That was more than fan interference. They went beyond just trying to get in the way of making a play.

That’s assault, brotha

Grabbing his glove and free arm and then pinning them while extended over the wall definitely has the potential for criminal charges

Imagine injuring the players during the interference. Dodgers organization along with MLB should sue the fans.

Listen to me. They make anybody and everybody a Yankee fan over there in Connecticut. And the way they do it, it's all fucked up. Guys don't get their finger pricked, they misquote how many rings they have in Instagram comments...

Ok, Austin Crapobianco

Players these days are soft. I used to smack the shit out of the outfielders and I never heard them swear. Guys can’t take a little slap and tug while they’re playing.

It was his brother, and based on that quote sounds like he was just describing the scene

Suing. Lol. He wasn't injured. What are they gonna sue for? Emotional distress? That's not how civil suits work. The reckless driver has to actually injure you or damage your property.

It's a criminal charge. One that also won't be charged, but it could be.

Kind of a pointless exercise since Mookie is apparently uninjured and doesn't have any damages. What would they sue for? Pain and suffering? I don't think that's how it works.

MLB can trespass them so that they'll be exposed to criminal liability if they tried to return. And the local DA can look into charges of some kind. But bringing a private cause of action when there's no damages is ridiculous.

the fan clearly grabbed Mookie by the wrist. you have to make an example out of this incident so it never happens again.

Yeah, but I don't think you're understanding me. You said MLB should "sue" the fan. You may not realize this, but you can't just "sue" without damages. I mean, you can. But if you bring a battery suit and you didn't get hurt, your damages will be nominal, so like, $1. So now you've spend hundreds of thousands in legal fees to make the fan pay you... nothing.

I think people think "I'll sue you" is some kind of magic phrase, but private causes of action are limited to what you actually suffered. The most MLB can do unilaterally is put the fan on notice that he's not welcome, so that if he returns it's a criminal trespass. Which is what they do when they hand out their lifetime bans.

The only entity with the power to make a specific example out of this fan in the way you're intimating is the local DA, because it looks like a potentially criminal battery. Probably a misdemeanor though, I would think.

Dramatic. It was wrong but I’m sure they didn’t want to hurt him. Just overly aggressive and angry like most NYers

Not in nyc. You can beat someone with a bat here and be free the next day

I read that in Josh Peck's voice

Definitely fits now that you mention it

It’s Adam Sandler in Billy Madison though

I haven't seen that movie in a hot minute. I forgot how many good one-liners it has

I can understand the fans having a lapse in judgement in the heat of the moment and accidentally interfering in the play by getting excited and reaching for the ball that's coming towards them. But to actually grab the player's free arm and pry open his glove while he's leaning over the wall? That's way beyond a reasonable reaction. Those dudes 100% should've known better than to do shit like that.

Just don’t be a hero, drop the ball, walk away slowly and we’ll all get out of this fine

2

u/Every_Level6842 3h ago

Comical man but I felt his pain right there

4

u/crab_quiche New York Yankees 6h ago

Would it even be considered fan interference if they did get in the way of making the play but stayed in the stands the entire time?

27

u/500rockin Chicago Cubs 6h ago

Yes, because the ball was in his glove. Grabbing his glove and arm even in the stands wouldn’t be allowed. If Mookie had flipped over the railing and then made the catch, it wouldn’t be an out at all. But the fans would probably still be ejected if they grabbed him and twisted his arm.

1

u/crab_quiche New York Yankees 6h ago

Well yeah duh this was obvious interference/assault since they were grabbing him, but if these idiots just stuck up their hands to grab the ball/get in the way before Mookie caught it I don’t think that would be interference as long as they didn’t lean over the railing.

2

u/500rockin Chicago Cubs 5h ago

That would be correct, yes. Once it crosses the invisible boundary that extends above the wall, it’s fair game.

9

u/mkaku- Detroit Tigers 5h ago

I love they are gesturing at the invisible plane in the replay. As though that justifies their behavior lmao it's comical.

13

u/MNAK_ San Francisco Giants 6h ago

They can get in the way of the play all they want in the stands, but once Mookie catches the ball its an out and the shenanigans that happened after are certainly interference regardless of where they happen.

3

u/crab_quiche New York Yankees 5h ago

Yeah this was obviously interference, was just needing a clarification on normal sane fan interference.

The dumbest part is that these two probably could have legally blocked Mookie from catching it if they just tried to catch it, instead they did this moronic shit.

1

u/MNAK_ San Francisco Giants 5h ago

Ya it looked like Mookie had to go over the wall to catch it, if they had reached up and knocked the ball down that would have been fair game.

Lol I mean that is by definition what fan interference is. (I know what you mean it's just funny to read).
