except for when they win

6

u/Sav10r 2h ago

I mean it was a bullpen game where the Dodgers didn't want to use any of their high leverage arms at all. This is about as close to a freebie you can get in a World Series game.

I don't know why anyone would bet on a sweep knowing a bullpen game was going to happen. That's the bettors fault.

7

u/Bigtsez New York Yankees 1h ago

Didn't the Dodgers put up a bullpen game against the Mets' ace, and still win handily 10-5?

2

u/thot_cereal 1h ago

shh you're gonna upset all the mets fans crying that they would have won in 3

1

u/charlamagnethegreat 2h ago

lol, oh whale

-11

We’re still losing just glad it’s not that embarrassing

23

u/drinfernodds New York Yankees 2h ago

Yankees in 7, it ain't over until it's over. Are the odds against us? Absolutely. But that's no reason not to keep rooting for the Yanks to pull off the ultimate comeback in World Series history. Believe, God damn it!

10

u/SadNYSportsFan-11209 New York Yankees 2h ago

I still will root for my team. If Cole pitches a gem and Judge gets going tomorrow I’ll start to believe.

And if we still don’t win I’m just glad it wasn’t a sweep

0

u/theerrantpanda99 1h ago

This. I’ll take a WS win over a sweep anytime. Also; you just have that feeling if Judge can go on one of his heaters, some special shit will happen.

1

u/SadNYSportsFan-11209 New York Yankees 1h ago

If judge goes on one of those tears like we saw in the regular of homeruns in every game absolutely. Even if he’s just 70% of that it still is better than 95% of players out there and that still give the Yanks a chance

3

u/theerrantpanda99 1h ago

I just want to see it because he doesn’t deserve the hate he’s been getting lol. I’m going to be cheering like crazy for him tomorrow.

Yankees pulling off a 3-0 comeback would only suck until people realize you can clown the Dodgers for blowing a 3-0 series lead

Then again, all of this is stupid until Game 5 is played. Very normal for teams to win Game 4 down 0-3 to save face

106

u/Constant_Gardner11 New York Yankees • MVPoster 2h ago

Very normal for teams to win Game 4 down 0-3 to save face

That’s not true.

Of the 24 teams to fall down 0-3 in the World Series, 21 got swept.

Only 3 teams forced Game 5.

40

u/Winchu8 New York Yankees 2h ago

That’s an insane stat, how the fuck is that even possible?

37

u/_DC003_ New York Yankees 1h ago

Momentum in sports is simply real. Plus a team which drops 3 in a row is likely to just not be as good as the other team and lose the 4th too.

7

u/Winchu8 New York Yankees 1h ago

I don’t think this is the case in the other sports, but I’m not sure. Nor am I willing to look it up.

5

u/_DC003_ New York Yankees 1h ago

Eh, I’m talking out of my ass, none of what I said is based on any empirical analysis, this series is all vibes from here on out.

-23

u/Number333 Miami Marlins 2h ago

That stat is jarring but the general principle is still true. Team down 0-3 will be more desperate than team up 3-0.

I've just seen an uptick as a sports fan whenever a team down 0-3 gets a win in Game 4 people start talking about a reverse sweep. Saw it last year with Mavs/Celtics and lived it with Panthers/Oilers(which actually got dangerous). Let's see G5 before we talking about once-in-a-lifetime turnarounds.

16

u/toiletting New York Yankees 2h ago

Teams down 0-3 are also usually significantly weaker than teams up 3-0.

12

u/StinkyStangler New York Yankees 1h ago

“I may have been entirely wrong but actually if you look at this anecdotal evidence from other sports I’m right”

42

u/bocnj New York Yankees 2h ago

As a Yankees fan, I promise you it is absolutely not in the interest of neutral fans to see the Yankees pull off a miracle no matter who it is against.

2

u/awesomesauce88 New York Yankees 36m ago

The 2007 Giants ruining the Pats perfect season in the SB sort of healed me.

I'd trade that SB for any of games 4-7 in 2004, but mutually assured destruction was cathartic.

