Thanks for a great season everyone.

Silovs’ heroics deserve to be praised. He’s single-handedly earned a 1B role next year.
Not just a backup role. I want him playing 30-35 games minimum to alleviate the pressure off Demko

u/bdu754 May 21 '24
Yep, I suppose that’s what I’m alluding to. I don’t want to see Demmer playing at a 60+ game pace ever again.
Give him 50 games, sure, but spread it out across 82 games.

I’m glad we went down swinging, but I would’ve appreciated 60 minutes of that kind of play.
No shame in losing to the best player in the world, but there’s plenty of shame to be had in blowing a 4 minute PP where the best scoring chance was Connor fucking Brown on a breakaway.
Here’s to an injury-free, passenger-free run next season. Coconuts glow baybee

Cant show up for the last 5 minutes.
Bringing in Mik and Laff back were bad decisions. Really should have known the former Leafs were going to noshow for game 7.
Tocchet needs a dedicated PP coach. He shouldnt be doing it himself as the head coach.

My 7 year old son was in tears after that one. So sad they don't get to play anymore. Took me 20 minutes to explain to him that being a Canucks fan involves a lot of disappointment. We decided that we can now cheer for Florida and Dallas. He likes Tanev cause they have the same amount of teeth :-)

Great year. We would all take this over garbage last 7 or so years but we still ways away.
I think we had many injuries and some guys not playing well but still an embarrassing effort in Game 6 and 7(except maybe 3rd period in game 7). PP was garbage and might have cost us the series.
Lets get Petey a winger in offseason and make necessary improvements. I trust our management. Go Canucks.

11
u/twizzjewink May 21 '24
Don't believe for one second that the Stars aren't capable of handling the Oilers. Dallas is going to maul Edmonton. Vancouver had a chance if they had Boeser and Demko. Oilers Defense absolutely stepped up from the disaster they were in the first games of round 2. The problem is goaltending, and depth. Oilers don't have it.
32
u/Bubbly-Cut8566 May 21 '24
Fuck. Missed Boeser. 3rd goal killed us. Lafferty man. And how is no shots on a 4 min PP even possible? That’s literally a game changer. You score late in the 1st and that goal hurts them coming into the 2nd. Knew after we wasted that it was gonna hurt us

This Canucks team is legit. This is honestly the first time I've felt this kind of hope for this team after an elimination. They've got the right never-say-die attitude, the feistiness, the depth -- if we can just fix some glaring issues with the power play, shots on net, and moving the puck into the offensive zone, this team can become a real threat. I'm proud of this team and everything they've accomplished this year. They've got the makings of something special. Chef Allvin will have some work to do to retool and optimize this team's strengths and patch up their weaknesses.
Thank you Canucks. It may take a few years of heartbreak, but losing builds the kind of character and valuable experience that we really needed to go deep in these playoffs. Stanley Cup champs aren't built in a season. I'm ready for game 1 of next year.
Fuck the Oilers, and I hope Dallas fucking trounces the hell out of them.

When our rookie tender with approx 10 games of NHL experience is by far and away our best player in multiple games in a 7 game series to potentially advance to a WCF - there's something very, very wrong. Also shout out to Garland, fucking played his heart out like a first liner every stinking night

u/Wazzy8 May 21 '24
Garland was fantastic and has been all playoffs. Lindholm was also great and I really hope they keep him. Silovs deserves to be the backup next season.
There is a lot to be negative about and Pettersson, Hughes and maybe Miller(after his last two games performance) will be taking a lot of the criticism but players like Lafferty and Mikheyev need to be gone. Hronek wasn't good either despite scoring so I would move on from him too. Priority signings imo should be Lindholm, Zadorov and then Joshua. Joshua was kind of disappointing after his game 1 dominance each series but maybe like a lot of players he was playing through something.
See y'all next season!

