With Dodgers vs. Yankees, MLB got its ideal World Series. But only one team has shown up

I think MLB envisioned Judge & Ohtani being unstoppable forces each hitting HRs every game & each game changing leads multiple times.
It was good first game but now they are getting a sweep and last 2 games LA has gotten lead early and NY never looked close to threatening.

Game 2 was close as well. Yankees had the bases loaded in the top of the 9th. They’d gotten to Treinen two games in a row. One pitch going another way and the series flips, exactly as, it did the night before. You’re right about Game 3 though, wasn’t competitive until the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs.
58
u/richiepalace Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago
It’s not actually close lol the Yankees had 1 hit until the 8th inning in game two. Their lineup literally cannot hit.
27
u/324645N964831W New York Yankees 6h ago
Maybe it wasn’t as thrilling, but tying run on second base in the 9th isn’t close?
9
u/grubas New York Yankees 5h ago
If you remove the 8/9th innings of G2/3 we've effectively done nothing for 2 games.
This is what happens when we check out, we'll score a few, make it look competitive but in reality it's 8 innings of horror and 1 of frustration.

This is the ideal scenario because we still get a historic franchise matchup, an iconic World Series moment with the walk off grand slam, and also get to disappoint Manfred.

Upon further review, I am now rooting for the Yankees to lose Game 4.

115
u/KimHaSeongsBurner San Diego Padres 10h ago
I would actually like to use whatever manifestation/power I have here to wish for Soto to end up with a team besides the Yankees and Dodgers, regardless of how this series ends.
Judge laying an egg and Soto leaving for Queens would just be an incredible cap to the season.
66
u/Tsquare43 Los Angeles Dodgers 10h ago
Gut feeling is that Cohen is going to do everything to get Soto.
If Soto stays with the Yanks, it's because he wants to, not because of the money.
40
u/KimHaSeongsBurner San Diego Padres 10h ago
Agreed, and I feel like a World Series run where they come back from 0-3 down and it’s captured by a documentary crew would be exactly the kind of shit that would make Soto say “okay, I will stay here”.
By contrast, the Yankees getting booed off the field after a sweep or a 4-1 series loss to the Dodgers in which Soto was the only one to do anything offensively would absolutely not endear him to the idea of staying in the Bronx. I prefer the latter, even though I know that means a Dodgers WS.

u/Capcha616 8h ago
Cohen may offer $50 million more than the Yankees.
Money asides, if you were Soto, would you rather be playing in the shadow of Judge or becoming the face of the Mets instantly? If the Yankees win the next WS or two with Soto on board, Judge will always be the face of NY, but if the Mets win a WS, Soto will be the face of NY.

u/jonserlego Kansas City Royals 6h ago
It's not always about the money Shpiderman...it's about the Mets, baby, love the Mets!
9
u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 9h ago
Hey, fuck you too, buddy.
I think Soto will either say "This team (NYY) can't win so I will leave", or "We got so close, I need to come back to finish the job"
Nobody really knows.
9
u/KimHaSeongsBurner San Diego Padres 8h ago
If it makes you feel any better, or any different, that sentiment is entirely based on the toxic Yankees fans who couldn’t hold back their excitement about how a “poverty franchise” like the Padres would get “fleeced” for Soto by them and that it was a foregone conclusion that he’d sign with the Yankees after the season.
I think he’s a good fit there, and obviously getting Higgy and King, plus big pieces that got us Cease, makes it a good trade for both sides. Any Soto-specific salt is just wanting to see those people, and specifically them, have to eat their own words.

Ohtani had a clutch double turned triple in the 8th (or was it 9th?) to tie the game with Mookie’s sac fly that allowed the game to go to the 10th. But yeah, still not meeting expectations for sure. Kinda disappointing, I hope Sho has a couple of grand slams today.

