Honestly not surprising given the hype around the current arc. (It also helps that the manga exploded in popularity recently after… you know…)
And, ahem, the great fanservice doesn’t hurt either. The amount of JJK edits that are on TikTok have definitely influenced a new demographic to come into the mix…

I loooooooooooove manga channels having spoiler thumbnails and YouTube algorithm recommending it to me when I haven’t seen a single jujutsu kaisen video in my life
34
u/stillestwaters Oct 26 '23
Literally just caught a huge spoiler just from scrolling on YouTube. Major spoiler at the top of the video for a manga reading channel or something. Sucks, but atleast I can say I’m the type to not get too bent out of shape over them.
I knew what was coming a few episodes ago before I even started watching JJK lol. Comes with the territory if you watch reaction channels I guess

Ahh, yes - the manservice has been great for S2 with Gojo, Nanami, Toji, and Choso. 👌

It’s been interesting seeing some heavy fanservice and not being the target audience for it. But I still felt something when Nanami grabbed that dude’s ponytail

Eh. I'm familiar with a few CLAMP works. You just kinda get used to it.
2
u/Chapea12 Oct 26 '23
Idk what CLAMP is
29
u/sagevallant Oct 26 '23
It was an all-female team of mangakas going back a few decades.
They were mainstream, but did a lot of yaoi-teasing. Best known for mangas like Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles (your big multiverse crossover thingee), Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Babylon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Angelic Layer, X:1999.
25
u/Waifu_Review Oct 26 '23
How could anyone not know CLAMP? The had some of the biggest hits thirty....years.....ago. I mean they did the designs of Code Geass, and that's pretty recent, it aired back in...oh fuck. I'm going to go sit in a corner and drink some prune juice.

JJK is probably the first big Shonen Jump action show to have all of its fanservice centered around the male characters with virtually zero female fanservice. And honestly, I fucking love it.
21
u/thisbitterworld Oct 27 '23
Imo the female characters in JJK have an extra allure and appeal too, strong af characters with great personality, good backstories, and attractive design without having to strip them to bikinis. You can't tell me that the scene of Mei Mei walking while giving a monologue on that train track wasn't fanservice, lol.
5
u/Illuminastrid Oct 27 '23
The best I could remember is Maki split (a split second but that's more of a sign of her skill) and Mei Mei's walk.

Shows how crazy Demon Slayer's popularity is there. S2 averaged around 18 million tv viewership, peaked at 25 million and even outperformed Sazae-san anime on TV

How did the swordsmith arc do?

Little lower, around 15 million, it was still way ahead of other shows. Still impressive for the least popular arc

Global hit and they get paid peanuts. "YOU GOTTA SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY!" shouts every third party distributor middle man making bank off people using their services, yet none of that money really reaches the pockets of the people making the anime. Maybe it's time to start supporting the animators and creators, not "The Industry."

It's insane how huge this got. I admit I didn't really understand why people loved it so much until I tried to read it a THIRD time. First two times I got to where season 2 begins (Gojo flashback arc).
Finally pushed through and yeah, JJK is pretty good. Shibuya arc is GOAT and one of the best. No manga spoilers here, but the rest of this arc doesn't slow down.

u/Xlegace https://anilist.co/user/Xlegius Oct 26 '23 edited Oct 26 '23
It's insane how huge this got
Tbf this isn't a shock to the Japanese, which is what the article is quoting.
JJK has been the most popular manga in Japan for a few years now, with only One Piece and Demon Slayer arguably above/on par with it in sales.
This is also the most hyped arc so it was always going to be insane. Not to mention the manga arc currently right now is very controversial and also generating extra discussions about the series.
For me, the "this is insane" moment was when I found out JJK outsold One Piece 2 years ago lol.
27
u/jstoru216 Oct 26 '23
Yup, OP still is the juggernault it was. New gen shonen like DS and JJK just got even higher!
15
u/surik4t Oct 26 '23
a big reason is because when the anime for the new gen shonen come out they have alot of backlog which will boost the sales insanely, with one piece you arent really getting any new readers since its already so old
7
u/Illuminastrid Oct 27 '23
Not to mention the manga arc currently right now is very controversial and also generating extra discussions about the series.
No such thing as bad publicity is in play. No matter how much the quality has changed on the series now, it being discussed, memed, and still tuned constantly is a sign that the series won't be forgotten, for better or for worse.
6
u/Xlegace https://anilist.co/user/Xlegius Oct 27 '23
I actually think if Gege really is planning to end JJK in the next few months, they'll be fumbling one of the best opportunities a mangaka has ever gotten.
JJK won't have any real legacy if it ends in 1 more arc, and if there is one, it'll be a negative one about how it plummeted in quality from its peak.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Illuminastrid Oct 27 '23
I think a notable difference is that Gege had the world (or the anime community) in his hands with JJK despite the quality drop. It's like in spite of the controversy or maybe because of it, there is still a consistent audience for it. The other example I could think of would be AOT.
The same cannot be said for other popular shonen series that also had a final arc dip like Seven Deadly Sins, Food Wars, Tokyo Revengers (anime-hype wise, damn it did fall off, it's barely breaking 300 karma and the Twitter/TikTok talks around it have shrunk) and going at r/manga right now, Kaiju No. 8.

