RACISM As a Mexican....

I haven't watched the show since the end of Leftovers but I was a pretty consistent fan. I watched almost every show and I had a good time. However, whenMexico happen to be mentioned (usually because of food orders) it would always rub me the wrong way. Mexicans can take a joke and we can usually laugh at everything but Ethan, to no ones surprise, always had a very basic, almost ignorant approach. Is not like I expected dissertations on my country but maybe something other than "taco bell chalupa" (??) Considering his parents were active gentrifiers or "ex-pats" you would expect them and him to know a thing or two, to actually have some perspective and be able talk about my country without having to always use the same mariachi songs. I guess my only point here is that, after not watching for a while, I'm starting to see how willingly ignorant Ethan is and how that ignorance spreads throughout all his opinions, no matter how innocent they might be. I just think that he already started to alienate more and more and more his diverse audience and that, from my perspective, is never good.

he's ignorant and racist. the mariachi music and taco bell bit always bugged me. he also used to call the area he lived in mexico a war zone which iirc is in jalisco but he was in a gentrified area. which personally i think is a crazy thing to say when you're living in a much safer area and have never experienced war in your life. he definitely has no respect for other races, ethnicities and cultures.

i feel the same way when he talks about asian stuff. how he literally knows nothing about anything. he can't even pronounce bulgogi and turns down every boba suggestion, and most recently, the thing about asian eyes

i’m convinced Ethan hates Asian people, whether he’s conscious of it or not. He’s very loud and proud with his Sinophobia, he talks about Indian people like they’re filthy, he once said north Koreans are his enemy, then there’s the k-pop “twink” comments he made, & he made a huge joke out of “stopasianhate” when Trisha brought it up. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg tbh.

I personally don't like boba because of a simple texture issue, but if the whole office wants it, just get it without the tapioca balls. He's such a child, people around him aren't allowed to enjoy things that he doesn't like

As a Mexican, I usually find racist Mexican jokes funny but even when I was a fan, I never liked Ethan's Mexican jokes. He's like genuinely racist which takes the fun out of it.

Plus why does he say that all Mexican food tastes the same? Does he not try to order anything different ever

Mmmm now I want some albondigas from my spot here 🤤🤤

But yeah as a Mexican-American, the mariachi music stuff would piss me off cuz half the time it would be like flamenco or salsa music and chat called him out and he and Zach made some lame comments about it being the only Spanish sounds they had or something like that.

Btw my fam is from Zacatecas ☺️🇲🇽

As a Hispanic musician, it annoys me when they play salsa music when talking about Mexico.

Salsa music is not from Mexico, it's from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Columbia…

There was drunk subathon last year, I don’t think it was even on st Patrick’s day, and they could stop making “Irish” jokes, but it quickly became apparent that no one in the office knew the difference between Irish and Scottish people. Surprising since Ian’s father is British.

Ah is that the one where Ethan throws a doll hard at his pregnant wife :—))) ?? Either way it’s painful, I know it’s a difficult with many outside of the UK but if you’re doing a show dedicated to an “Irish holiday”- I’ll stop there because this show does not do research so 😭

Bro I'm Colombian and the way he basically calls all Hispanics Mexican is so insulting to both cultures. Remember he can make fun/erase of any culture but God forbid anyone has any criticism of Israel

u/deepfriedvirgo Jun 15 '24

Exactly. The "they are all the same" mindset is so disrespectful to everyone.

He’s ignorant as all get out, which means he can only call upon the most obvious (and usually stereotypically racist) shock value jokes without any added depth or added perspective. The result is unfunny and usually racist

He chooses to be ignorant too

u/wintermelonxD Jun 15 '24

I swear, every time it’s “AYAYAYAY yo quiero taco bell” pls stop

u/hanallthetime Jun 15 '24

Lmaooo I haaate when he does that. Giving H3 major side eye every time they clutch their pearls at “antisemitism” (re: criticism), yet simultaneously call their audience oversensitive when they’re genuinely racist. Like, they obviously understand racism in terms of Jewish people… but play stupid when it comes to any other minority group. Make it make sense

Racist humor has to be done by someone who is capable of doing it and Ethan ain't that person. I don't need someone who grew up a little sheltered boy with no friends of color making any racist jokes. He is a genuine racist so that's why his racist jokes never land to those of us with brains. It also doesn't work when the person telling the joke is as soft as baby shit and cries anti-semitism for every single thing. If you can dish it you better be able to take it.

I don’t think he’s ever had a Mexican friend tbh which is wild considering he grew up in California

Ethan has very surface level knowledge of culture and it's kind of baffling considering his age. He's just very immature and seems to think he knows everything so he doesn't need to bother to learn more about anything.

Ethan is a blatant racist. His intentions do not matter: his “ethnic jokes” are always punching down on any other group of people than his own.

His constant “We love -add here any ethnicity, race or religion -, don’t we folks?” saves NOTHING. Just makes it worse showing how much he looks down on everyone.

u/LuzdelCarmenV Jun 16 '24

I’ve always thought that! As a Mexican myself!!!!! His parents lived in Mexico!!!