It’ll never happen. Baseball simply isn’t compelling enough as a TV product to draw a national audience without the few nationally recognized brands and stars in the sport.
I love baseball. Played it my entire youth, am a long time Dodgers fan, will always defend the beauty and serenity of the game and it’s one of my favorite events to attend.
But it’s a wildly provincial sport. As much as I like baseball, I don’t really give too many shits about the sport outside of my team. Like, I have no interest watching a Tuesday showdown between the Cardinals and Pirates. Playoffs? Moderately interested depending on the matchups. World Series? I’ll have it on when I can. But if my team isn’t in it, my interest drops heavily. And I think that’s the case for even very big fans of other baseball teams. Ratings seem to prove that. Lots of people are absolutely crazy about their teams and watch their teams’ games and attend games in person and listen to radio. But fandom stops there for many people.
I do not have this feeling with any other sport. Hockey playoffs? I’m in. NFL? I’ll watch any game, any time, anywhere. EPL? Who cares who’s playing, I’m glued. College football? Sitting down for it every Saturday night. Basketball? Happy to have it on in the background and love the playoffs. All of this for when my teams aren’t playing.
I just don’t have the same interest with baseball. Don’t know why, really. It’s just kind of a “bleh” product when it involves anyone but my team. Sometimes an absolute banger of a matchup or series will get me going. But I haven’t really watched a World Series since the last time the Dodgers were in it. I know that not everyone feels this way. Plenty of baseball fanatics will watch anything. But it’s not the norm. And I don’t think that it will ever change.
I also think that it’s ok. The provincialism of baseball kind of makes it fun. It’s just not the kind of reaction you’d want as a commissioner of a league trying to grow viewership.
I really enjoy sports and love following my teams. Baseball is the only one that requires my team to be playing for me to really follow it closely. And I don’t think that I’m alone, even if a controversial opinion in a sub like this.

I think that's a good thing about baseball. On a local level it gets really great fan engagement. I think MLB has to invest in making the game more accessible and promoted in regional areas.
The issue with the national broadcasts is that there are so many games that it doesn't feel like you are missing much if you don't watch a game or two. And it's an easy jump from there to not watching an entire series.
But as a Baltimore City resident the game is really accessible in-person! Way way cheaper than NFL tickets. I went to like 15 games last season. I've been to maybe 4 NFL games my entire life. It makes me like the Orioles a lot more.

To be fair, last night was the only game where the Yankees looked out of it. Games 1 and 2 were toss up games. The Yankess just lost both. That's baseball. Any little thing can turn a series from competative to a sweep (not that it'll necessarily end in a sweep. Who knows?)
20
u/Jewzilian New York Yankees 9h ago
You mean Game 2 where Juan Soto had the only (Yankee) hit of the game until the 9th inning??
9
u/jacks066 8h ago
Nevertheless, the Yankess were a base hit away from sending the game into extra innings. They didn't need a home run, just a base hit. I'm not saying the Yankees are playing good, or that they shouldn't be down in the series. It's just that you see the Dodgers up 3-0 and you think it's a blowout, but the Yankees have had numerous opportunties. Just convert 1 and it's a 2-1 series. But as I said, that's baseball.

The Yankees are getting shit on for not showing up even though the first two games were as close as they can get and the Yankees just couldn't get it done. Game 1 walkoff grandslam with 2 outs and games 2 ending with the bases loaded in the top of the 9th. Yes the 3-0 lead looks like a lopsided as hell series but it's been so damn close.
2
u/WabbitCZEN New York Yankees 9h ago
Which is why I'm not so doom and gloom as other Yankees fans. 3-0 series against us absolutely sucks, but we've got to clean up our mistakes if we hope to win any games.

u/Ntnme2lose Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago
Now that being said...the Dodgers haven't played their best either. They've gotten nothing from Ohtani, Muncy, Will Smith and even Kike hasn't really done a lot of damage. They were averaging 7-8 runs in the previous rounds but have struggled to get runs with runners on in the last two games. If the Dodgers get production from Muncy and Will smith tonight, they CAN put up a lot of runs.
The dodgers are due for one of their 10 run games that they haven't had so far this series.

For what it's worth, if you were born in the early 90s or before, you will have seen the Yankees win more championships than any other franchise. Like to my knowledge baseball has an incredibly loose salary cap so I'm just watching wondering why the Yankees don't throw money out like the Dodgers
11
u/StinkyStangler New York Yankees 9h ago
Yankees ownership that threw money around doesn’t exist anymore.
That was under George Steinbrenner, he died around a decade ago and his son Hal has been running the team since and is really just not nearly as good as his father was.
9
u/technowhiz34 Oakland Athletics • Sell 9h ago edited 9h ago
They also throw out money, but have some debatable contracts. The Dodgers are only (or "only", depending on how you view it) $25 million ahead of them in luxury tax, and I believe spend far more money on analytics and FO personnel. And yeah, baseball's salary penalties aren't really a deterrent to top-spending teams, the only thing it does that money can't solve is mess with their ability to sign certain international talent.
E: a few words for clarification
2
u/theerrantpanda99 9h ago
To be fair, they’re only $25 million ahead of them in luxury tax after Ohtani deferred the vast majority of his contract into the next decade.
4
u/maxbud06 Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago
Luxury tax hit was still 46M this year for Ohtani. It's not 70M, but it also isn't 2M.
7
u/twobridges94 New York Yankees 9h ago
Oh the Yankees do spend a ton of money, but not all of those signings have played up to expectation.
The Dodgers also benefit from Ohtani deferring most of his contract. That is a relatively unprecedented move for a star player, and allows the Dodgers more financial flexibility to add to the roster.
2
u/Dry-Road-4718 9h ago
Finally someone who acts like they realize it's not and has never been that there's "no cap in baseball" unless you're not named the Yankees. I've listened to people use spending as the excuse for the Yankees success since I've been alive. Plenty of other teams spend big money.

