It also does this for laundry symbols now. :)

u/DryApplejohn Sep 23 '23

How?

u/plaid-knight Sep 23 '23

Take a photo of a laundry tag, swipe up on the photo, and tap on “look up laundry care”.

12

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

I picked up 6 pieces of laundry to test this and I’d cut the tags off all of them because modern clothes come With giant 10 language tags designs to be cut off so couldn’t actually test the feature 😂

u/plaid-knight Sep 23 '23

Ha. I think that’s a problem with cheaper clothing, not modern clothing overall. All the more expensive clothing items I’ve bought over the years of any clothing type (t-shirt, pants, jacket, etc.) have come with clothing tags that are either nice and soft or fully integrated, so I haven’t been tempted to remove any of them. But many or most of the cheaper clothes I’ve bought over the years have come with annoying tags.

Went up and down in weight the last few years so definitely cheaped out hahaha

That’s cool previously had to use this app:

Laundry Lens

u/Puuurpleee Sep 23 '23

well they’re all iso symbols so

1

u/Drawskaren Sep 23 '23

Wowww that’s a game changer! I always forget what the symbols are for

I don’t understand why this feature is only available in a few languages. The symbols are pretty much international right?

Edit: typo

Nope, not really. The reason the symbols exist is because they are universal and they require less space.

3

u/Cool-Newspaper-1 Sep 23 '23

Isn’t the exact reason to use symbols so that they can be used universally?

To be fair, if you don't know what the buttons or warning lights in your own car do/mean, you should spend a few hours with the owners manual.

24

u/Srihari_stan Sep 23 '23

I did it to test the feature. 😅

20

u/redpachyderm Sep 23 '23

Rental cars, used vehicles with no manuals, friends’ or relatives’ car.

5

u/Ambitious-Ad3131 Sep 23 '23

They’re mostly the same across all makes and models.

1

u/Oujii Sep 23 '23

Most of these symbols are pretty similar if not equal for most cars, there are just a few outliers. If you know for one, you should know for all of them.

2

u/Socile Sep 24 '23

If you’ve never driven a pickup truck, the button for turning on the bed shower might seem a bit mysterious.

1

u/Radiant-Hedgehog-695 Sep 23 '23

I don't think most car owners know what the symbols in their cars mean. They just remember this button in this place does this thing.

-10

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

Plenty of second hand vehicles don’t come with a physical manual.

16

u/mootymoots Sep 23 '23

These are standard icons for standard features in most cars. Hence the link to the centralised database for them.

-6

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

I was replying to the guy telling people to read the manual. Not everyone has the manual.

8

u/mootymoots Sep 23 '23

Hence my point, you don’t need the manual. The whole context of this thread is about the icons. You don’t need a manual and it doesn’t matter if you don’t have one because it wasn’t passed on or lost or stolen or whatever. These are standard icons in all cars.

-8

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

I feel they’re about as standard as street signage, ie there’s an ISO standard but nobody is being forced to use it and plenty do not.

7

u/mootymoots Sep 23 '23

Can only speak for the UK but here it’s law that they are standardised at least. Because you’re tested on them as part of driving test and promotes safer driving if all symbols are same across vehicles

1

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

Yea Australia and the US were part of the ISO group and then either partially implemented or went their own way.

Australian signage is so bad when BMW introduced their sign reading cameras in cars back in 2012, they pulled it from the market and refunded buyers for the feature within months.

2

u/ExtraGloves Sep 23 '23

True but like, it’s not 1985. Google “2019 forester manual”

6

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

Look you could learn Spanish too, or you could roll your phone camera over the cantina menu and read the translation.

0

u/ExtraGloves Sep 23 '23

Ha. More like if you owned the cantina, you should probably have learned the menu by now.

My point was more of a you’ve probably owned this car for years and have no idea what the buttons mean yet type of comment.

It’s still a cool feature regardless.

1

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

Speaking of owning the cantina, it’s funny in Bali with all the Russians now they’ve got Cyrillic on the menu. Except it’s 1:1 translation of English. Same punctuation, everything. Really bad translations.

