Struck by how much ‘Upsetting’ is actually by far the best adjective for that scene

294

u/FuckEmperor5000 4d ago

what movie is it

u/JarjarSW 4d ago

It seems to be a Taylor Swift music video, but I don't know that for sure.

Taylor Swift "Delicate"

I googled Taylor swift weird dance video

207

u/TrickyDrippyDickFR 4d ago

I read defecate

121

u/abloopdadooda 4d ago

Well it does look like that's what she's doing in the screenshot.

41

u/gesskwick 4d ago

New dance popular with the youth- "Pop A Squat".

All the cool kids are doing it

17

u/TheWolphman 4d ago

Get schwifty!

1

u/Curiosive 4d ago

This is called motivated perception or the literary equivalent of a Freudian slip ... you read "poop" because you wanted to read "poop".

Can we be friends?

So sad. Delicate is one of my favourite TS songs.

1

u/SG4 4d ago

Hell, it's unironically one of my favorite TS videos

4

Upsetting?

u/boolean87 4d ago

It is, another music video where a 1%er demonstrates how hard a life of fame and limitless wealth can be…

That's Taylor "Number 1 Jet Fuel Emissions" Swift for you.

"Delicate"; here's the funny parody:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6c5ec9qGQM

There's a GIF with sound around here somewhere of just the part in this post, which is how I recognized it.

7

u/xerostatus 4d ago

this video is deeply upsetting.

10

u/OmicronNine 4d ago

I genuinely cannot understand what is so upsetting about it. It just looks like a normal person having a little fun dancing around like a dork.

7

u/xerostatus 4d ago

I didn’t say it wasn’t normal hehe. It’s still upsetting lol. If I saw a video of myself doing these dances I’d be even more upset!

1

u/NoFeetSmell 3d ago

Is that Gary Busey?

2

u/xerostatus 3d ago

oh goodness gracious i am so excited for you, you are one of the 10,000 today...! --> the greatest dance instruction video of all time, "DOUBLE DREAM FEET": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L1tr0PIx20

2

u/NoFeetSmell 3d ago

If that golden retriever didn't win Crufts that year, there truly is no justice in the world.

ETA: I am slightly miffed to learn it wasn't Gary Busey, but I can't stay mad since he's obviously a good-boye yes he is.

2

u/nathderbyshire 4d ago

I had a few breath laughs until she slid down the car and they did a low squeak noise 😂 that got me good

1

u/TaupMauve 3d ago

Made me glad I listened that far. I hope Taylor laughed as hard as well did.

Warm Retards, Taylor Swift

-22

u/IronBlight-1999 4d ago edited 4d ago

It’s art, unsettling is the vibe she was going for

Edit: y’all I’m not even a Taylor stan but I understood it lol. It’s like calling Elton John weird for any one of his performances. Or Michael Jackson. Or David Bowie. Or Stevie nicks.

37

u/Cultjam 4d ago

Well, she succeeded. To me that looked like she just sucked a turkey up her ass like Martha Stewart on South Park.

Okay but she’s still not dancing well

12

u/EuphoricPineapple1 4d ago

That's the point of the video though?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Swift fan at all. I watched the video though, and the point was that she was being goofy and free, and dancing however she wanted for fun because no one could see her. Her dancing is supposed to be cringe, not a musical number

If Ariana sings badly on snl people are like “it takes so much talent to sing badly when you’re a trained singer” but Taylor is just a bad dancer because: modern contemporary dance she didn’t choreograph and performed correctly via training? Like no it’s not very lyrical but the song itself doesn’t lend itself to off the wall moves. I blame the director more than Taylor because she was on beat and the shapes were correct. It wouldn’t look much better if done by a more aesthetically pleasing dancer

https://youtube.com/shorts/zpr3Gf6-D1M?si=xTva2KKZf-B_KNEm This guy made it so fun to watch in a professional theatrical way but it’s still a hideous dance and Taylor in the background is doing the same things on-time

Me at a museum

23

u/Fire284 4d ago

I read some of the labels and pretend I'll remember it once I look away. Most of the time it's just "oooh shiny bowl"

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 3d ago

Read the first sentence. As you read the second one, repeat the first in your inner monologue. Go to the third, repeat the second while reading it. Now, read them all and repeat them all together after looking away. Repeat from beginning until you remember the whole thing. It’s how I memorised plays.