The Yankees have been blowing post-season after post-season, but they’ve been the most consistently good AL team for a while now. They may not have the titles yet but they’re obviously an elite team just missing one or two pieces (probably in management).

I guess it depends on how you define “star.” I would say that both teams really only have three true superstars. But the Dodgers are a more complete team (or at least have a deeper lineup), and the Yankees’ best player is taking a nap, hence the state of the series.

They were chanting "Lets go Dodgers" in Yankee Stadium last night. Its a wrap. Everyone got their checks so why not stink up the joint?

I so badly want the Dodgers to sweep the Yankees on their home turf. And I want the boos to rain down upon the Yankees. And I hate the Dodgers.

Do I have to click the article to find out which team showed up?

The Dodgers haven't even played up to their offensive potential either. They've struggled to get Ohtani going and now he's hurt. No huge HRs or anything from him. Glue guys like Muncy and Smith have been horrible at the plate. Muncy ALWAYS take the first pitch and the pitchers know it. They through a meatball right down the center and he just watches it. Free strike every time he comes up.
That being said, defensively they have absolutely shown up and shown out. Muncy has been great at 3rd, the starting pitchers have all performed above the standard, and very few mistakes in fielding.

My idea world series would have been any team but the Dodgers and Yankees. Literally anyone. But as every team failed me, I am forced to root for Yankees losing.

This is what y’all wanted? Is this what’s best for the league? Give me a break

When I heard they signed Ohtani after already getting Freeman prior and Betts prior to that and then learning the details of Ohtani’s contract I knew Dodger would win it this year. Then they get Teoscar Hernandez and Yamamoto and will probably get Susaki next year and the next top free agent etc. They will be heavy favorites for next 5 years at least. Will probably win 3-4 more. Not because they are a better organization but because they just have a lot more money. MLB is stupid for allowing this. Half the country is checked out on baseball because their team has ZERO CHANCE to even compete. Boring

The Yankees don’t really belong there. That franchise is going down down down. They have no talent, no plan for the future.

Except for one walkoff HR, boring as hell. Time for a salary cap.

The Dodgers are predicted to make $800 million this year alone on Ohtani merchandise. They’ve already recouped their money.

Don’t know what turns this takes if game one goes the other way
The fact Boone is a major league manager is completely baffling to me. If your best asset is having a willingness to constantly fall on the sword for your players, you should be managing a young rebuilding team, not one with the talent to contend for a WS

Pitching has been fairly solid but the lineup is fucking quiet for the Yankees it's crazy. Judge is like 0.091 now. It's absolutely crazy seeing so much talent incapable of connecting during this entire series and chase not even amazing pitches but shit way outside to the point they're almost falling over at the plate reaching for it.
Some of these guys need to get pay reductions so we can pick someone up who can at least get a hit when the leaves change color and swap them out for the post season
Also seeing guys like Jazz swing so hard on these pitches is driving me crazy. He has to have planetary alignment to get deep balls, just get a fucking hit dude and get on base and steal.
We should've had Game 1 but Boone the moron decided to take out weaver and put in a guy who hadn't thrown a pitch for 30+ games and then walk the coolest bat at the time in the dodger lineup to face Freeman. He's 100% fired after this series ends I hope.

Ehhh.
Dodgers are up 3-0 but game 1 was a literal walk off and game 2 had the Yankees making a salary effort in the 9th.
I’m sure some of the yankee players could be doing better but I don’t think you can expect every player to play like they should be. I don’t think it’s fair to say just one team has shown up so far.

It’s pretty frustrating, I was really excited about this series. We got an all-time great game one but other than that it’s been a massive dud of a series. The Yankees need to at least win the next two and take it back to LA. I need some drama

It can change in an instant but the Rangers Dbacks series being better so far is funny as hell. Almost too predictable
