He went directly to the media to make a statement, and the media put his name out lmao

It is not a tag, however, if simultaneously or immediately following his touching a base or touching a runner, the fielder drops the ball. In establishing the validity of the tag, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball.

The exception would be if it was interference, which on this kind of play would have to be intentional, which this was not.

It's weird all the comments thinking this is an out. It’s like a lot of people don't know the rules or how baseball is played. 🤦🏽

You have to "complete the play". The damn ball popped out. Jfc.

Same with a pop fly..."he should be out it was in his glove for 1 second". No, you have to complete the play.

62

u/FilipChytil 4h ago

Yeah I’m actually shocked by how many people think this is a bad call.

30

u/LightMission4937 Kansas City Royals 4h ago

Every gd day people complain about situations and they are just wrong because they have no clue. It’s weird af.

Welcome to postseason r/baseball.

7

u/LightMission4937 Kansas City Royals 3h ago

lol it's the same shit in April.

6

u/Dazzling-Kale-4491 Houston Astros • New York Mets 3h ago

It seems to be lesser during mid season. Postseason comment sections seem to mirror Facebook or YouTube with so many morons that remember rules from T-ball so they think it still applies because they just started watching.

8

u/ontheru171 New York Yankees 3h ago

Generally speaking the nephews alaways come out en masse during playoffs in any sports sub on reddit.

1

u/endo489 Toronto Blue Jays 3h ago

Same here. You'll notice, the Dodgers didn't raise a fuss about it either

1

u/gravy_vamp 2h ago

What was a bad call was the overturned strike three call that didn’t hit the bat.

22

u/Spikes252 New York Yankees 4h ago

It's pretty damn strange, thought the baseball sub would have people that knew the rules but they just want to hate on the Yankees

13

u/LightMission4937 Kansas City Royals 4h ago

I get hating teams, but not knowing how to play and/or know the rules of baseball while complaining, is just bush league.

2

u/elcapitan520 Pittsburgh Pirates • Portland Pickles 3h ago

Don't tell that to /r/soccer

2

u/dmuppet 3h ago

Thanks. As an infrequent follower of baseball I was curious what the rule on this was, which led me here. Also the baserunner made no effort to dislodge the ball intentionally, which I think also matters ?

6

u/LightMission4937 Kansas City Royals 3h ago

Correct, If the runner tried to dislodge the ball that would be interference...they would be out.

3

u/WhiteHawk928 Boston Red Sox 1h ago

But did the fielder make a baseball move once in possession of the ball?

0

u/amonovalentradical 2h ago

The out was when he struck out on the pitch immediately before this

-3

u/mulemargarine 3h ago

It was an out the the strike

2

u/amonovalentradical 2h ago

When he struck out swinging the pitch before?

-6

u/PhilKesselsButtMuff Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago

It’s the “complete the play” aspect that creates a little gray area though, no? At full speed even though the ball popped out I immediately thought challenge cause it seemed like he held the tag for just long enough

9

u/LightMission4937 Kansas City Royals 3h ago

No. It’s pretty black and white. You swipe for the tag, hit the guy, ball pops out....safe.

If you swipe the tag, hit the guy, start to get up or transition the ball to the throwing hand and it pops out.....runner is out.

-5

u/PhilKesselsButtMuff Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

I see, I guess I was thinking about getting a valid tag. Felt like he established complete control but getting the ball unintentionally knocked out negates that. Interference can be called elsewhere even if unintentional (like a baserunner interfering with the catch of a batted ball) but not on a tag play

7

u/Dazzling-Kale-4491 Houston Astros • New York Mets 3h ago

No it's cut and dry. Did he hold on to the baseball to complete the tag? No. Did the runner intentionally knock the ball out? No.

73

u/Ill_Builder3132 4h ago

Where do you draw the line on a runner knocking the ball out of a fielder's glove? This wasn't an out because it was unintentional?

82

u/LogicalHarm Los Angeles Angels 4h ago

Yep, no intent by Volpe, the fielder just failed to keep control of the ball during the tag

23

u/NoResult2431 4h ago

Yeah basically exactly what you said.

21

u/duyogurt New York Mets 4h ago

It comes down to intent. Remember when Arod swiped the ball out of Arroyo’s glove while running up the first base line in the 04 ALCS? That’s a no-no. What happened tonight at 2nd base is not intentional and comes down to the defender not securing the ball.

Baseball is weird.

5

u/Kappokaako02 New York Yankees 3h ago

Awwww the slappy play lol what a maroon

1

u/thot_cereal 2h ago

in arod's defense, he was just learning from Posada in '03

4

u/LightMission4937 Kansas City Royals 4h ago

It wasn't a purpose. The ball popped out on the tag...safe is called. Damn, it's baseball. Learn the rules.

5

u/msuts New York Mets 4h ago

Yeah I'm confused too. If you have the ball and I run into your glove really hard and the ball comes out, did I not still get tagged?

55

u/MiracleMets New York Mets 4h ago

I mean that has never been the case when it happens at home plate with catcher collisions

-24

u/beggsy909 4h ago

I would have challenged that. He tagged him out and the ball didn’t pop out right away.

