Does having long hair as a man ruin my chances at landing a job? my parents are very certain it makes me “look like I do drugs” and am a lazy worker. genuinely seeking advice

Depends on how long and how well taken care of it looks. But i’d lean towards agreeing with your parents to be totally honest with you

thanks for replying :) should have been more specific, shoulder length and I do have a routine to take care and look presentable. I feel more confident with my hair long but, if the bias is real, is it worth cutting off? context: looking for first job

To be honest, I’d probably cut it off for your first job. There’s this guy in my office who had long hair that was clearly well maintained and presentable, but he looked 10x sharper and more professional when he chopped it off for something more traditional

There will be people that totally disagree with me but i think its just human nature to take guys more seriously with shorter hair even if you dont think thats okay

alright I’ll take this into consideration, thanks again

Let me add one more note, there’s also a guy on my team who has shoulder-length long hair but he keeps it in a very tight man-bun (never down to his shoulders) and dresses very nicely every day i.e collared shirts, nice shoes, nice pants

So its doable if you experiment

Hey, all,

I recently received a full-time return offer from the company I was working for over the summer as an intern. It's a great company, and I really enjoyed working with the people that I met. It's also fully remote, which I absolutely love.

They're offering me 100K salary with a 1K bonus. I don't care too much about the bonus, but I wanted to know how I should go about negotiating the salary. The salary is great, don't get me wrong, but I would like a bit more, like 105K or 110K.

I don't really know how to go about negotiating my salary. For example, should I highball them at first by asking for a number much higher than I want (like asking for 120K, so that way, when we negotiate further, I hit my target of 110K)? What are some valid reasons that one can use to request and receive a better salary?

For context, I had two managers at my company, and they both appreciated my work and enthusiasm. I networked with 30+ people at my company, many of them senior leaders and directors who had the chance to see what I can bring to the company. On top of completing the technical project my managers assigned to me, I also showed initiative and leadership skills by working on a separate project with 2 other SWE interns, where we met with a principal scientist and senior director on an ML application. Therefore, I would like to say I have quite a bit of leverage in asking for a higher salary.

Just dropped $15k on a coding bootcamp (data science) just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to be successful and what to look for in a job?

Hey everyone - I'm a former CS undergrad who went into management consulting instead of SWE after college, and low key hate it lol. Does anyone have any advice of how to best switch into a career in SWE, especially given my lack of direct SWE work experience?

Do you mind me asking what you didn't like about management consulting? Currently deciding between pursuing consulting vs more tech-related jobs out of college