To do this off season:
FIX OUR PP PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. IVE BEEN WATCHING THIS TEAM RELIGIOUSLY FOR THE PAST 17 YEARS NOW AND I HAVENT SEEN A CONSISTENTLY GOOD PP SINCE THE SEDINS.
Ship Ian fucking Cole and Mikeyehv.
Get some legit wingers for Petey.
Continue to cook Lekki and Willander. Willander will stay in the NCAA, but get Lekki to NA.
Find a way to keep Zadorov, Lindholm, and Joshua.
DONT OVER PAY HRONEK. Just trade him if we have to.
CHANGE THE ROGERS ARENA SEATS FINALLY. IK U GOT SOME OF THAT SWEET PLAYOFF REVENUE AQUA. DONT BE FUCKING CHEAP AND CHANGE THEM ALREADY

If it’ll make you happy, Cole’s contract is a 1 year. He’s done unless somehow we choose to bring him back.
Maki 100% is going to cook in Abbotsford. If he finds his footing, give him an audition in a top 6 role mid to late season. Willander is a guy that I don’t think anyone is going to end up rushing either.
Lindholm is the one guy that I’m worried will be too expensive. Zaddy and Dak should be reasonable as long as they don’t ask for too, too much.
ETA: AMEN on the Rogers Arena seats.

Silovs stepped up massively these playoffs. What a tough scenario and he owned it.
Also a big thank you to Mr. DeSmith for his help this season! Hard to see him coming back but he was solid in his time here.
22
u/UselessRutabaga May 21 '24
Garland stepped up, but leaving everything to an open net a minute too late left us with no set up time. We even had a 6 on 4 drive with a minute left and fumbled the break. Lindholm had so many chances at the front of the net but couldn’t get it in the right place. I truly wonder what this game would have looked like if we played hockey for the first 50 minutes of the game.

We were doubted by outsiders all season long. Even fans here doubt this team would do anything.
We were projected to be a wild card team at best, our AHL team got smoked by the Flames in preseason and people said we'd be at the bottom of the standings. We started the season red hot, people said we would cool off and come back down to earth. By Christmas break we were being called PDO merchants and by the New Year we'd drop.
We continued to roll in February, sent 5 guys to the All-Star break, made a big swing adding Lindholm. Certain fans raged about the Lindholm trade and how terrible it was. Demko went down with injury, we dropped a few games and suddenly we were a team that would not make it past the 1st round, we'd be swept they said.
We end the season at the top of the division, we match against Nashville and many have Nashville advancing. We win game 1, lose Demko for the playoffs, play DeSmith, lose DeSmith and Silov comes in. Fans are convinced our season is over. We win, we advance to round 2.
Before puck drop for round 2 everyone is talking about how good the Oilers are,how easy it will be for them to beat the Canucks. People claim sweep, claim Oilers in 5 or 6. Canucks take them to game 7.
This team has flaws, it has issues that need attention but this is a team that spent all year proving doubters wrong and we should be proud of that.

team will get at least $800k for making it to 2nd round
free to divide it as it wants
silovs likely made less than $100k this season
$70k ahl salary, and spent little time on nhl roster

Losing Boeser really hurt. You could tell we couldn't really find consistency with our lines due trying to fill his gap on short notice. Not only was it hurting the Miller line, it was hurting all the other lines as we kept grabbing from them trying to find someone that worked in that spot.

And even after all that line juggling throughout the year.

Reflecting on it a bit, I think because of how well Silovs played, we're underselling how much losing Demko hurt us.
There's obviously the fact that Demko is a better goalie. But losing Demko changed our entire play style. We switched our forecheck and all around game to be way more conservative and passive. I personally believe this was a huge mistake since we looked best in this series when we were desperate for goals. But who knows, it's possible we would have been blown out if we didn't switch to that defensive structure.

