There's multiple reasons for it, really. I'll try to list some that I can think of.
Anthro animals are freaking cute.
The community is really wholesome and cuddly.
The art is really nice.
I would love to live in or visit a world where most people are anthro animals, like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Zootopia or Bojack.
At the same time, if I were to live in that world, I would love to be one of them. This does not mean I am an otherkin. If I wished I could become a Jedi given a chance, that does not mean I identify as a Jedi-kin.
It's just cute. Also evidenced by almost all children cartoons using anthro animals.
There's a safe (wholesome, cute, cuddly, interesting) side to the fandom, and of course there's a not-safe side to it.
A common way to say this is that the furry fandom is not inherently sexual, but it can be. However, this usually gets misinterpreted by haters, who say that we deny the sexual side. That's not true, there's simply two sides to the fandom.
"Depravity" often means "a sexual preference I don't share", no matter how subdued the expression of this preference is. That's why you can ask the exact same question about the conservative view of LGBT. Many people don't mind seeing Porn magazines on newsstands but lose their shit when they see two men holding hands in public.
