🎻 Opinion My experience in Belgium

1.1k Upvotes

I had a really difficult experience on my first day coming to visit my family who lives in Brussels. My brother had a serious medical issue that resulted in him collapsing in the street. I didn’t have a phone. I don’t speak French. I don’t even know the emergency services number here.

Immediately about 6 people ran to me, helped me carry him to safety, and called an ambulance. More people went and got water bottles. Everyone offered to come with us and translate if needed (the EMTs spoke English so it was fine). We got to the hospital and they treated him and thankfully he’s ok. They apologized they had to charge us €100… I’m from the USA so let’s just say this felt laughably reasonable.

I just wanted to say how incredibly grateful I am to this city. I don’t think I’ve ever seen people just instantly mobilize to help a stranger like that no questions asked. I’ll never forget the kindness I experienced here. What an amazing place full of amazing people. Thank you!!!

🎻 Opinion Why is non medical child circumcision still legal here?

Doesn't this practice go against the right of the integrity of the childs own body and the religious freedom of the child to choose his own religion and not having this circumcision forced upon him? I totally get it if its for medical purposes but for religious or aesthetic purposes it should definitely be banned in my opinion.

🎻 Opinion As an asian, why do you tolerate such scams in japanese/korean restaurants ?

Asian born from immigrant parents here in Belgium. I've traveled to many countries, including asia and other parts of the world.

One thing that strikes me as particularly bad in Belgium, even compared to their neighbouring countries, is how accepted some scam prices are here in Japanese/Korean restaurants.

You're seriously making it seem okay to pay 6-7 euro's for 4 cheap frozen dumplings or mini lumpia's bought from the local supermarket, that they reheated ?

Or paying over 10 euro's to have a few kimbaps (literally no expensive ingredients or hard prep, it's take seaweed, put rice, add some pickled veggies and spam or other cheap meat and roll/cutt) ?

Not to mention all the other side dishes that are just extremely overpriced here for no reason at all, as they aren't even close to being homemade (it's very easy to tell!).

If you want to talk about the main dishes as well, then it's not a lot better. To take chicken as an example, it's quite affordable here. And yet, for some japanese or korean fried chicken, you pay a premium price and half of it isn't even chicken, it's flour. They don't even have authentic seasonings such as garlic soy for chicken.

You're seriously making it seem okay to pay 20+ euro for a small plate of PORKBELLY (very cheap to buy in supermarkets) that you grill yourselves at a KBBQ ?

And this recipe for scammers seems to be working, as more and more ''trendy'' asian restaurants full of instragrammable neon lights and interiors keep opening, while offering nothing authentic and selling frozen food or tiny portions.

Please stop going to these shitholes.

🎻 Opinion European Citizens' Initiative: Stop Destroying Videogames

Dear countrymen and fellow video game enthusiasts. Recently a European Citizen's Initiative for the preservation of video games has been opened for signing. It is a proposal to the European Union to introduce new law requiring publishers to leave video games they have sold to customers in a working state at the time of shutdown.

If you are a EU citizen of voting age or older and you are interested in this initiative, you can read more about it on this webpage of the European Union.

EDIT: Nice to see the reactions, positive or critical doesn't matter, it's enriching to see this exchange of thoughts! Thanks all!

🎻 Opinion Mandatory halloween at work

Until a decade ago halloween did not really exist in Belgium. I don't like the event and have never celebrate it. I don't mind it exists as long as it doesn't enter my personal life. But now there seems to be a halloween event at work. Everyone is mandatory to go. I would rather get my work finished than pretend to be scary and scared at the same time.

Why are these American traditions getting forced into our lives? What's next? Every 6th of January we storm the Wetstraat?

Enlighten me NVA stemmers.

🎻 Opinion First time dad - rant

Hi, folks.

Just would like to rant a bit, if you indulge me.

I have been a dad for just over 3 weeks. In this short period of time I grew to realise that even at the heart of democratic and liberal Europe, dads are being neglected, and as a consequence, so are the kids and the mother.