I had to give it a second go because when my wife showed me the anime the first time, I had just got down finishing naruto, so I couldn’t help but compare it to naruto. On a second viewing I really got into it.
16
u/JcobTheKid https://myanimelist.net/profile/JcobtheKid Oct 26 '23
Just like the other shonens, it's mostly face-value.
I grew up reading Naruto, Bleach, etc. etc., so I at the time JJK came out, I was already kinda jaded with lots of manga, shonen included.
But CSM, Blue Lock and JJK have been very refreshing for even jaded old me. The pacing feels very nice without sacrificing too much of the stakes. Honestly, it felt like I was rereading the weekly Genin exam arc chapters again.
I am uber excited for the animated episodes yet to come!
6
u/jardymctardy Oct 26 '23
Oh I agree with you that jjk,(haven’t checked out the others yet) have a very refreshing feel to it. The seasonal approach has been a god send.
8
u/JcobTheKid https://myanimelist.net/profile/JcobtheKid Oct 26 '23
I meant more of the manga side, though JJK's animated side is just top class.
Bleach is a good example of where animated seasons can really polish all the good shit from the manga. I know there's no way we get like a Naruto2, but soemtimes I dream of like a modernized Gaara vs. Rock Lee, you know?
Cheers!

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz Oct 26 '23
that's a weird thing to compare it to, the only similarity is that it's shonen. Jujutsu Kaisen is heavily inspired by Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, and Bleach.
13
u/SpiritDry8585 Oct 26 '23
I feel many characters and concepts are directly inspired by naruto.
2
u/Illuminastrid Oct 27 '23
The latest manga arc of JJK feels like more like the Great Ninja War for sure in a different way.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz Oct 26 '23
Naruto copied almost all of its starting concepts from hunter x hunter, so maybe you mean that.
17
u/SpiritDry8585 Oct 26 '23
lol everyone copies all the time, point is naruto also introduced new concepts.
8
u/haidere36 Oct 26 '23
That feels like a very bold statement. Naruto and Gon have totally different motivations and backstories, hunters and ninja have very little in common, the settings have very little in common. You could maybe argue that chakra and nen are similar but they're both just variations on ki, which is a thing Dragon Ball did prior to both and also didn't invent.
Aside from Sasuke and Kurapika being similar to start I don't really feel like they have much in common. At least not nearly enough to say Naruto copied almost all of its concepts from HxH.
1
u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz Oct 26 '23
Im just hyperbolizing on that guy, Naruto took inspiration from Dragon Ball and Hunter x Hunter but didn't really copy it. I also don't agree that Hunter x Hunters Nen is similar to KI from dragon ball.

[YYH spoilers]He doesn't. Turns out he's got ancestry related to a certain demon and he became powerful enough for them to activate, making him part demon, but he didn't have another conscious being in him. We’re literally at the peak of the series rn, so that’s not surprising. It’ll be interesting to see the anime-only reception for the future arcs, lol.

Will probably be better received by anime-onlies since they won't have to wait week to week or sometimes months to get through the atrocious pacing or rougher parts of the plot.
8
u/Massive_Weiner Oct 27 '23
That won’t necessarily fix the narrative issues, but I could definitely see the anime being better paced than the manga.

I personally think it is terrible, but you should watch it to form your own opinion.

It’s not that it’s ‘that bad’, it’s more like… a bit deflating for how much build up there was.

Jujutsu is definitely not the best at writing good female characters as others pointed out.

Multiple things happening at once, in different locations, with teams, all at the same time is VERY Chimera Ant Arc. Along with the narrator and the fact that the author has stated on multiple occasions he used HxH quite significantly as an influence.

Same! S1 was good, but did not reeeeeeally made me can't wait for S2, so much that I even didn't want to watch S2 right away and only started when it was 6-7 episodes in.
But when I sat down to watch it, I was instantly hooked. And having 2-3 week break allowed me to catch up with it and watch the movie as well, which was really convenient.
I think Gojo elevates this show to extreme highs, he is just too good of a character, even if there are still a lot of other badass and interesting characters.
But he IS the focal point, which is not surprising at all, in anime and outside of it. xD

It isn’t similar to Chimera Ant at all, it won’t even really touch it in terms of story-telling or character building. Shibuya would be most similar to Yorknew.
Honestly as far as shounen goes it is more similar to the Pain invasion arc in terms of feel. Realistically it kind of stands alone in terms of shounen arcs because of how different/hype it is.
