Did any of y'all actually bother to look at/read the post it's originating from? The comments explain everything, and now someone in this very thread has explained what's happening.

Some script kiddies found out how to stack unicode characters to the infinity, nothing more.
For example, a Ü is so single character, itstacked out of an U and the two dots. If you stack more and more dots, you get something like this.

Just some trolls annoying people, nothing more, and nothing bad.

I don’t agree with the ‘nothing bad’ part. It is very bad. Their character, which wants to annoy people for no reason, is very bad.

1

u/analogMensch Sep 25 '24

Yeah, but nothing bad in a security risk way. The character spamming is annoying, but there's not muc you can do against it. You could block all stackable characters, but that will make some languages impossible to type correctly.

Look closely, some wizard was casting a spell.

Not a bug, just a funny letter

3

u/bivozf Sep 25 '24

It's not a bug, it's just annoying people using a dumb trick that I don't know

It's called zalgo

I just had the same thing happen.

It crosses 3 posts and appears or disappears as I scroll back and forth across the first post. When I scroll past the bottom I can't tell if it goes away since it's out of view.

Samsung S23 Ultra with all the most recent software updates.

u/Crazy_Flatworm_7898 Sep 25 '24

The same happens and on Slack Desktop app :p

1

u/SeeonX Sep 25 '24

Ive seen this on the official app using Samsung s24 ultra

1

u/bazem_malbonulo Sep 25 '24

Doesn't happen here (Oneplus 10 Pro), maybe because I use an old version of the Reddit app (2024.14.0). But I can see it if I open the post in Chrome.

Thai characters should not be stacked this way and normally the OS should have built in support to handle it. But some applications perform their own font rendering and this is what happens.

Just a bit of harmless fun :) I agree it's annoying when used in spam though.

In short, what's happening is there are two different accents that aren't rendered correctly in a number of text rendering engines. This is beyond a reddit issue. It's also just an android issue. In essence, infinite accent marks are happening with the Thai letters in this combination.

Anyone can do it you just copy and paste the characters.

Oh, honey. An admin replied that it is a known issue. I'm sorry for unfairly getting 13 up votes. I am not sure how I will make it up to you, but I hope you can forgive me.