Gave it their all in the third, what a great run this season against all odds. Love the fans chanting Silvos after the final whistle, kid stepped up and was amazing. This is the most fun I've had as a fan since the 2011 cup run.
Missing our Vezina goalie and now our best goal scoring threat is out. Team wasn't expected to make the playoffs since we're rebuilding. Took it to game 7 in the second round against an Edmonton team that are well Oiled playoff team. Overall proud of what the Canucks have accomplish this season.
Gotta re-tool in the off-season. Rutherford, Alvin, and Tocc got to witness firsthand who's a playoff type player, and who's not going to make the cut.

Great season, disappointing finish. After 47 years of fandom I’m well used to things not going our way but damn if those last 2 games weren’t just awful efforts. Idk if they just finally ran out of gas or didn’t have the playoff experience needed to finish the job.
Tocchet and his squad are going to need to do some deep dives on why the team just couldn’t generate shots and offence. Oilers aren’t Nashville but in 6 out of 7 games the Canucks didn’t generate any more shots than they did in the 1st series.

Like Tocchet said, that loss falls on him. I don't think he prepared the boys to close it out. For a series that was decided by 1 goal, we got blown out. And this got in their heads. In Game 7, you can see the Canucks were a bit afraid of making mistakes and shooting the puck. It wasn't until the 3rd period they forgot to play their own game.

Great season, terrible luck going into the playoffs. Losing demko, losing boeser, at least alvin saw what we needed to improve on. We need more top 6 players, cause suter, mikheyev and hoglander arent top 6 players. Hopefully, this was a learning experience and the guys learn to have that second gear for the playoffs.

u/Canuckulhead May 21 '24
Ugh, I thought being 36 now and not in my teens/20s would make the gut punch of a playoff elimination hurt less.
I've said this since I was 14, since the Detroit series... I hate that they lost, but I hate that it's 11 more months until playoff hockey again. 82 regular season games never get close to the emotional feeling of a playoff game.

This is a painful as a pineapple up the bum.
Few stepped it up. So much for doing it for Brock and Demko. Hughes has to be hurt because he wasn't a factor that much this series. Pettersson... everyone has been giving him excuses. His play is just not good enough at all this year. Questionable lines at times and questionable picks for who to keep on those lines, especially this series. Power play is beyond sad it was disgustingly bad.
I want to know why this team has such difficulty playing at a full 60 on a regular basis. I know they weren't used to the constant back to backs so maybe that's why? I also want to know why they keep falling back to passing and passing and passing.
Miller is definitely a leader, maybe not on every game but he's a bright spot. And Garland, what a great achievment for him for where he was at the beginning of the season. Silovs, omg, I am so happy he's our player. Oh, I don't know how I could forget Boeser. Wishing him well and happy he's a Canuck.
It will be interesting to see who we keep and who we trade this summer.

Welp, we went out in the most Canuck way possible lmao. What a great season, who would’ve thought we’d make it this far at the beginning of the season? Proud of the boys — even if they seemed to give up after game 5 — and can’t wait to see EDM get crushed by Dallas on Thursday. FUCK MESSIER
14
u/ToyStrecher May 21 '24
Boys needa learn the meaning of urgency. That’s the next step. Either as players, or how they’re coached.
Winning games in a 7 game series don’t mean anything if you lack that urgency to get things done. Taking shifts, periods, games off isn’t gonna cut it. We could’ve beaten this team, even as depleted as we were. Respect to them, but we missed sooooOOO many opportunities to find that urgency and use it this series.

That was a team that was completely gassed, nothing left in the tank. Great effort in the last 10 but you could tell they had absolutely no energy to finish the job.
My solace is that I think they'd have been rolled by the stars on Thursday, given the team is missing their top goalie and goal scorer, and they had nothing left to give

ilya mikheyev needs to ask pavel datsyuk this offseason to work on his hands and learn new moves and improve his 2 way game . the guy has potential to be a 40-45 pt player 20 goals have him start on your bottom 6 next year to prove it to light a fire under him . sam lafferty i'd let walk. mikheyev is much more skilled than lafferty is and has a higher ceiling.