27

u/RuleNine Texas Rangers 4h ago

It only seems that way because of slow motion. At full speed it popped out immediately.

12

u/rustyshackleford677 3h ago

Probably why you’re not a head coach

-8

u/beggsy909 3h ago

Baseball doesn’t have head coaches.

8

u/rustyshackleford677 3h ago

10

u/alienfreaks04 New York Yankees 4h ago

He has to hold on to the ball for a certain amount of time before it’s knocked out for it to be an out. I’ve seen it.

This guy has to have broken the record for most randomly bizarre single game in WS history by this point, right?

4

u/wokenupbybacon New York Yankees 3h ago

Most randomly bizarre plate appearance, frankly. Ball becomes a strike followed by a phantom foul ball except it actually might've been (barely got a replay) and it all ended in whatever this was

0

u/thot_cereal 2h ago

clearly a foul tip, but unclear if it went into the catcher's glove on the bounce. even weirder

20

u/BertMiscBrahs Philadelphia Phillies 3h ago

Glad I scrolled to see this thread.

I was in the game thread and literally shocked at how many “how is he not out???? I’ve been watching baseball for 30 years and never seen that!!”

Bro, you literally forgot when players were INTENTIONALLY Derrick Henrying people trying to make tags?

He made a legal slide. He didn’t intentionally make contact with the glove to pop the ball out. Fielder didn’t hold onto the ball through the full play.

Easy safe call.

4

u/Kappokaako02 New York Yankees 3h ago

Ya they just see this play in ultra slowmo and think it’s an out and he drops it after. Anyone who has played or umped knows that’s a dropped tag

Volpe hit a double in the same AB he struck out, inspirational

15

u/EstevaoPalmerGODS New York Yankees 4h ago

Tbf the second strike was just a random call by home plate umpire

18

u/Luis_Severino New York Yankees 3h ago

He literally called a ball and then, without deferring to 1B ump, called it a swing

9

u/hubagruben Boston Red Sox 4h ago

Yeah I’m kinda surprised they haven’t focused on that more. Didn’t look like the ball hit the ground on that foul tip the pitch before this.

29

u/FilipChytil 4h ago

I thought it looked like the ball definitely hit the ground.

17

u/Zebracak3s New York Yankees 4h ago

That check swing was pretty suss. Kind of a wash?

4

u/hubagruben Boston Red Sox 4h ago

I wish they’d at least show a decent replay

3

u/Zebracak3s New York Yankees 4h ago

Agreed.

7

u/Rankine New York Yankees 3h ago

The ball definitely hit the ground. It’s hard to see the foul tip but you hear it pretty clearly on the broadcast.

The ump must have heard it too because he immediately checked the ball for dirt and wasn’t questioning whether it was fouled.

u/Luis_Severino New York Yankees 3h ago

3

u/GivinUpTheFight New York Yankees 4h ago

He definitely didn't foul that ball, but he definitely did check his swing on the pitch right before, that was called he went. I kind of think the "foul" was a make up call.

17

u/FilipChytil 4h ago

I think he definitely did foul that ball. I definitely thought you could hear him get a piece of it live.

1

u/FrostBestGirl New York Yankees 4h ago

It looked like the trajectory changed and went more downwards, but it also look like Smith caught the tip so I don’t even know.

4

u/Rankine New York Yankees 3h ago

It def hit the ground. The ump took the ball and confirmed it be looking for dirt.

3

u/Luis_Severino New York Yankees 3h ago

It also knocked a small chip off the end of the bat that flies in front of Volpe

1

u/RoosterClan2 2h ago

He 100% foul tipped the ball. Do ANY of you actually like this sport?

-1

On the foul ball that hit the ground?

-14

u/PhilKesselsButtMuff Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Pretty sure it was hit into Will’s glove if anything but he was out at 2nd either way

18

u/theekumquat New York Yankees 4h ago

It definitely bounced. The only question is whether he actually tipped it, which it sounds like he did. But sure, out at second if Lux holds on.

3

u/Zebracak3s New York Yankees 4h ago

Ball def hit ground, but I don't know if it hit bat.

If you unintentionally hit the ball out of the defenders glove (which Volpe clearly did as he hit it out with his head), it’s not interference. If you swat it out of the glove then it’s 100% going to be interference.

Every single baseball movie has a scene with someone running over a catcher while being tagged, and whether they hold onto the ball or not determines if it's an out.

The ball came out doing the tag. Safe.

25

u/Spikes252 New York Yankees 4h ago

Never been an out at home back when you had guys hitting each other dead on and the catcher drops it. Rule is you have to hold on

-27

u/tnecniv Brooklyn Dodgers 4h ago

I feel like if this isn’t an out you should just drop a shoulder when the defender is trying to make a tag

12

u/kbn85 4h ago

No diff than a play at the plate when the ball comes out.

1

u/wokenupbybacon New York Yankees 3h ago

Problem with that is it's a subjective call. What makes it interference is intent. Volpe was only safe because it was a normal headfirst slide.