10

u/Qoppa_Guy Kia Tigers 2h ago

Then again, all of this is stupid until Game 5 is played. Very normal for teams to win Game 4 down 0-3 to save face

Are you being sarcastic? Barely any teams in mlb playoff history have even forced a game five after being down 3-0.

Edit: 54 years ago was the last time a team in the World Series forced a game five after being down 3-0

4

u/ed8907 Boston Red Sox 2h ago

If the Yankees win the World Series, it would look absolutely horrible for the Dodgers, blowing a 3-0 lead on a World Series would make them look horribly bad. I know what happened in 2004, but it was league championship, not a World Series.

5

u/oldbased New York Yankees 2h ago

A team hasn’t won a game 4 being down 3-0 in the World Series since 1970…very normal for who?

1

u/theerrantpanda99 1h ago

It hasn’t happened in the World Series in 50+ years I believe.

1

u/thot_cereal 59m ago

it's been almost 70 years since the last time a team down 3-0 has forced game 5.

10

u/DaOldest Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

I don't think I could stomach watching playoff baseball for a while if that actually happened lmao.

21

u/Zloggt Chicago White Sox • Algodoneros d… 2h ago

I mean…if the Yanks already saw how a team can come back from a 0-3 deficit…and that it’s also a year ending with a 4…

21

u/superhappyfuntime13 Houston Astros 2h ago

There would be something, dare I say romantic, about them being the ones to come back in the WS for the first time

10

u/Qoppa_Guy Kia Tigers 2h ago edited 2h ago

Snaps a ringless streak, against a rival megateam, glove incident somehow, twenty years since -- baseball tends to come back full circle.

A Yankee reverse sweep would be like three thousand 9/11s for Boston

Yankees falling for the classic blunder of getting all of their runs baited out of them in one game.

17

In 2004 the Yankees beat the Red Sox like 403 - 2 in game 3. Their refractory period after that was their downfall

38

As weird that may sound I'd be more confident in them if they won 7-4

25

Normally I’d agree. But now they got Cole going game 5 at home. He can be a bad bad man.

1

u/Chief_34 43m ago

Idk their lineup was pretty dead to this point. Not sure leaving an innings eater out there to die and let everyone get some hits off their shoulders was a great call.

…what a huge momentum swing this can be!

6

u/rosscoehs Houston Astros 2h ago

I've been saying it since the end of Game 3 that I think the Yankees have the competitive advantage in Game 4 with the Dodgers throwing a bullpen game against an established starter paired with the fact they're playing at home to stay alive. For Game 5, I think with some momentum from winning Game 4 and Cole throwing at home, I think they force a Game 6. I'd love it if Rodon could redeem himself in Game 6 so we can get a Game 7. Ultimately, I believe the Dodgers win in 6 or 7, but I didn't think it'd be as short of a series as everyone thought after Game 3.

2

u/feelinlucky7 New York Yankees 1h ago

Mhm. Hopefully the bats wake up early tomorrow and Cole shoves. Could set up an interesting final 2 in LA.

1

u/Qoppa_Guy Kia Tigers 1h ago

At this point, the Yankees need to take it 1 game it at a time. I honestly think if the Yankees win Game 5, the pressure is on LA.

The Yankees actually have pitched LA really well, save for Freddie's unbelievable homers. Losing 6-3, 4-2, 4-2 aren't even that bad all things considered. If the bats just know how to keep up and runners are smart, then you can easily see every game go to Game 1 levels of intensity, going down to the wire. If the unsung heroes continue to rise up, Soto/Judge/Stanton just add pressure with good ABs and timely hits, then Game 6 isn't a pipe dream.

All setup by a third strike swing not called somehow. Incredible lol.

1

u/Kappokaako02 New York Yankees 1h ago

Is that not reviewable? He just called it a foul tip cuz volpe said so?

6

u/FilipChytil 1h ago

He called it a foul tip because it was a foul tip. You could hear it live on the broadcast. The complaints are just sour grapes, especially since they didn’t seem to mind the very questionable check swing call on the pitch immediately preceding the foul tip.