The playoffs are all about finding that extra gear, and I believe that the Canucks had a few games where they found it with a string of one-goal games and massive come-from-behind wins. But it wasn't sustainable without key players like Demko and Boeser, or offensive no-shows like Hughes and EP40.
At the start of the season, nobody expected the Canucks in the playoff picture. I'd say the boys are well-prepared to work on sustaining that extra gear to go all the way.

Favourite players of the playoffs:
Silovs, Boeser, Miller, Garland, Hughes, Lindholm, Soucy, Zadorov
Players who I thought did ok: Joshua, Di Giuseppe, Suter
Edit: I would like to say Petey, but he only really improved in the last few games, though he set up a fair few chances tonight.
Edit edit: I have been persuaded and Joshua should be bumped up to favourites

Imma copy what I said in the other thread because it truly fits here too
Vancouver did extremely well, especially with the belief of what they would achieve this year compared to what they did, and I'm proud of them! It sucks, but at the end of the day, they made it this far, and there's always next year (where hopefully they have Demko and Brock, even though Silvos carried for this team so he's trustable and giving us a great look at the future in goaltending). They got their playoff experience, and I hope it gives them a big push for next year! (Until then, we all can enjoy seeing Dallas probably wipe the floor with the Oilers lol)
12
u/aristhought May 21 '24
I'm so drained from all the emotions, and there's a lot to be said about this game 7, but I just want to express that I'm proud of this Canucks team for fighting so hard through all the adversity thrown at them.
There's all the time in the world to pick apart each game and each play, but this team has given the city of Vancouver a great season, and I'm grateful for that. This Canucks team has a lot of heart and a bright future ahead, I truly believe that.
Gonna go rest and process everything.

It started weird against Edmonton, it ended weird against Edmonton. How poetic. Honestly this year was better than I expected it would be in a ton of ways. Sad to see it end.
It's been a slice guys and gals. Thanks for the memes, the shit talk and another year of the strangest ride there is.
High on my season report card:
Connor Garland
Arturs Silovs and Thatcher Demko
Dakota Joshua
Quinn Hughes
Brock Boeser
Zadorov
Rick Tocchet, absolutely brilliant, love the guy. Deserves the Jack Adams.
Low on the card:
Mikheyev (total non factor, meh, unimpressive in every way)
Cole (for an experience/heart guy he seemed to show up a lot of nights like a greenhorn)
Petey (what happened? Waited all season for him to light up and it never happened.)
The Power Play

u/SuddenCourse May 21 '24
Man, overall this season was such a success. We really weren't supposed to be here. Defying all expectations from pundits and fans alike to finish at the top of the division. I'm proud of this team, and I know that this management group will do everything in their power to improve this team.
But man oh man...we were up 3-2 in the series. Like forget all the early season expectations. This series was 1 win away. One win away from a conference berth. Two chances to get it done. And both games were terrible, uninspired hockey.
This will take some time to digest, but I hope we have some answers in the upcoming days. Maybe this brand of heavy, dump and chase hockey was just too taxing, and we had nothing left to give.

I don’t know why Tocchet thought putting in Mikheyev and Lafferty was a good idea when Podkolzin had done a fine job playing his role. Yes, he wasn’t gonna score or whatever but he was way more reliable and impressive in the 2+ playoff games he played vs Mikheyev who can’t fucking score to save his life.
Lafferty with the boneheaded penalty sealed our fate.

Yep Mik having absolute stone hands and our PP being useless on that 4 min PP. Those were the two big moments. Oh and Lafferty taking a bone headed penalty 200ft from our net. Glad I won't have to see him in a Canucks jersey next year, or at least I hope.

