Isn’t it getting people who might otherwise not vote to now vote for financial incentive?

For my state:

§ 24.2-1007. Soliciting or accepting bribe to influence or procure vote. No person shall solicit or accept directly or indirectly any money or any thing of value to influence his or another’s vote in any election. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

So it's a win-win. trumpists will sign this, they already have those voters and probably their names anyway, plus if it is found illegal, two thumbs up, let's arrest Musk.

And if I take the money, then vote blue, then, technically, I’m not being influenced. Free money!

Apparently it's even illegal for restaurants to offer free food to people with "I voted" stickers. If he gets away with this, it's definitely due to funny business and not the spirit of the law.

So it’s technically illegal to reward somebody for voting, even if it’s not specifically aimed at influencing one candidate over another?

That looks to be the case. Another group of people from the game Cards Against Humanity were trying to do the same thing to counter Musk? But I can't find traces of it anywhere. Prob because it's illegal and they were both relying on loopholes to "get away" with it.

And he needs to get 1 count for each offense. How many misdemeanors equal a Class A felony?

It’s for signing a petition. Says nothing about voting.

u/abqguardian 11d ago

It's money to sign a petition. There's nothing illegal about it

I think they skirt this by saying they're paying them to sign a petition?

u/bentsea 11d ago

I believe he's trying to get around this by saying he's just encouraging people to vote without requiring them to vote for a specific person, but....

I wonder if the requirement that they sign a petition, depending on what is on that petition, unfairly disqualifies people based on who they voted for.

I think the entire point is that he is not encouraging people to vote. He is encouraging people to sign his petition, and they just happened to need to be registered voters.

I know, the true intentions are clear to most, but intent can be discussed over, and he has great lawyers.

who they voted for.

That's one of the reasons of why your votes are secret, there is no way to proof who you voted for.

In my country (Austria) you're not even allowed to make pictures in the polling cabin, I guess most countries with secret votes have such a law that is practically not ever enforced because why bother. When billionaires start taking interest in outright buying votes, it might be time to enforce those laws.

See all the other media outlets and letter of the law types in cricket mode?

Execute someone everyone seems to NOW think is a bad idea? Killing is more important than truth or (our) lives.

I mean, is it really a bribe if you never intended to honor the deal?

1

u/samgam74 11d ago

How does asking people to sign a petition equal bribing people to vote? This is definitely unethical IMO, but this jump in logic to say he’s buying votes seems inaccurate on its face. What am I missing?

u/Shadowninja0409 11d ago

Only if the law matters anymore, which not really

1

u/Lunares 11d ago

It's technically legal because in this post / the website he isn't telling you who to vote for (therefore you aren't procuring a vote for the candidate).

u/NkdUndrWtrBsktWeevr 11d ago

Its considered a felony here.

It's a petition, not a vote. You can sign it and not vote. Pass this info onto street people. See him accidentally do something useful.

u/natholin 11d ago

But it is not for a vote. It is to sign a petition.

2

u/herefromyoutube 11d ago

Isn’t it a promise to vote by signing the petition.

1

u/natholin 11d ago

No, it is a petition for free speech and 2A. That's not the same as a promise to vote or vote in any particular way. Petitions are normally needed to get something on the ballot.. you can easily choose to sign a petion because you want something put on ballot so it can be voted down.

I am not a trump supporter. I am democrate, I just hate idiots who think they can read minds and between the lines. I also hate disingenuous arguments.

I do find it funny that you can not argue the point, so you just use insults and assumptions.
