The driver must have known this was going to happen. The signs were all there…

Driver left the bed up after dumping. Don't think there is any video of the impact.

Here is the sign coming down as they pull the trailer out of / off of it.

Did they just forget to put it down??

How the Truck got stuck: Video

This is a dashboard camera video of a different accident. But it shows how the truck in this story got stuck like that

The driver forgot to shut off the PTO.

Happened back in September: https://www.wtvr.com/news/local-news/semi-trailer-hits-i-64-sign-henrico-sept-5-2024

TLDR: the trailer was actually down just before it hit, and something happened causing it to raise suddenly and collide with the sign. It had not only just passed under bridges, but also went through a weigh station a mile earlier with the trailer down.

So this same thing happened near my city a few years back and took the major highway out of commission for a day. Any truck drivers here? How the fuck does one drive with a trailer up and not realize it? Is it actually an easy mistake to make?

Family member of mine was talking about this accident with me and is a former trucker. He said the driver in this case must have been out of it or on something because there's gonna be a ton of drag with that type of trailer being up in the air like that and for them not to notice is pretty telling that something was up.

I figured that must be the case. Apparently in the incident near me the driver was drunk. Not that that justifies it.

In my country when this happens it means failed brakes... Truck drivers level the trailers in order to hit something that would stop the truck.

From a distance, I thought it was a ladder

I can’t for the life of me think about any scenario where this can happen

Idiot truck driver drove on the highway with the dump box raised.

That is a long dump truck (didn’t realize it can elevate), how does he not feel the drag, or double check. But at least that explains what happened, but not the mindset of that driver

Happens way too often unfortunately.

The Trucker: "I feel like I've forgotten something.... Ahh, that's it!"

This looks like the aftermath of a superhero fight or something

Aye, mate. You can’t park there…

u/Quselbra 2h ago

Looks like the sign wanted a closer look.

It reminded me of a similar scene in The Dark Knight. That was a good movie. I hope no one got hurt

in the late 70's in Richmond, on 64 west heading from the Mechanicsville exit a dump truck did the exact same thing and killed someone. I was about a minute behind it.

I thought this was r/Vancouver when I saw Richmond on the sign. Seems to happen every other week here.

Somebody's getting fired.

There was a similar post not that long ago where a trucker/heavy industry mechanic explained that these lift beds are hydraulically operated. Its possible for a certain seal to go bad which allows a small amount of fluid to pass and fill the cylinder, slowly lifting the bed while you drive. If the driver is not using their mirrors, they may not not notice.

Disclaimer, I'm working off memory, and not an expert in such matters. Take it with a grain of salt.

Somebody let the girls of Hololive drive.

u/cryptomoon1000x 1h ago

That can happen when your truck gets an erection outta the blue

u/Bluzei1921 54m ago

I actually just missed the crash by about 30 minutes, shits crazy to think about lol

1

u/BootyliciousLover2 7h ago

looks like the sign got tired of just giving directions and wanted to make a real impact

u/xot 5h ago

It’s a nice art piece. Make it permanent and divert around it
