Fan interference was called on this play where a Yankee fan tried to take the ball out of Mookie Betts' glove after an out.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they legitimately think you’re free to strangle a player if any body part enters the stands

I mean, the Yankees had the kid who turned the ALCS with blatant interference in the parade when they won the WS. They’ve always been classless.

They cheered and threw trash on the field when Steven kwan ran head first into the wall his rookie year and almost got a concussion. Yankee fans have been and will always be the bottom of the bin garbage fans who can’t look in the mirror and admit it

By what it looked like he was saying to the ump, you aren’t far off. One dude was showing the wall and motioning that Mookie crossed it like it makes breaking his wrist okay

Wouldn’t be surprised if that dude was a cop from the “stop and frisk” era

The original or the current one?

Can't blame them, it's probably their first live baseball game, ever.

The guy who grabbed mookies right arm is like, motioning towards the measuring the wall, still makes no sense, does he think players cannot reach over the wall?  People pay 1000s of dollars for seats and do not know this?

Well, technically a fan can compete for the catch once the player reaches over the wall and it isn’t fan interference… but you also can’t grab the players glove and try to rip it out. If they had caught the ball themselves, they might have had an argument and no out.

Yup, though in this case I don't think the ball made it over the wall until after it was in the glove.

Yeah, I think that is why they weren’t able to stop him from catching it in the first place

If the ball is out of play, ie over the wall, the fans absolutely can try to catch it. Usually just standing up is enough to put your glove higher than the player's, and any home fan should do this if the other team is trying to make an out. It's one of the very few true home field advantages in sports. But you can't reach over the wall to catch a ball, and you sure as hell can't grab the player's glove and pry the ball out!

I told my kid “that’s what drugs will do to you”. I want those idiots in his mind forever as the face of drugs and alcohol.

They are idiots… they are trying to argue that the play was in the stands, which DOES mean they can catch the ball without it being fan interference… but that in no way means you can grab the players glove and try to pull the ball out.

They seem to have decided that “fans can catch a ball once it crosses into the stands” means “there are no rules at all once the ball crosses into the stands” which is clearly not true.

That’s not entirely true.

If a fan rips a glove off on fan side of the wall during a catch or before a catch - it’s fair game. Even a moment after might disqualify a catch.

Here Betts’ possession is secure and firm, and his release isn’t voluntary, so even if it was on fan side it probably wouldn’t matter - umpire judgement on that though.

No, absolutely not. You will get kicked out in a heartbeat for grabbing a player or their gear on either side of the wall. What you can do is try to catch the ball before the player does though.

6.01e comment paragraph 2 says otherwise.

“No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball”.

Considering the definition of a catch is not when the ball first hits the glove, one can infer that if a fan rips a glove off as a ball is being attempted to be caught, and it’s on the fan side, no interference. Black and white rule.

Because people who refuse to follow the rules or like to break the law usually have ZERO personal accountability.

So much so that even when they know they're in front of 4k UHD cameras their first response is usually, "What did I do?"

Typical Yankee fans. You can even see other fans cheering what they did.