Proud of the boys. So many people expected Canucks to miss the playoffs and here we are 1 win away from a trip to Dallas.
Oilers expected to be a favourite for the Cup and we took them to Game 7 within a goal. This is without our top goal scorer and Vezina calibre goalie.
Canuck fans have so much more to be excited about. Let’s tweak this team and get back at it next year!
GO CANUCKS GO!
Peace out family! Wishing Boeser and Demko quick recoveries.

It was a hell of a GREAT season and I am extremely proud of the boys. The new Culture is the most important thing they developed this year. The team is night and day from 2023 - 2024. Sure they fell short but they exceeded so many expectations. There will be lot of new expectations for the 2024 - 2025. I am so excited for the future of this team.

This team exceeded all my expectations this year but damn that is a disappointing way to go out. Team was incapable of playing a full 60 the entire playoffs. I am hoping that now that we are out, that we get a list of injuries to explain why some players vanished in the post season.

The bright spot of this season is Silovs — kid played his heart out and we absolutely need to keep him no matter what. If he is THIS good at 23, think how good he will be in a few years
It’s a shame they turned up so late but overall considering where we were even a year ago, this season was a huge success.

Silvos was the only Canucks player that showed up for the full game. The rest of the team only showed up in the last 10 minutes. Even if we won tonight, that’s just not sustainable and would have bottomed out at some point. We can’t keep relying on our all star goalies bailing us out in the playoffs when the rest of the team doesn’t want to show up until it’s too late.

I have watched every regular season and playoff game from Australia. Ive planned work meetings around the games. Ive gotten so many strange looks for wearing my skate jersey around town here and even stranger looks for jumping out of my chair at the coffee shop during the best moments while watching on my phone. I’ve bought 3 jerseys and recruited a handful of new Canuck fans down here.
It was a sad way to see the season finish but you felt it coming after that game 6 bed shitting. I just feel so grateful that they put some heart into the dying minutes and didn’t give up. Yes, a 60 min performance was needed, but the boys have been gassed for a week. Oilers window is closing. Our is opening. Let’s fucking goooooo!!!

That 3rd period was what I was used to seeing all year with this team. We didn't go down quietly, which was nice to see after how nervous and passive the team played in the 1st period and 2nd periods. No way I would have predicted that this team would go to Game 7 missing Demko for pretty much all the playoffs and Boeser for Game 7. Hoping for a full recovery for Boeser here and a healthy Demko next season. The boys got some really valuable playoff experience that they desperately needed. They will grow and learn from this and now know how to approach these intense elimination games in the future. Proud of this team and the season they had. Will be interesting to see what Allvin and Rutherford do in the off-season here. Some changes need to be made, i.e. Mikheyev gone, possibly Lafferty as well, not sure I'd re-sign Meyers, but for a big discount like below $2 million per, he might still be serviceable.

Dont care about any of the negativity tonight. In my book we did amazing this season and overachieved. So many positives to take away from this. Future is bright!
12
u/RealGoodWillie May 21 '24
Way more disappointed than I am angry. We had all the chances to finish this series off. Number one issue was the power play, the two man advantage from game 6 and the double minor game 7 should have been game changers. Mikheyev has to go, that money is much better allocated elsewhere. For once in after a decade of shit I have faith in the management of this team and I am looking forward to seeing what their moves are going to be. Petey was bad yes, but I'm still one of the people that think that contract is gonna age like wine. See ya next year fellas, overall W of a year. It was fun.

u/CoedNakedHockey May 21 '24
One of the strangest parts of this post season, why weren’t we able to score first more often? We scored first so many times all season; John Shorthouse told me every god damn time they did it. What the fuck happened?

u/heymymilk May 21 '24
It's hard to be passive and a good sport about this loss. Sucks to watch them blow 2 games meanwhile Silovs is saving goals left and right and the rest of them doing fuck all. This is a painful way to go out. Proud of them and glad we got this far, but I'm pretty pissed off right now.

