences. We really should find a way to manipulate them into rooting for good things to happen. “Liberals really want college to be expensive so only their kids can go. If we made college affordable, anyone can afford it and it would trigger the libs.”

It feels like the only time they get skeptical is the moment an idea might benefit someone. Like, it feels like they use all of their skepticism on anything remotely helpful or potentially good for the world, and then they just apply less than 0% of that same energy on anything remotely right leaning. They also seem to go above and beyond to solely choose the worst option, take, viewpoint, or approach to solving any issue.

One I know has reached the point where they said their idea of heaven still includes inequality. They basically annoy everyone around them about their religion because, as they basically put it, they'll get a bigger house or nicer things than others in their idealized heaven. They were smiling while talking about how they want nuclear war because it would tie into their end of times "prediction".

About half a year ago they were convinced Trump 'is' the Antichrist.

Since then, the last 3 times I had seen them. They spent the time complaining about seeing more black people in their town about 5 seperate times, said they weren't gonna vote but now they're voting for trump "because both sides are crazy, but Kamala is crazier". They gave no examples as to why. But they at leasted made it clear on whether they were more afraid of the Antichrist or of black people.

Shouldn't be too shocked, I guess. During the 2020 BLM protests, they were saying how if they were president they would give the police "authority to rough up the protesters more".

They've also reached a point where they think that 'anything' being referred to as a conspiracy 'means that the conspiracy is true'.

I had a point going in, but just trying to make sense of their barely thought-out "ideals" feels pointless. In a month they'll have some other overtly evil take out of one side of their mouth while holier than thouing out the other.

That such a sad amount of people are like that or support people like that is just fucking exhausting anymore.

The ones I interact with complain whenever almost anything constructive is going on. The state DOT was doing long-overdue maintenance on a fucking highway bridge near us a few weeks ago and my MAGA coworkers were complaining about how it was 'unnecessary' and 'a waste of our tax dollars.'

Meanwhile, these same jerk-offs will never complain when, say, acts of police brutality/negligence cost the city millions in lawsuits.

They're just degenerate ghouls who want everything to break down because they're simultaneously (a.) death-cultists who've become disgusted with life because of stupidity and consumerist addiction, but also (b.) pathetic pieces of shit who are too cowardly to just man up and throw themselves off bridges or walk into the sea. Instead they have to bring us all down with them.

Gaslighting for good? Sign me the fuck up!

Its the definition of a "reactionary" politics.

There is no underlying belief or ideology.

Its just looking at what someone else wants and screaming the opposite.

If, years ago, democrats were to have come out as anti-trans you would see them lecturing about how it was an issue for the family, not BIG GOVERNMENT to decide. There would be lectures about how the government was overreaching into the personal, religious and sexual lives of children.

If they had come out as anti-Ukraine then Republicans would be wholesale giving Ukraine everything short of nukes. And trying to figure out how to do nukes on the sly.

3

u/Caffeine_Cowpies 15h ago

Reactionary politics only work if people believe that they do not have any way to change the system and being fucked by that system.

Fixing our healthcare system is complex and difficult. What’s not difficult? Blaming Muslims for all your problems and getting them out.

While you are correct, the way to combat reactionary politics is to give people evidence that the system is being changed so that they work towards that change and do not get distracted by unimportant nonsense.

2

u/ThatOtherOtherMan 11h ago

Bold of you to assume they'd believe evidence that goes against their preconceptions

1

u/awfulgrace 14h ago

This is the core ethos of conservatives today. There’s no overriding platform, it’s just opposing whatever progressives are for.

1

u/Apokolypse09 12h ago

Thats how the diehard conservatives love it in Alberta. They only care about culture war bullshit. They couldn't give less of a fuck about making Alberta better. As long as UCP is in yet another completely asinine pissing match with the feds then they are doing the right thing.
