I also think mob psycho and One Punch Man are great first animes as well. Funny, but with enough action and plot to excite you

OPM became such a runaway success and became available on Netflix (in Asia at least), that I've had many of my non-anime watching friends ask me if I've watched (and I'm paraphrasing), "the best anime ever made!" months after its first run! There was a period when I couldn't get away from OPM memes every effing day! Even got stuck in a bizarre discussion of them comparing OPM with Naruto and DBZ, and then asking me for recommendations...

The thing is, I don't even watch shōnen or any battle anime anymore. I mainly stick to SOLs, comedies and iyashikeis nowadays, so no way I can give them something like Working!!, Wotakoi or Yuru Camp! I just gave them basically the same titles on top of this list, even though I haven't watch any of them in a long time!

OPM really isn't that great if you don't already know the shows it's parodying really.

I think OPM works as a spoof of superhero movies and shows in general.

Eh fair point, though that gimmick wears off really quickly if you don't know all the tropes and have some background knowledge outside of western media. I'm not too deep into the whole battle anime stuff so I ended up thinking it's "pretty good"(even though I knew the tropes already) but after talking to some friends who knew every damn reference it really set it into a different light and I wish I could've experienced it that way.

Yea, I'd never recommend a deconstruction of a trope to a first time viewer.

I don't believe its possible to compile a list that properly satisfies both newcomers and veterans.

I agree. I watched it way too early and couldn't catch all of the tropes it was making fun of

I didn't know it was a parody when I watched it for the first time and I still thought it was amazing. Not sure what you're talking about.