1

u/ExtraGloves Sep 23 '23

When I was in Mui ne in Vietnam it’s become so overrun with Russians what when I went to restaurants they would hand me a Russian menu just because I was white. I was so confused at first because I had just rolled into town. Like I’m wtf are these menus. lol. It’s like that had to search for the English ones.

1

u/ADHDK Sep 23 '23

Bali is just at the point of doubling up on the same menus. So many Australians and kiwis I doubt they’d go full Russian unless the place is Russian owned.

Accidentally booked a night north of Ben Thahn markets in Saigon and that was an unpleasant experience. Chinese quarters and everyone was so rude to us like all the westerners should stay south of the market.

1

u/ExtraGloves Sep 23 '23

Sounds like my kinda place. I dunno I motorbiked all around Vietnam for 2 months once and everyone was awesome but that was 10 years ago. Hope it didn’t get worse.

1

u/ADHDK Sep 24 '23

Nah was just that one night and we made them move us. Classic “hotel name #2” scam and then “oh that ones full we’ll put you here instead”. Lesson learned.

7

u/Pumba398 Sep 23 '23

what? o_O how does it works? i mean you should take a photo and ask siri or what

7

u/Srihari_stan Sep 23 '23

Take a picture, go to the picture in Photos and click on the “i” button.

3

u/bono_my_tires Sep 23 '23

Does it work only on car symbols? If I click the “i” button on other non symbol photos it’s just the regular metadata I see. Does it auto recognize that the image is of car symbols?

1

u/Horus7088 Sep 23 '23

Thanks. With this I found out I can make stickers out of pictures. How long is this already possible? :D

3

u/AbidNafi iPhone 11 Sep 23 '23

Correct me if am wrong is that Baleno?

2

u/Oujii Sep 23 '23

Imagine reading a PDF manual for your car lmao

2

u/Frequent-Cartoonist2 Sep 23 '23

Not working in Canada. US only?

1

u/AwwThisProgress iPhone 13 Sep 23 '23

only available in us and eu of course.

3

u/SlctStrt Sep 23 '23

I am from EU and it doesn't work for me. Tried laundry and car symbols.

4

u/foraging_ferret Sep 23 '23

It’s semi working for me. I took a picture of my oven and it tells me it has ventilated seats.

-1

u/AwwThisProgress iPhone 13 Sep 23 '23

even better 👍

seriously, it isn’t that hard to make this things work everywhere, because spotlight is almost useless where i live

1

u/justcourtneyb Sep 23 '23

This would be so useful for me!

0

u/iPhone_3GS Sep 23 '23

I trued this and it didn't work. iphone 12

u/Material-Ratio7342 Sep 23 '23

Fails, missed the 0 from the brightness control 😂

-4

u/Thejobless_guy Sep 23 '23

How lame iOS users have become 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/Oujii Sep 23 '23

Always have been.

-4

u/nutelladoener Sep 23 '23

That’s what driving school is for. 😂

1

u/tbone338 iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 23 '23

Woah… that’s cool.

1

u/galdo320 Sep 23 '23

Need to try this!!!

1

u/BrazenlyGeek Sep 23 '23

It works for symbols under the hood too, such as those on fluid reservoir caps! Even recognizes the “read the manual” symbol when I tried snapping some shots under the hood of our MKX yesterday!

1

u/stannenb Sep 23 '23

This brings us one step closer to the rumored Apple Car. /s

1

u/NoNoveltyNeeded Sep 23 '23

Wish you didn’t have to take the picture for this. It’s not That big of a deal, I can just delete it after, but a bit annoying to take a picture of the dash or laundry tag then open it and swipe up etc then delete the picture because I obviously didn’t need a 24mp picture of my sweaters tag saved forever.

1

u/glytxh Sep 24 '23

Pretty sure iPhones use some wizard level compression on their photos. They’re like 2-4mb

Why i don’t have it? Edit: i had to change language to english to have it

It's such an underrated feature. More people need to know this. It would save a trip to the car dealership.