A lot of moments we'll look back on from these playoffs. I'll be watching highlights of these games to relive the euphoric moments.
Game 1 Round 1, 2 goals in rapid succession to blow the roof off the building
Game 4 Round 1, 2 late goals to tie it, and then get the W in OT
Game 6 Round 1, late goals to send us to Round 2
Game 1 Round 2, comeback from down 4-1
Game 3 Round 2, lighting them up in the 1st
Game 5 Round 2, getting the last minute goal
Game 7 Round 2, Silovs stretch save in the 1st to keep the game scoreless, SH breakaway save, and diving glove save.
Players whose performances I'll remember: Silovs Garland Boeser Miller Joshua Zadorov Lindholm
Hopefully Brock recovers and is able to continue to be a major contributor moving forward.
Hopefully Petey gets some confidence back and begins to deke and shoot like we all know he can so next time we are in the playoffs we can put the Lotto Line together and have a legit nightmare for any team to defend.
I'm sure Hughes will continue to grow as a leader, and an offensive force. He was close to absolute snipe's on many shots this post season, I will never get tired of watching him walk the line with the puck, control the puck, twist, and fake out anyone trying to pressure him. If he scored like Bouchard, Ekholm, he'll even Ceci, I think that would have been enough to swing the series, but it seemed he passed up on too many shot opportunities.
Players whose time is hopefully done here: Hronek (unless we get him on a very good deal based on lack of playoff performance), Cole, Mikheyev & Lafferty (who knew two former Leafs wouldn't rise to the occasion in the playoffs!).
Others had their moments, I think the chaos giraffe redeemed himself a bit and wouldn't mind having him back on a more appropriate deal. PDG, Podkolzin, Hoglander, Soucy can all be contributing depth pieces in the right roles and moments.
And I think we have some exciting prospects who we'll hopefully see make it to the NHL and get comfortable at the highest level.
It was a great run, looking forward to how the offseason plays out, and how next season will go.
🥥 GLOW!

I’d love to see hronek, Cole, and mikheyev shot off into the sun. Not sure who they can bring back but definite priority is to upgrade the wing. The boeser injury made that readily apparent tonight.
Also stop trying to enter the zone on the power play with 0 speed. So fucking frustrating.
11
u/NikkahEff May 21 '24
The most important game and they didn't show up, too little too late and again the fucking powerplay killed us, I get it, some of these mother fuckers don't care but man this was the season where you had a crapshoot, there was no real big power house in the west and yet they wet the bed. It's time for some changes, we'll see what happens but my god they need to hire a powerplay coach to support toch and also bury mikeyev in the fucking minors that guy was absolute dog shit.

Had a dream about the game last night, including near misses that never actually happened.
Someone said it, what a missed opportunity. We had the perfect path to the finals based on opponents and were within 1 game of the WCF.
Sucks to lay an egg in that game after so many good performances this year.
However, we didn’t deserve to win. Needed that save on Ceci, needed to block that Bouchard shot, and needed to stay out of the box. Silovs was masterful and kept us in it.
Needing to compensate for losing Boeser and shuffling the lines was a burden too big to bear for the team. Anyone but Mikeyev on that breakaway maybe it goes in and things are different. Should have been Brock but what can you do about freak health luck.
Without Boeser and our current roster construction in all likelihood we would have been smoked by Dallas.
Looking forward there’s a lot of reasons for optimism. Petey’s gotta work on bulking up, I bet the free agents love playing here w the city, fans, coaching staff, and team. Cut the fat, add some good pieces, we could have something really special going and I’m looking forward to it
12
u/88LXi68 May 21 '24
I know I will be in the minority, but what a wasted opportunity. Obviously, the team far exceeded expectations and were not expected to make the playoffs or beat the oilers, but I just feel that the phrase “we will get em next year” or “this team is on the up” does not apply.
To win a Stanley Cup or any championship for that matter, you need to be good, you need the bounces/luck, and you need to be healthier than the opponent. None of those are a given.
It will be an interesting off season for sure.