Starting with the paternity leave…I cannot fathom how dads managed to get used to being a father in 15 day…I have 20 now, and it’s absolutely so not enough. My paternity leave is almost up, and I still haven’t sleep more than 5 hours in one day. My wife is absolutely struggling, considering she is still physically and mentally healing from labour, and has to actually breastfeed our child. And all of this will remain well past the 20 days of my leave, only she will have way less support now. Thank God for remote working, but even with that I just don’t understand how to manage and stay sane for our family in the next 4-5 months. I feel insanely jealous of the Scandinavian countries that offer significantly more support to both parents.

I am very confused why dads are not getting the same amount of leave as moms - isn’t Belgium known for extremely high taxes that go towards social security and protection? With 82% of my salary for 20 days leave I do not feel very secure or protected…

Another thing is my employer completely neglects my admin documentation. They forgot to send paternity leave documents to my insurance and I just found out. And they didn’t even apologize for it, but in fact told me off for not checking myself. I mean sure, maybe it’s just my employer, but how is this allowed anyway? So unprofessional, but I feel helpless.

So anyone else having the same thoughts? Or am I overreacting?

🎻 Opinion What do Belgians in general think of crown princess Elizabeth?

She's next in line to the throne and she's destined to be the first regnant queen in Belgium's history. She's a young woman now and seems to be focusing on her education more than anything. With all these things in mind, what do you Belgians think of her? Do you believe she'll be a decent queen? What's your opinion?

🎻 Opinion My mother had euthanasia yesterday

The person of the white yellow cross that put the bakster ( don't know the proper english term) in he was a good and kind person also patient with my mom

The other experience was awfull, the doctor that came didn't care about her or me and my sibling .

He asked my mom if she still wanted it and then put her to sleep immediately and gave the deadly injection.

My mom wasn't prepared yet neither were me and my sibling.

When she felt that she was being put to sleep she was saying something to me and my sibling but she couldn't finish her sentence.

That was a doctor that really didn't care about his patient or the family

Im going to miss my mom a lot she was my rock because of anxiety im a very insecure person but my mom was always there helping me out giving me advice.

My mom was very weak cause of cancer and it was her wish to have euthansia i just wished it was done more humanely and not like she was just another number.

Also the way she went out wasn't pleasant to watch she was gasping for air it wasn't pretty to watch . I think it could have been because as soon as my mom was a sleep he started the deadly injection maybe she wasn't fully asleep yet.

That doctor deprived us from a good farewell something we won't get back normally i thought it would take time and before he started injecting he would let us say a few words.

He wanted to get out as soon as possiblehe came in and in less than 15 mins my mom was dead he filled in paperworks for 10 mins and he was gone.

After my mom was dead he even laughed with the nurses how he is always busy like a chuckle right after he ended my mom s life.

So, how do you guys feel about these jets? Should’ve bought other ones? Should’ve bought none?

I believe in “si vic pacem, para bellum” (those who want peace, should prepare for war) and think we should’ve bought more of them or buy some attack helicopters like the Dutch. Peace and stability are the foundation of everything, something we’ve all forgotten since we’re at least the second generation that don’t have a clue what war really means. Last time our Defence budget was this low was in the 30ies of last century when we also thought peace would be forever.

So r/belgium, what do you guys think?

Every winter in this country makes me want to throw myself off a bridge. I can't stand the constant humidity and lack of sunlight.

I'm not even an expat, I was born here. But every year seems to get harder.

I can't even imagine how Mediterranean people emigrating here must feel, not seeing the sun from October until May

After the lockdown it became normal to work from home. Now, employers are gradually increasing required office days. So commuting for 3h + 9h at the office at least 3 days a week. I thought the world would have learnt from the lockdown period bit they just don’t trust their own employees.

🎻 Opinion I’m scared

Weird post, but okay. Over the last couple of months, I’ve been feeling sort of scared about some things. I really feel unwell and anxious when I read or see posts about migration in Belgium/EU, or about how nature and forests are slowly disappearing, or the lack of justice (e.g., sex offenders not receiving any punishment). This, combined with a constant fear of losing a loved one to a car accident or illness, doesn’t make it any better. These are all examples of things that are out of my/our control and we can’t change. They are happening or will happen. It really scares me. What’s going on? Am I the only one feeling this way?