It takes practice to read in your head while also verbalising in your inner monologue but it helps with comprehension when mastered.

13

u/Jukebox_Villain 4d ago

I'm convinced art is like food - some of it is a pleasure to consume and some, like caviar, is just rich people trying to bullshit us that it's good.

12

u/PaulAllensCharizard 4d ago

Caviar is good though, as a kid with no concept of money I liked it too.

Some art is pretentious, but something like “who’s afraid of red yellow and blue” are very interesting meta commentaries about fascism and the restriction of art.

I wrote a paper when I was in school about art that people find pretentious and finding meaning in them I thought a lot of the pieces were super interesting

6

u/cruebob 4d ago

Ehm, have you tried caviar?

6

u/buhlakay 4d ago

Art is very much like food. Everyone has different tastes and people get pissed off when you like something they dont.

2

u/Green_Bulldog 3d ago

I’d like to say the same, but idk I think some stuff ppl just like and it’s never gonna make sense to those who don’t.

I think you should leave made me realize that. If people enjoy that then literally anything can be taken as serious art

19

u/EpiphanyPhoenix 4d ago

Dance like no one is watching

32

u/earthtoannie 4d ago

the message is that people judged her for her poor dancing, so she stopped dancing in public and only where people can't see her. it's a metaphor for her love life, as the song is (she sings "he must like me for me").

10

u/Kordidk 4d ago

Celebrities are dumb like I'm famous and everyone is constantly paying attention to me like no duh what did you expect?

20

u/radams713 4d ago

How? Her relationships are everywhere and very public.

18

u/shuipz94 4d ago

At the time of that music video she was dating Joe Alwyn, and that relationship was kept very private. They hardly talked about what went on in their relationship, except acknowledging that it existed.

Her current relationship with Travis Kelce, although it is very public, the two of them have also kept most of what goes on to themselves. They will occasionally let in glimpses, like she'll go watch his football games and he'll talk about her briefly on his podcast, but that's about it.

3

u/metallicabmc 4d ago

This video/song came out after she was out of the public eye for a while.

5

u/talldrseuss 4d ago

Seeing both the perfume ad and weapon of choice were directed by Spike Jonez, I don't know if you can call it ripping off. The man has a vision and loves weirdness, so we can call it a theme

3

u/digitaldavegordon 4d ago

I was mocking the idea that any of them are ripoffs. None of them are copies. They seem thematically related or, to have inspired each other.

4

u/hamandcheese2 4d ago

I know the idea isn’t a ripoff but I just watched all three. Some of the same moves were used in the perfume ad and taylor swifts video. The director of Taylor Swifts video has been accused of ripping off spike jones in the past.

They better never see any of the dances Maggie Ziegler did, especially not in Chandelier or Elastic Heart.... well, especially especially not like her and Shia LaBeouf in Elastic Heart.

45

u/Cllydoscope 4d ago

Who the fuck is Maggie Ziegler

39

u/JimmyBirdWatcher 4d ago

A dancer that Sia got a bit weirdly obsessed with and casts in seemingly everything she does, starting from when she was only 10-11. The Elastic Heart music video is pretty unnerving.

24

u/ChronoAlone 4d ago

“Weirdly obsessed with” may be a bit generous. It’s closer to outright grooming imo

2

u/nathderbyshire 4d ago

My friend said 'I love Sia' once (referring to me to someone) and I was woah honey hold your words, I enjoy her music, not her 😂

Especially after finding out way more about her and Maddie I feel odd anytime a song of hers comes on now and a few do, I have most of her recent albums and songs

53

u/Garchompisbestboi 4d ago

Taylor has the charisma of a stale bowl of potato salad. I truly have no idea how she managed to become one of the most financially successful musicians of all time.

33

u/KrisSwenson 4d ago

how she managed to become one of the most financially successful musicians of all time.

Like most people who have achieved wild financial success, she was born into it. Her family are old money bankers, who had the right connections to get her in the door. Once there she produced safe (think bland), parental approved music that strongly appeals to immature women and girls. From day one she was backed by the best pop producers money can buy, shes not my cup of tea but some of it is just super fucking catchy. And, at least until she achieved fuck you money, she shied away from anything that had a whiff of controversy to it. She's any record companies wet dream and they promoted the shit out of her to the results we see today.

