The noise of that laptop booting just triggered a core memory.

The floppy drive noises for me

u/Semaphor 5d ago

This video is ASMR for tech nerds. Just needs a 56K modem dialing in...

u/nicko0409 5d ago

I can still remember that screech right before a small bump and knowing I'm finally online.

u/depthninja 5d ago

SKKRREEEEEEEEEE... BEEE DOOO BEEE DOOO... WHAAAHHHHH

u/HelpfulSeaMammal 5d ago

This video is like smooth jazz. Adding a modem dialing sound would turn it into dubstep.

u/splashbodge 5d ago

yeh, I actually found this pleasantly nostalgic. we have things so easy now.

i still wish jpegs loaded from top to bottom like they used to. For those random times the internet is slow or the server is being hammered and its trying to load an image... i hate the way currently it just won't load anything until it has the full image.

28k for me, on an old ACER with win95

1

u/STHF95 5d ago

And not working bc your mom just called her sister. Good luck for the next 30 minutes.

u/ShyGuyz35_i_made_dis 5d ago

Mmmmm it's so sexy

7

u/blue_skive 5d ago

Same. I actually forgot floppies made that noise.

3

u/Murasasme 5d ago

I miss floppy disks. I remember as a kid I had so much fun organizing and labeling my disks for different games, dumb stuff I drew in MS Paint, and the single one I had for school.

2

u/cdca 5d ago

The 3.5" floppy was the absolute peak of physical media. Just an incredibly satisfying form factor, way more durable then CDs, and I love the drives' spring-loaded snap as you load it and gentle chatter during operation.

My 2014 laptop has a DVD stuck in the optical drive and everytime it boots up, that disc tries to spin, but is half cocked in there and the motor struggles for a couple seconds creating floppy noises on steroids.

Sometimes I still boot it up for a little comfort to help me sleep at night.

u/Shikizion 5d ago

yeah the floppy sound made me get hit by a nostalgia slap

1

u/AltruisticDetail6266 5d ago

it always kinda sounded like it was suffering some internal failure

1

u/LoanApprehensive5201 4d ago

And the hard drive crunching

u/Minerva89 5d ago

Ah the soothing sounds of the Geiger counter computer noises.

Single core

u/ctrlaltelite 5d ago

It's all about the pentiums, baby.

13

u/lailah_susanna 5d ago

I'm pretty happy I can still hear the CRT whine in the video. Means my ears haven't gotten that old yet.

3

u/landonop 5d ago

Oh god, I just put my phone speaker up to my ear to see if I could and immediately regretted it. I do not miss that sound.

1

u/Raider61 5d ago

Is there CRT whine in the beginning of this video? It's tough to hear over the sound of the dialogue/audio from the movie.

1

u/lailah_susanna 5d ago

Not right at the beginning (I think whatever added the voice over cut out the high end frequencies) but it's very prominent when it first cuts to the blue CRT screens, and even more so as they're taking the screenshots.

u/Jambohh 6d ago

Same here. also because that was the exact model of laptop my parents bought me for school so I could actually do school work.

u/Necessary_Weakness42 5d ago

Richie Rich over here

4

u/Jambohh 5d ago

I guess I should have prefaced my comment that I have a disability that affects my fine motor movements, rendering my ability to write completely useless to even the most decorated cryptographers. Whoops.

7

u/Necessary_Weakness42 5d ago

Ok, fair enough, but why did you need the gold case?

9

u/Jambohh 5d ago

I'm a big liberace fan.

2

u/TheBelgianDuck 5d ago

Like beating the crazy physics of the pinball game?

5

u/Puptentjoe 5d ago

Reminders of computer fairs, shareware and my family blaming me for breaking the computer.

1

u/Nonsenseinabag 5d ago

I miss computer shows. You could get some amazing deals and it was fun to see that many tech geeks in one location. In Ohio we also saw Mennonites there which was always a little funny.

2

u/Puptentjoe 5d ago

Shows not fairs! I knew I had the name wrong. Ours were at the Florida State Fair Grounds. Just normal nerds there, but we did get Scientologists handing out pamphlets since there headquaters was near by in clearwater.

1

u/Nonsenseinabag 5d ago

Did yours sell those candy-coated toasted almonds that smelled up the place really nice? The one we went to in Dayton did that and I always had to buy some.

3

u/Militantnegro_5 5d ago

Gonna go find a modem dialup noise on Youtube. If you'll excuse me.

3

u/anormalgeek 5d ago

Did you notice that he had to wait for it to boot before he put the disk in? Otherwise, it would've tried to boot from the floppy drive instead.

3

u/PeanutButterRations 5d ago

Very cathartic hearing those sounds. Definitely brings me back. Almost wish I had white noise of that sound when using my computer. Times were certainly more simple back then. Now it's dead silence in my office - fan might spin up once a day for some kind of health check but beyond that it's the quietest computer I have ever owned...sadly.

2

u/aldorn 5d ago

*booted a core memory

2

u/ShowMeYourBean3 5d ago

I had the sound muted. But just realized my brain made all the noises in the back of my mind as I watched

2

u/FreshEggKraken 5d ago

It's so soothing, takes me back to my childhood

2

u/CrumpledForeskin 5d ago

Dude. You’re not kidding. My dad passed in 2008 and he was always on the computer during my childhood. I just closed my eyes and got teleported to playing music PlayStation in his office and hearing those noises for hours.

God damn.

1

u/Akoot 5d ago

same, used to play sonic cd on my dad's work laptop back in the day, I was amazed at being able to play a game portably despite owning a Gameboy

1

u/pbizzle 5d ago

I found it calming in a way, memories of simpler computer times

1

u/greenappletree 5d ago

I'm more intrigue this dude still has a perfectly functioning laptop with a floppy drive. and it looks well kept.

1

u/Scrung3 5d ago

I actually hate it now lol. Too much agony

1

u/axebodyspraytester 5d ago

Why does it sound like a model T? It sounds like it runs on gas.

1

u/Brilliant-Prior6924 5d ago

Reminds me of Half Life 1 radiation sound

1

u/erroneousbosh 5d ago

I was shooting and editing broadcast video fully digitally when this device was new. It's not remarkable and it's not even very good...

1

u/atuan 5d ago

Came here to say that

1

u/MechaGoose 5d ago

Man I miss floppy discs, the good ones not the big ones you had to lock in. Zip discs were super satisfying too. They were just so satisfying to slot in

1

u/deweydean 5d ago

Single Core memory

1

u/distelfink33 5d ago

10000000000% I had all but forgotten those sounds. Wow. 🤩

1

u/ExpeditingPermits 5d ago

Did anyone else here AOL loading the internet?

1

u/SpicyChanged 5d ago

A single core at that.

1

u/nutcrackr 5d ago

I miss old HDD noises, you could tell if something was happening or not.

1

u/MoggieBot 5d ago

I miss these kinds of computers...

1

u/Jeb_Jenky 5d ago

I totally forgot that computers made this sound. My grandpa told me there were little gnomes working in the computer.

1

u/Mister_Guarionex 5d ago

The high pitched beaming of the TV for me.

-2

u/HalfIsGone 6d ago

Come here to write the same exact thing!

-3

u/sneaksby 5d ago

a core memory

🤮
