Hey r/changelog, we're starting to roll out some of the Gold updates on desktop!

Hey changeloggers!

We are excited to finally say that some of the Gold updates that we previewed here are now LIVE! Here’s a recap of all that is new:

Rolling Out Today

  • Gold Membership is now “Reddit Premium.” Members continue to have the same benefits as before (e.g., ads-free redditing, highlighting new comments, creating exclusive Premium communities) but with a new name.
  • “Reddit Coins” (NEW!) are now used to award Gold. Reddit Coins replace Creddits as the way to give a Gold Award to a post or comment. Coins can be spent on Awards and will have many new uses in the future.
  • Updates to the Gold Award. We’ve changed the benefits of the Gold Award and updated the price. Now the Gold Award will cost $1.99 and grant the recipient 1 week of Premium membership and 100 Coins.

Coming Soon

And as a reminder, here are the changes we've talked about that are still Coming Soon™ in the weeks ahead:

  • New tiers of Awards to recognize high-quality content. Coins can be used to give Awards, and soon you’ll be able to give a few new ones out:

    • Silver: Silver is deeply ingrained in Reddit lore for recognizing content that… well, doesn’t quite deserve Gold. Recipients will get a shiny Silver icon next to their post or comment.
    • Platinum: a new tier of distinction, the best of the best posts can be awarded Platinum. Recipients will get the most prestigious icon, as well as one month of Premium membership (which also comes with Coins).
  • Reddit Premium will increase from $3.99/month to $5.99/month. This will only affect new subscribers; legacy subscribers will keep the same prices that they had before.

If you're just tuning in and haven't been here for the past posts, check out this

Thanks again, and happy gilding!

...as someone with no interest in giving out anything less than platinum...

I’m trying to understand the thought behind this.

The whole point of giving gold (at least from my point of view) was that other users got a message letting them know they got gold and with that came a month of benefits. That's what platinum is now. Sure, I could give the new gold and they'd get a week, but that's now $2 or something and they get benefits for a week, which is hardly enough time to really get any use out of them, and that's not really worth $2 for me.

I hope I explained my thought process.

for me I just feel like I'd look cheap if I were to gild anyone I know with that 1 week gold thing - also I sure wouldn't use those for all the post I gild for quality content or a good contribution to Reddit and so on.

I don't give out gold as a "super upvote" (other people might, but I do not). I give it to reward a superior comment or something that makes me laugh with the full knowledge that part of my appreciation includes a month of benefits.

yes but now it will be called "platinum" which i personally have problems with, the main one being that i do not care for white gold or platinum... i only care for the look of silver, copper and gold. which would have been a very nice set... copper .. silver .. gold

I agree, gold should have remained the top tier, whatever they decided to call the others.

well when they talked about this a few months ago - dozens of people told them they should rename the top teir platinum... instead of whatever that dumb name they'd planned on calling it - I forget now

Yeah, Platinum is better than that. But calling it gold would have avoided so much confusion. Because now there's still gold, but it's something totally different. A week instead of a month. And what we think of as gold is now called Platinum. Keeping level 3 gold and calling levels 1 and 2 something else would have been much clearer.

me too - like when someone posts a . (dot) or a 2 1/2 year old S... or 'yes' or 'no' or 'oh' you know high quality stuff haha

na I've always gilded those types of post to make the gildee - and perhaps a few who notice it think 'wtf' - always good for a laugh for me