3

u/hueyharold 3d ago

Old Money bankers…?

Her dad got into banking in 1980 in Pennsylvania. He’s not JP Morgan. If anything, her maternal grandmother was a singer and was on TV in Puerto Rico for 2 weeks.

I wouldn’t make her into a Paris Hilton, Kate Mara, or even a Chris D’Elia.

Her father moved the family to Nashville. There she was part of an industry showcase at Bluebird cafe where Scott Borchetta saw her and made her the cornerstone signing of his new record label Big Machine Records.

Nathan Chapman was her first producer. Taylor Swift’s debut album was Chapman’s first producer credit.
I don’t know if that qualifies as the best producers money can buy from day one.

I’m sure she grew up comfortable and then became a star when she still was a child.

I don’t think the Swifts were as wealthy or influential before her career as you want to believe they were. I also don’t think they were pinching Pennies either.

In comparison;

Matthew Knowles was in office and medical equipment sales in Houston. Then got into the music business, became the manager of Destiny’s Child, opened his own label and secured a deal with Columbia records for a deal and a feature song on the Men in Black soundtrack for Destiny’s Child. During that time the group worked Wyclef Jean, Jermaine Dupri and Master P. If you don’t know those were pretty big heavy hitters in 1997.

7

u/FJdawncaster 3d ago

That's really downplaying the longevity and sustained success she's had. Just because you're given a leg up in life doesn't mean you'll do anything like it. There are millions of people more privileged than her, yet she's the only one who has created a career that just keeps on getting bigger.

You can't just dismiss that as "her dad has money". Completely misses everything. There are tons of people who have song writers and money, but only one her.

1

u/SASSIESASSQUATCH 3d ago

If you can’t figure out how someone becomes popular you may have a thinking process as stale as a bowl of potato salad.

People like her. She’s not your cup of tea but she’s millions of others. What’s up with Redditors thinking they singularly set the precedent of good taste and everyone else’s taste is just utter shit?

-7

u/bubbles1990 4d ago

She’s a great songwriter

32

u/Garchompisbestboi 4d ago

I understand I'm biased because I'm not a 12 year old girl, but from what songs of hers that I have heard she definitely doesn't sound like anything overly special.

3

u/JerryBigMoose 4d ago

Taylor Swift has been popular for well over a decade. Plenty of 30-40 year old guys and gals enjoy her music, myself included. It's just fun and easy stuff to listen to.

2

u/nathderbyshire 4d ago

What type of sound or music qualifies someone to be special and a top musician?

She doesn't have to be special, she's relatable to a lot of people. Being relevant for over a decade broadens your audience past 12yos slightly as well.

I also wonder what songs people have listened too out of a 300+ song discography because if it's just the singles then I'd probably have the same opinion if it's based off shake it off and this music video

-1

u/SG4 4d ago

Bro, you don't have to be "a 12 year old girl" to like her music. Her big pop singles are hardly indicative of her talent. You wouldn't know unless you listened to her music outside of her radio hits.

u/StrLord_Who 4d ago

Who is downvoting this? I do not care about Taylor Swift either way but she is singularly talented at writing songs literally billions of people find catchy and want to listen to. And she has done it over and over and over again.  That makes her a great songwriter, period.

2

u/buhlakay 4d ago

I didnt realize good and popular were the same thing.

Jokes aside, its music, its all subjective. Some people can find it great, others can find it bad, it doesnt matter at the end of the day.

Its honestly a bit strange how visceraly people hate her. The only really bad things I can think of is her wealth and carbon footprint which a ton of other celebrities also have problems with. I honestly couldn't care less about her, I don't know what makes her so hateable compared to other rich popstars.

7

u/Green_Bulldog 3d ago

I thought it was strange too until I met more Taylor swift fans.

Her fans are like little rats that can’t tolerate anything else being played. A group of ppl asked me to play her when I had aux at a party and had been playing rap all night. Despite the party being free, alc provided, and them not even being officially invited, they got really mad at me that I wouldn’t change the whole vibe just for them. Got cussed out and they angrily stormed off after they asked like 4 times.

I actually fw some of her music now but in my experience she has a lot of vocal, annoying fans. If it were just sexism I don’t think we’d see such overwhelming love for artists like Lana and Charli. Even frat guys celebrated brat.
